Back In '82....

I can't play new video games. I want old Nintendo so I can play the Mario games. I like your basic left-right-up down and screw the rest of it. I remember this one time a guy took me to some special arcade to play a virtual reality game and I literally had a panic attack. The control panel looked like something from NASA.

Kraftwerk Member Suffers Heart Attack and Court Win Overturned

According to CMJ a source at EMI stated that recent Australian show was canceled because member Fritz Hilpert suffered a minor heart attack. He was reportedly seen on site and advised to check into a hospital - which he did, for one night. Hilpert and band mates played the following date and have not canceled any further shows. Kraftwerk has released no official statement and there is no mention of this incident on their official website.

Additionally the band's copyright case verdict has been overturned in favor of the defendant Moses Pelham (producer). The band sued Pelham over a 1997 use of a two second sample which was not cleared. The sample was used in the song "Nur Mir" by Sabrina Setlur.

Fuck Your Corporate Fascist Beauty Standards / Amanda Palmer

Here is the latest video by Amanda Palmer for "Leeds United." She reports that Roadrunner Records asked her to re-edit the video to cut out shots of her belly , because she looks "too fat." She reportedly told them to "fuck off." When even the little guy labels are asking for this it's shameful. Good for her for calling them out and not giving in - here it is unedited:

NEWS: Ben Nichols Title Track "The Last Pale Light In The West"

Just Bringing You News:

(Quoted from band materials) Lucero frontman Ben Nichols is releasing his highly anticipated solo debut album, a “mini-LP” titled The Last Pale Light in the West, this January 2009 via Liberty & Lament / The Rebel Group. Nichols entered the studio this past August with Rick Steff (Cat Power, Lucero) and Todd Beene (Glossary) to record this seven track mini-LP which features songs inspired from the Cormac McCarthy book Blood Meridian. The mini-LP displays Nichols signature gravelly voice accompanied by his acoustic guitar and complimented by Steff’s perfectly placed piano and accordion parts, as well as Beene’s subtle pedal steel guitar.

The Fader Offer Free Download of 7"

I am not acquainted with this music, so "just the facts":

The FADER and SoCo's latest free limited edition 7" featuring exclusive tracks by Brooklyn drone-rockers, Telepathe, as well as Brooklyn's dance-reggae-ist 77Klash. The record is the 8th in the series and for the first time is available for free download via the link below.

THE FADER AND SOUTHERN COMFORT LOOK TO BROOKLYN FOR THEIR NEXT LIMITED EDITION 7-INCH FEATURING TELEPATHE & 77KLASH
The FADER And Southern Comfort Announce The Eighth Seven-Inch Vinyl In Series Featuring More Exclusive Unreleased Tracks; Available For Free MP3 Download For The First Time Ever

New York, NY: The FADER, the definitive voice of emerging music, and Southern Comfort announce the eighth installment in their series of limited-edition 7-inch vinyl releases curated by the editors of The FADER. This rare pressing of only five hundred copies will also be accessible to readers of The FADER, who will have the chance to win the limited record online at TheFADER.com. Beginning with this record, the tracks from all of the FADER/Southern Comfort series singles will also be available for free download at TheFADER.com.

To kick off the a-side, Southern Comfort and The FADER enlisted recent I Am Sound signees, Telepathe, to cut "Heat," an exclusive track that will not be available on their January debut album. The song stays true to their dance style while still exploring their signature droned out synth sounds. Flip the wax to 77Klash's "Caroline," where he keeps the dance vibe of the 7-inch alive with some aggressive reggae masquerading as funky house music with slick vocals. Slicking the cover is the exclusive artwork of acclaimed graphic novelist, Dash Shaw.

Previous releases in the series have included match-ups with the likes of indie groups M Ward and Ladyhawk, dancehall vocalists Busy Signal and Mavado as well as boundary destroying rockers Black Lips and YACHT. The final 7-inch of the 2007 series featured Ed Banger DJ, Busy P, as well as fellow Baltimore citizen DJ Blaqstarr. Continuing their tradition of showcasing emerging artists, The FADER and Southern Comfort kicked off the 2008 series with White Williams and Dirty Projectors and followed up with Africa issue cover stars BLK JKS, of South Africa, and Esau Mwamwaya, of London, paired up with the production duo Radioclit. This newest release comes off of the heels of the previous meeting of Alabama's Hood Headlinaz and Baltimore rappers Get 'Em Mamis.

About The FADER
Founded by Rob Stone and Jon Cohen, The FADER is the definitive voice of emerging music and the lifestyle that surrounds it. Through in-depth reporting and a distinct street sensibility, The FADER aggressively covers the most dynamic breadth of music and style emanating from the fringes of the mainstream to the heart of the underground. All I Do Now Is Dick Around

True enough, but it's by Sparks with Steve McDonald (Redd Kross)

KRISTEENYOUNG and Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump Collaborate

I'm not a fan of either, but they are popular so I thought perhaps someone was interested. I'll add that Patrick's last name is actually Stumph and he used to work at a Borders cafe and his sister is or was a BMG employee.

https://rcpt.yousendit.com/623731637/4f1b2cb714d7db06ed599bedbebd6abf

KRISTEENYOUNG have just finished work on their forthcoming album “Music for Strippers, Hookers, and the Odd On-looker” which features a duet with Fall Out Boy front man Patrick Vaughn Stump on the song “That’s What It Takes, Dear”. The legendary Tony Visconti (Bowie, T. Rex) produced the album. The group will also embark on their first full US tour since touring with Morrissey and Ted Leo and the Pharmacists (dates below).

Front-woman Kristeen Young says of working with Patrick, “From the moment I first heard ‘Sugar, We’re Going Down’ I was a goner. Like all heart-stopping moments, I remember my surroundings clearly…Home Depot parking lot, in the band van, and I couldn’t wait to hear the song again and again. The voice (that leapt out of the speakers and wrapped itself around my entire circulatory system) not only possessed the obligatory radio-ring, but had depth, flexibility, and made all the melody choices that break your heart while simultaneously making you feel like you can conquer all. When I wrote the duet, I knew that Patrick Stump was the very capable man for the job at hand. The song is about the duality of the human spirit. It’s about a battle that a person has with one’s self when at the lowest of low times. Lucky me, not only did Patrick’s voice caress these oddly rhythmed melody lines better than how I imagined, Patrick, personally, seemed to embody the role. He embraced the song with focus and optimism, and was an actual lift of light to my often heavy (and…YES) depressed soul. I am so fortunate that Patrick loved my song so, and that he had no reservations about expressing it.”

Indie Band Brass Bed Releases Midnight Matinee

I'm having a listen right now. I read that someone described them as "something akin to “The Beach Boys crossing paths with The Flaming Lips” and thought I would give it a try. Maybe you're interested as well? You can find out more via myspace.

“Midnight Matinee is a breath of fresh air—a rock album that is intriguing from beginning to end.” – Anti-Gravity

“...a compellingly distinctive assembly of instrumentation that dutifully serves each song.” – Creative Loafing

“A winning confluence of effervescent indie rock, quirky psych-pop, country and even a couple of moments of noise...” – Orlando Weekly

“...Midnight Matinee is a kaleidoscope of orchestral flourishes, psych-pop contagiousness, fuzzed-out rock, wilting country winks, and even the occasional detour into noise. It’s an ADHD modus operandi that probably shouldn’t work, but thanks to watertight songwriting, is miraculously cohesive.” – Flagpole

“New Wave Lover” The Pinups / Judy In Disguise With Nazis

My gut instinct is to post things like this without explanation and just allow you to enjoy, but this one left me pondering... Does this even qualify as a song? The random cigarette smoking guy in the leather jacket is the best the show could do for a new wave lover? (I mean, it hardly seems worth the effort.) When did leotards become acceptable stage attire? (And when did they stop?) Why didn't the awkward “shoulder shimmy spin” catch on as a dance? Doesn’t this look like a window in Amsterdam? Was the entire show’s budget spent on the neon Pinups sign?

and what is going on here?

Ein Sommer nur für mich - Ärzte
Sunshine + bellies + nazis. Hmm.

Does anyone have an mp3 of the german version of Judy In Disguise? The one where it sounds like they sing "Judy inscar with nazis"? It isn't a matter of me wanting it - it's surpassed that stage and gone on to need.

Negativeland Archives Online / Mark Hosler Letter To Congress

Hundreds of hours of archived Negativland radio broadcasts (and more to come) are now online at negativland.com/ote (Over The Edge)
www.negativland.com
www.myspace.com/officialnegativland

Below unedited is the letter that Negativland will use while in Washington, DC.
“Some Thoughts For Congress About Creativity and Copyright”

Hello Congressman _________, and thanks for letting me visit your offices here in Washington DC. As a founding member of the group Negativland, I am here to offer some perspectives on the surprising and exciting directions that art (music, video, web sites, etc.) and technology are taking in the world today, and how this new explosion of creativity is colliding with our sometimes outdated copyright laws. It’s rare that artists get to speak to you on behalf of art, and so I want to thank you and the folks at DigitalFreedom.org for letting me visit you.

From our 28 years of being creators, observers, and consumers of music, art, and video, our group, Negativland, has witnessed incredible and wonderful shifts in the ways that the public is now able to create and distribute new work via digital technologies. We’ve also witnessed amazing changes in the way that money and corporate power has increasingly influenced policy, Congress, and the laws of our nation. At times, these changes are good. At other times, as I am sure you know, they benefit no one except the businesses lobbying you. We are concerned when this does not serve the public interest.

We believe that the healthy evolution of art and creativity has more value than simply counting how much money is lost or made. Art, science and technology have evolved because of how we all build upon the ideas and works of those who came before us. Copyright was always intended as a balancing act between giving ownership to creators so as to provide incentive to create new works, and allowing works to lapse into the public domain so that new ideas could develop. But our founding fathers could never have imagined the kind of world we live in today and the amazing new technologies that we are surrounded with - technologies that encourage and inspire us to interact with the world and create in unprecedented new ways. Protecting the author of a creative work is a good thing, but the benefits of copyright have been thrown off balance by the disproportionate influence of those with the most money. In fact, the more recent expansions of our nation’s copyright laws represent a break from our nations past and from the intentions of our own Constitution.

Did you know that copyright originally lasted only 14 years, and then all work fell into the public domain? The limit now is 70 years plus the life of the creator, meaning that nothing made in our lifetimes will fall into the public domain. This does not strike us as a very good public good. Even patents, which govern everything from industrial processes to pharmaceuticals, are given only a 20 year period before other manufacturers have access to them and this system seems to have done nothing to discourage innovation, creation, and especially remuneration in the fields of science and technology with this relatively short time span.

But art is neither science nor technology. Why make art out of things originated by others? We think that unless one is lucky enough to live on a remote island somewhere, we all live in a world surrounded by news, music, movies, ads, logos and messages. We are, quite literally, bombarded with media. It has always been a part of human nature to make art in response to and using material from the world around us. Nowadays, anyone with a small computer can easily make, remake, slice, dice, mix, and remix from any electronic media they can get their hands on. And because we can, we often do. Besides being fun, this kind of work creates a new type of cultural “conversation” that we can all have with the media around us, a conversation that we believe is healthy for a vibrant democracy that aspires to true freedom of speech.

Copying has gone on in art and music throughout the ages, from “quoting” in classical music compositions, to homage and parody. In much of the last century, these “appropriation” practices were the province of the avant-garde and the fine art world. But with the Internet, the ever-growing speed of computing, YouTube, MySpace, file-sharing, and other recent developments, they have now moved wholly and firmly into the mainstream. And yet our laws strive to criminalize all of this behavior. Ours is a world in which copyright has fallen woefully behind the curve of what the public actually wants to do with all that digital “stuff” out there. Millions world wide are creating art, music and video that incorporate elements of existing work - cutting and pasting bits and pieces of music, video, text, and pictures made by others to create new works. Millions of web pages now use various Creative Commons licenses to provide a nuanced alternative to traditionally black and white interpretations of copyright laws (one such license Negativland helped to write). The prevalence of these alternative copyright strategies is a testament to how many of your constituents are not at all happy with copyright as it stands now.

At this juncture, we feel it’s necessary to point out that we support artists and creators being paid for the work they produce. We believe copyright was correctly intended as a judicious balance between providing for the creator as well as providing for the public commons, a balance which Negativland believes has been largely forgotten by the big businesses who produce and sell most media and entertainment. And we should also mention that all this creative re-use of material rarely if ever puts new work in economic competition with its sources. It does not pose any reasonable economic threat to the original source in any marketplace that they share. In an ideal world, Negativland would like to see the notion of Fair Use expanded to accommodate, accept, and protect these new practices.

I hope that my brief presentation today can give you some new perspective on this type of art and creativity, and that the next time some restrictive intellectual property bill crosses your desk or a lobbyist from the music or movie industry comes into your office to push for even stricter copy protection and more extreme legal punishment for those who break copyright laws, you’ll keep in the mind the millions of folks out here whose creative efforts are criminalized by what has become, intentionally or not, a thoughtless and short sighted application of what were once some very well-intended laws protecting owners as well as the public commons.

Sincerely, Mark Hosler on behalf of Negativland, 10/28/08 mark@negativland.com

An Asobi Seksu Repost and Update

Asobi Seksu = colloquial Japanese for Playful sex.

I deleted the older post and added some new info - including the album's title (Hush)which may now be announced.

Asobi Seksu's fantastic second album (2004) Citrus is being issued on 180 gram + Gatefold vinyl by Friendly Fire Recordings on November 25th. It's the first time this album has been available on vinyl and this version includes a download code for a digital version as well as bonus digital remixes.

The new Asobi Seksu release Hush), is to be released February 17th on Polyvinyl. It was produced by Chris Zane who did an amazing job on Citrus. I'll post a song as soon as I'm told they're available.

The musical womb created by the guitar and effects pedals of James Hanna are some of the most exciting sounds to happen this decade. Fans of "Shoegaze" or "Dream Pop" will definitely love Asobi Seksu as much as I do. They are an amalgamation of My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Slowdive, Ride, and Cocteau Twins with a bit of sugar thrown in for good measure via vocalist Yuki.

Here is the Citrus track "Red Sea" (no video)

Raconteurs News

The Raconteurs worked with Ashley Monroe and Ricky Skaggs on a bluegrass version of "Old Enough". Autumn de Wilde (Salute Your Salution) took video footage for use in the upcoming video, and you can see some lovely black and white photos (including an impressive leaping photo of Brendan Benson) on The Raconteurs website.

November 14th, tune in to hear The Raconteurs perform live on National Public Radio's World Cafe with host David Dye.

Modern Soul

Now usually I'm finicky and I mainly like my soul music from the sixties, thank you very much, but these modern British artists......

Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings "100 Days, 100 Nights"

Adele "Chasing Pavements" on Letterman

Duffy "Mercy"

Amy Winehouse "You Know I'm NO Good"

And POSSIBLY Estelle, but I haven't digested the album. Pros - good voice. Cons - worked with Kanye who irritates me and also this song sounds a bit like "Fath" by George Michael - is it some new sample w/out a sample thing?:

Raconteurs Video News

Tomorrow, November 11th, go to music.myspace.com at 12 pm PST to see the world premiere of the new video for "Old Enough", directed by Autumn de Wilde.

Brazilian Girls / I'm Stuck In A Rut And I Like It

These past few days I can't stop listening to this New York City "Electronica" (but don't let that put you off) band. I meant to post about them when I first started this lil’ blog, but I forgot. They are signed to the famous Jazz label Verve. Does that have you curious? I hope you will check them out in all of their quirky wonderful moosicks. Their experimental spirit brings the band Butter to mind (members of Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Cibo Matto, Skeleton Key.) Here are some songs from their new album New York City and a smattering of older tracks to give you a sense of their - admittedly eclectic sound. Try it - you'll like it. (Maybe?) Check them out on myspace for more information and support them if you like what you hear. www.myspace.com/braziliangirls

Joss Whedon: Dollhouse Premiers Feb 13

Joss Whedon projects always have strong female characters. I thought that he was done with FOX after Firefly flopped, but he's back with this new series. As a huge fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I have been looking forward to this. It also features Eliza Dushku who played the very hot slayer babe Faith. The hour long drama will air on Friday nights on Fox beginning in February.

Locksley Backs Ray Davies

I blogged a while back about surprisingly liking this new band Locksley. I saw a video (yeah, it happens) and thought "I dig this." Anyway they are not only opening up for Ray Davies on his latest tour but according to a press release:

"Brooklyn-Based Garage Pop Outfit Selected To Back Ray Davies On Stage 12-City US Tour

Without the support of a major label system the band was able to accomplish unprecedented success based on the merit of their songwriting, landing highly coveted spots on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Kimmel Live as well as placement of their hit single My Kind Of Lover in J.J. Abrams' much anticipated Cloverfield. They were also awarded the honor of composing Why Can't I Be You for the MTV show of the same name and the track's music video won mtvU's The Freshman and in an unprecedented move, the band was featured by MTV as Artist of The Week for two consecutive weeks in the month of September 2008."

Nov-29 Miami FL - The Fillmore Miami Beach at Jackie Gleason Theater
Nov-30 Orlando, FL - Hard Rock Live

Roger Joseph Manning (Jellyfish, Air, Beck) News

Roger Joseph Manning's latest release Catnip Dynamite will see a U.S. release in February via Oglio Records. It's a pop classic with some dark twists and turns to which fans of Jellyfish will no doubt be accustomed.

And I should mention that I recently ordered his (out of print) Logan's Sanctuary cd from his website and he was kind enough to include an autograph and a silly drawing. I don't collect signatures, but it made me smile. For fans who do collect that sort of thing - order something from his website's shop and you just might get some hand drawn or signed packaging yourself. You can also get a dvd of his newly released Fuji Rock Fest performance or some Imperial Drag or T.V. Eyes stuff. Visit:www.rogerjosephmanningjr.com for fun and frolicking.

I never saw this video from his last album Solid State Warrior (Japan)/ Land of Pure Imagination (America) "Too LAte For US Now"

World Music Reissue News From Crammed Label

"CRAMMED DISCS! RE-ISSUING TWO CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE GEMS FROM THEIR CATALOGUE ON NOVEMBER 18th, 2008:

Bebel Gilberto : "Tanto Tempo"
Suba : "São Paulo Confessions"

The daughter of João Gilberto (who co-invented bossa nova 50 years ago with his friend Tom Jobim), Bebel Gilberto was living in New York and couldn't get a suitable record label in the US or Brazil when Brussels-based independent label Crammed signed her worldwide back in '99. Released in early 2000 via Crammed's sub-label Ziriguiboom (and entrusted to the able hands of Six Degrees Records for US distribution), Bebel's debut album "Tanto Tempo" captivated audiences around the globe with its delicate mix of classic bossa nova and cool electronica. It became one of the greatest international successes in the history of Brazilian music, totalling over one million sales worldwide. "Tanto Tempo" was nominated for a Grammy (as were Bebel's successful second and third albums, also produced and released by Crammed).

"Tanto Tempo" was produced by Suba, a Serbian composer/producer who moved to Brazil in the early 90s, and also got signed to Ziriguiboom. Crammed then introduced him to Bebel Gilberto. Entitled "São Paulo Confessions", Suba's own debut album became an emblematic, cult record, and was the key inspiration for many artists who subsequently blended Brazilian, lounge & electronic music. The album also introduced a very young & talented vocalist by the name of Cibelle, who has gone on to release two great albums on Crammed/Ziriguiboom, with more to come. Tragically, Suba died in a fire which erupted in his flat, a few days prior to the release of "São Paulo Confession".

Both of these albums are now being re-issued by Crammed, and will be made available through Crammed's distribution arrangement with Ryko.

"Chat" With Wayne Coyne

Not over tea or anything....

(from the lips camp)
This Monday the 10th, Wayne will be stepping in front of a computer and will be chatting with you guys for about 30 minutes starting at 6:00pm PST. He'll be answering questions, comments, rants, or whatever else you want to throw at him, and will of course talk about the mighty Christmas On Mars movie!

You can view the chat (and take part in it) right at the Lips' Myspace page - just look for the Ustream player!

And don't forget that the LA premiere of the movie is Monday night.

Andy Taylor (Ex Duran Duran) Spills His Guts / What am I reading?

What are you reading? (I ask - As if people leave comments.) I just finished reading Twilight which was a bit juvenille for my taste, but a quick little vampire read if you're into that type of thing. The film is being released at the end of the month and I'll likely see it.
Favorite Vampire Films:
Near Dark
The Lost Boys
The Hunger
Nosferatu (Original and Herzog)
Interview With the Vampire
Shadow of the Vampire
Martin
Dracula (Bela)

and Bram Stoker's Dracula gets a (dis)honerable mention for many laugh outloud moments that weren't meant to be funny. No - not just the ass wig. I love the costumes and cinematography, and Kilar's fantastic score, but Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder portrayals of Jonathan and and just terrible. (But didn't you love Tom Waits as Renfield?)

Now I am reading Absolute Beginners - which I have started and misplaced repeatedly since about '85. This time I refuse to mislay the book until I have completed it! There was a musical version - if you recall - in the eighties. I liked it - cheesy at it was. You have to appreciate David Bowie doing an American accent whilst dancing on a giant typewriter. Don't you? It's about London in the 60s and mods and the dawn of the teenager.

When I've completed that I promised my cousin I would read She's Come Undone, because she mailed it to me. Then my friend is supposed to lend me his copy of Wild Boy: My Life in Duran Duran by Andy Taylor(Grand Central Publishing). He allegedly dishes a bit and fesses up to the coke whore rumors, but mostly he keeps it civil. I wish someone would spill their dirty laundry. HE quit the band twice for chrissakes!
