Full Press Release:

“If we can’t change the world/ Let’s at least get the charts right!” Art Brut ‘Demons Out!’

Does British pop deserve Eddie Argos? A chart fixture in France, iconic in Germany (where his lyrics have been the subject of a lecture at Berlin University under the tile ‘The Depressive Dandy’), lionised by the cream of alt.America (Craig Finn and Jeffrey Lewis are fans) and a world class blogger to boot (check out :www.the-eddie-argos-resouce.blogspot.com) he is, as the NME pointed out in 2005, ’the new Jarvis’ and so much more.

“It’s strange” muses Eddie. “Outside the U.K people seem to find it easier to accept our songs on face value. We played in Brazil with Franz Ferdinand and all these school kids were singing ‘Emily Kane’ to me. It really freaked me out.”

Eddie may be an outsider worthy of Albert Camus, but his time is about to come.

Produced by Frank Black over twelve days last December, new album Art Brut vs. Satan is the record Brut-o-philes have been waiting for since debut single ‘Formed A Band’ illuminated the musical universe back in 2004.

Tuneful, truculent and more on the button than University Challenge’s Gail Trimble, it’s the sound of Art Brut at their most confident and confrontational.

Eddie: “In the past I’ve been worried about what people might think about our records, but this time I don’t care. I know it’s good.”

So how, as David Byrne might ask, did they get here? At the start of 2008, Art Brut found themselves on the other side of the world, touring Australia in support of second album ‘It’s a Bit Complicated’.

Eddie: “We were away on tour for two years. By the end it became a nightmare. Consequently, the second album was full of songs about relationships. I’d been engaged to someone, so every night I’d be singing miserable songs about breaking up with girls. We needed a break.”

When it arrived, it came from an unlikely source: in March, the band severed their relationship with EMI. Infuriated by the label’s decision to release ‘Pump Up The Volume’ without their permission, Eddie wrote the word ‘SLAVE’ on his face. Guitarist Jasper Future began posting anti-EMI blogs. In a stand-off of this magnitude, there would only be one winner.

“They said ‘we’ll let you go as long as you stop slagging us off’” laughs Eddie.

“It was us being a bit cocky and rude, but that works for us.”

Where others might have buckled, Art Brut found themselves gaining (super) power from the spat; a creative Kryptonite which fuels ‘Art Brut vs Satan’.

Eddie: “We’ve been lucky, we got signed to Rough Trade on our first demo, and then we signed to Fierce Panda, which is a great label. But having that bit of friction really helped us. This album is quite feisty and argumentative, and I really like that.”

Having endured a lengthy recording process for debut ‘Bang Bang Rock’n’Roll’ and ‘It’s a Bit Complicated’, the band resolved to record their next album as speedily as possible.

“I love the first Frank Black And The Catholics album” explains Eddie.

“He did that in one day. It made me think-that’s how I want to records to be made. So we came to the conclusion, let’s ask Frank Black to produce it, and do it like that”

To the band’s surprise, Black –a fervent fan- said yes.

Accordingly, the band found themselves packing their bags and heading for Wavelength Studios in Oregon last December.

Eddie: “The studio Frank uses is in Salem. It’s in the middle of nowhere. We were staying by the motorway, and he’d pick us up in his car every day. We’d do eight hour days then back to the hotel. We did the whole thing in twelve days. It was very simple.”

With the band set up in one big room, their amps in the kitchen and Eddie singing his vocals in a cupboard (“It was ok, I had drinks in there”) they set about exorcising the demons of the previous two years.

“I had an album’s worth of songs written, but once we got there we wrote four or five new ones. It all just flooded out.”

Opening with first single ‘Alcoholics Unanimous’-which finds Eddie bawling “There’s so many people I might have upset/ I apologised to them all with the same group text“, Satan spills over with wit, wisdom, and righteous fury. From ‘Passengers’ -a neat inversion of Iggy Pop’s ode to isolation- to the deeply personal ‘DC Comics And Chocolate Milk’ (“From delivering post to serving beer/I’ve never had much of a career”) it’s a rummage through the diaries of British pop’s sharpest observationist.

The pivotal ‘Demons Out!’, meanwhile, cast Argos as an indie Witchfinder General on the trail of those who would corrupt music to their own ends, complete with the lyric: “This is Art Brut versus Satan/The record buying public, we hate them!”
Eddie: “It was inspired by seeing Muse. My girlfriend is in The Blood Arm, who were supporting, and so I was compelled to see them. It was horrible-all these visuals of Tiananman Square and the Vietnam War. They’re from Devon- what have they got to do with that?”

‘Slap Dash for No Cash’ meanwhile, is an ode to immediacy which poses the question: “Why is everyone trying to sound like U2?/ Why would you want to?”.

Eddie: “I can’t stand the fact that every band seems to think it’s ok to use that epic sound. In the current climate people shouldn’t be sounding like that. They should be more austere-it’s just not cool.”

If ‘Summer Jobs’ –inspired by a stint working at Harry Ramsden’s in Bournemouth- and ‘Twist and Shout’ –about singing Jeffrey Lewis songs in the post office- touch on familiar Brut themes of alienation and social embarrassment, the surprise comes with a final ‘Mysterious Bruises’.

A seven minute excursion into the agit-funk of ’77 era Talking Heads (or, if you prefer, Julian Cope’s ‘Safe Surfer’) complete with the Pullitzer-prize worthy couplet: “I can’t remember anything I’ve done/I fought the floor and the floor won!” it’s a sobering account of the morning after the night before which seems destined to fill dancefloors from Paris to Pasadena.
Which is where we came in.

The sharpest, most articulate song-writer in rock is back on our doorstep, ringing on the doorbell. He’s here to make us laugh, cry, and remember why we got hooked on the stuff in the first place.

After all, they’re doing it for you, so you better be grateful. Time to decide whose side you’re on.

Gorillaz Go Bananas On New Documentary

Gorillaz have completed a documentary titled Banannaz. Jimmy Chamberlin Comments on Leaving The Smashing Pumpkins

Drummer can't "cash the check."

Ex Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has commented upon his departure from the band. A blog post reasds in part "I will say, without going into any unnecessary details that this represents a positive move forward for me. I can no longer commit all of my energy into something that I don’t fully possess. I won’t pretend I’m into something I’m not. I won’t do it to myself, you the fan, or my former partner. I can’t just, 'Cash the check' so to speak." Hey Corgan - I can!

Chamberlin squashed rumors of bad blood with his long time friend Billy Corgan, as well as drug rumors by adding "There is no drama, bad blood, or anything else."

Duran Duran Working With Mick Ronson and Kaiser Chiefs

As mentioned in a prior post, Duran Duran are, (what they term), "hard at work" on a new album with Mark Ronson. Ronson recently invited Kaiser Chiefs member Nick Hodgson to the band's London studio sessions. (Hey, if one trend doesn't work, try another). They recorded three songs together.

This is not the first Ronson / Duran collaboration. They worked with Ronson before and performed a live concert in Paris last year. Reflecting upon that experience, Duran Duran's bassist John Taylor had this to say, “Mark is one of the most exciting talents in music today. He’s a super-nice guy too, which makes it even better. He had a lot of crazy ideas which all seemed to work out. So many, in fact, that what was supposed to be a thirty-minute set turned out to be an hour and a half! And it’s great to have his big band wrap themselves around us too, horns, strings and percussion. It was really magical!”

John Taylor has recently participated in the Tap Water Project (via Unicef), which raises awareness of the world's water crisis. More information may be obtained at www.TapProjectRadio.org. The bamd are also a confirmed headliner for London's The Lovebox Weekender.

The Lava Children To Release Debut and It's All Very Myserious 'Innit?

The Lava Children recorded their upcoming self titled album "in a secluded mountain fortress" in Altadena, CA and will release it May 26 on Graveface. Related press materials receive an A+ for drama. Here is an excerpt "It may have been found stuck in an ice block in the far-flung pitch-black night of the frozen tundra or growing out of a patch of moss and fungus on the side of a mighty California redwood tree. Or it could have been found buried in an Egyptian desert wasteland, firmly clutched to the now-hollow chest of some bygone dusty old corpse. . . and it just might be cursed."

The Lava Children tracklisting:
1. I am a Pony
2. Particles
3. Firefly
4. Troll
5. The Green Word - Download/listen to this track here: http://www.graveface.com/the_green_word.mp3

Avant Garde Band Zs To Release Music of the Modern White

ZS, who the New York Times described as "One of the strongest avant-garde bands in New York,” will release Music of the Modern White on June 23 on The Social Registry.

Tracks:
1. MMW I (13.25)
2. MMW II (9.45)

Taken from press materials:
Zs were founded in 2000 and have existed as a trio, sextet, and quartet before solidifying in to their current three-piece line-up. While their music has been categorized as no wave, brutal-prog, and post-minimalist, they are primarily concerned with challenging the physical and mental limitations of both performer and listener. Manipulating extended technique, unique instrumental synthesis, and near telepathic communication, Zs aims to create works that envelop the listener and unfold sonically over time, evoking unspoken past, present, and future rites and ritual. The band have released records on a number of labels including Troubleman Unlimited, 31G and Planaria and have played shows with bands such as Animal Collective, Gang Gang Dance, Battles, Orthrelm, Dirty Projectors, Dan Deacon, Marnie Stern, Aa and Han Bennick.

Let's plunge in a little further in to Music Of The Modern White, shall we? The A Side (or MMW I) opens with a series of metallic drum pangs reminiscent of the creepy Chinese opening ceremony in last summer's Olympics. You can see from the get-go that there's more studio emphasis than usual on this piece. It's a true sonic experience. Tenor saxophone figures rapidly flutter, squeal and moan across the sonic field like a more abrasive version of The Lounge Lizards. Slowly, a guitar drifts in with a sharp, razorblade drone that sounds somewhere between a car motor and the sound of Detroit going bankrupt. The musical equivalent of a Robert Rauschenberg, this side continually erases itself, peeling away the sonic layers and replacing them with open atmospheric dissonance to the point of a fractured, physical bliss.

The B Side (or MMW II) changes trajectory by opening with sporadic polyrhythmic trills and drum figures. Greenberg's guitar throbs in the distance like a Theremin feeding back over an air-raid horn. Once again, deconstruction comes into the scene as the palette is wiped clean and replaced with a series of handclaps and harmonics in odd time. Finally, perhaps taking a cue from The Boredoms' playbook, the track is immediately compressed into a stew of fractal notes and manipulated in the studio from all directions. From this, all three members are completely free to communicate without expectation or precedent – a perfect, near-tranquil conclusion to our schizophrenic journey.

With art by John Dwyer and experimental intentions oozing out of its auditory pores, Music Of Modern White is something new and worthy of your attention. It refuses to play into the dead retro tropes that seem stuck on some sort of feedback loop throughout the music world. This is no Fleet Foxes. This is the sound spewing from the bullhorn before they blast the top off the mountain where the foxes live.

Bio:
Perfection in art is for subjective fools. The goal of any real artist is purity, and purity is a state of mind. Hamlet knew and told us. To thine own self, be true. In 2007, with the wayward absence of bassist Cris Kirkwood a hiccup since passed, the Meat Puppets simultaneously reformed and pledged a singular ferIn 2007, with the wayward absence of bassist Cris Kirkwood a hiccup since passed, the Meat Puppets simultaneously reformed and pledged a singular fervent purpose. Complete resurrection. That's no small order. This is, after all, a band that stands out as one of the most illuminous sparks highlighting the first, and most overtly accomplished, coming of American indie rock, those golden and precious years lying roughly between 1979 and 1985. An era so filled with purity, it reigns supreme to this day with an embarrassment of musical riches. Many of them straight from the fingers of Kirkwood/Kirkwood/ Bostrom.

Always recognized as an extremely dexterous and deft live act, the Puppets used 2008 to continue to stretch out the new line up (with Ted Marcus now a full time replacement for founding drummer Derrick Bostrom). The band joined Built to Spill, and later, Stone Temple Pilots, for well received jaunts across the U.S. The Puppets also toured Europe, and took part in each of the 2008 All Tomorrow's Parties festivals, performing Meat Puppets II as part of ATP's Dont Look Back series. By year's end, the shows were "almost" 100% acoustic. "Almost" because Curt was playing a Gibson Hummingbird plugged into his pedal board, allowing him to work his eboard, allowing him to work his effects just like an electric guitar. The simplicity of the set up belied the sort of arresting dynamics that Muse and Radiohead aim to capture, albeit by spending tens of thousands of quid in arena production.

Signed in early 2008 to ultra-artist friendly Megaforce Records, the Puppets found themselves once again at work exploring the vast creative landscape that has defined the band since it burst forth with its majestic debut for SST, Meat Puppets. In between '08 tours, the Puppets wrote and recorded a new album, Sewn Together, the trio's second full length since 2007. Sewn Together began with the band laboring under all sorts of questions as to what artistic and sonic direction it would strike.

Afterall, band leader Curt Kirkwood openly acknowledged the rather brusque approach he chose in crafting the one-off made for Anodyne Records, "Rise To Your Knees":
"In the ‘80s, we used to just crap this stuff out," he notes. "Those SST records cost, like, five grand apiece, if that much, and those are the records that made people like us. Later, when we got into a position to work in bigger studios with outside people, we'd wind up spending a whole bunch of money and having to satisfy the people who gave us that money. We did that all through the ‘90s, and I'm just not interested in doing that anymore."
"Now, if I can get away with it, I'll make a record as cheap as I can and put as little work as I can into it, which is what we did with this one. I don't like putting a lot time into it. We cut a track, and if we've played it halfway right, we're done with it."

Of course, none of Curt's ideas about how to effectively make a record degrade the music he crafts. Integrity grips him as if a Viking vise. Like Dylan, he is merely determined to streamline, to avoid overthinking and obsessing with studio elements. He has delivered a living catalogue of historical records, using close to primitive tools. It is a lesson in technique that today's too-pimped up pop "artists" ought to study, and thankfully, there are a few bands that do.

In the case of the new album, Curt and Cris chose a home town studio that oIn the case of the new album, Curt and Cris chose a home town studio that offered analog process. To help add purity. And with production helmed by Curt, creative freedom arrived du jour. With no contrived map to follow, the best friend of artistry -spontaneity- governed. Indeed, going into the studio, only Curt knew what songs he planned to cut. The label didn't ask and neither did the band. When the guiding minstrel is as honed and proven as Curt, it is both easy and incumbent to roll with the pitch.

TTrue to his vows not to beat down a session, in less than two weeks' time Curt had effectively corralled his necessary and sufficient musical elements: the songs, the band, his son Elmo, the compatible recording team at the Salt Mine Studio in Mesa, and Phoenix-based pianist William Joseph. Joseph's role illustrates how spontaneity is a giving gift. He was initially invited into the studio to help with some fills, yet by day's end, was contributing a bounty of beautiful passages that bespeak a mature flushing out of Curt's deeply embedded genetic sense of melody. Witness "Sapphire," "Clone," and "Smoke." At first listen, one is tempted with an impression of experimental Pink Floyd "Wall" like channeling here, but accuracy's sake will note that the operatic idiom behind these songs has been exhibited at least as far back as 1995's "No Joke", and subsequent trials from Curt's solo master piece, "Snow", and the texturally generous "Rise To Your Knees".

Now, however, the breadth of instrumentation is no longer in the back seat. It's right there in the guts of the entire record. And while it is not overstatement to declare a connection here to the heights of the E Street Band, the results from last summer's sessions clearly continue the Puppets' trademark forging of subtle yet iconoclastic lyrical sweetness and remarkable musicianship. Were a short description required, confidence is the defining term and attitude. This is a record that is brilliantly framed by the band's sometimes folksy, always fluid wanderings. The Puppets gladly let the material step out as first fiddle, content with understanding songs this strong only come along once in a great while, and better to serve them than the other way around.

It is what makes the Puppets musings so difficult to classify. They ambitiously dart the melodic spectrum between buoyant pop structure like album-opener Sewn Together and the grand sweep of "Clone", two of the precision-perfect gems that will come to represent this record as a keeper. The album rides to close in pure pop fashion. The infectious "Love Mountain", a song that harkens back better than a decade, at last weaving itself free of Curt's inner aware-ness, emerges taut yet jangly enough to please George Harrison and George Martin. That's no exaggeration, either. Sure, absolutely, Springsteen and the Beatles and Pink Floyd are mighty comparisons, but let's face it, what is due is due. Beatles and Pink Floyd are mighty comparisons, but let's face it, what is due is due.

Looking ahead, to May '09, the Puppets start the first leg of extensive road work celebrating the new record, but as with every Puppets' tour, the show will be certain to range over the course of performance afforded it by the Puppets' endearingly adventurous career . The Sewn Together tour kicks off May 12th in Los Angeles at the Mint.

Oasis's Liam Gallagher To Launch Clothing Line

"Wearing top clothes and singing fu*king in tune is pretty important isn't it... well, I could do both." Liam Gallagher

The new clothing label Pretty Green is swiftly approaching launch by Oasis member Liam Gallagher. The line will include limited edition items. The name Pretty Green, obviously a nod to the song "Pretty Green" by Paul Weller's much adored mod band The jam, is also a slang term for money, although Gallagher states he is not doing the line for monetary reasons. And he doesn't even wink when he says it. Whether or not the clothes will follow a strict mod aesthetic remains to be seen. One can expect that with his reverence for mod history - the line should be quality. The line will include a few traditionally mod items such as desert boots, but Gallagher has also remarked "I'm not into the skinny look," which is a bit confusing to a yank with an understanding of mod clothing from the sixties. Anywayi if you can figure it all out by watching his yammering promo clip - do let me know.

Tinted Windows to Release Debut Album April 21

As the website states - Tinted Windows are: Taylor Hanson (lead vocals), James Iha (guitar), Adam Schlesinger (bass), and Bun E. Carlos (drums).

This is my second post about this supergroup of sorts, (and I have yet to hear the album), but I have to comment on what I've heard thusfar. I know that people are having varying reactions to this band. These range from laughter to adoration. I'm sure the die hard Hanson fans were loving this band before they heard a note, but I've read a lot of hipper than thou blathering and I'm just not having it.

I was listening to the single "Kind of a Girl" and I love it. Remember the Kings Switchin' To Glide? It's a bit like that. Or maybe The Knack. It is infectiously gooey bubble gum infused, new wave tinged, Power Pop. And as a fan of Big Star and Jellyfish - I do not use the term power pop lightly. It's the sort of a tune that makes you want to put the top down and crank the volume up while the breeze blows through your hair. And everyone, no matter how hip they think they are, knows that's a good feeling.

Tinted Windows are scheduled to appear on Letterman April 20 and their debut will be available April 21St via S-Curve Records. The video for "Kind of a Girl" looks like an 80s t.v. appearance and it's very clever, (not unlike TRS-80 "Tinted", but with less kitschy tactics). Smashing Pumpkins Frontman BIlly Corgan Announces Drummer Jimmy Chamberlin Has Quit the Group

Billy Corgan who is planning on recording new material under the Pumpkins moniker has announced via the website www.smashingpumkins.com, that drummer Jimmy Chamberlin has quit the band. So it seems the band that began its live career with a drum machine again finds itself without a human to perform percussive duties.

Whether that situation is temporary or permanent remains to be seen, but one can assume there is no shortage of drummers prepared to pick up the sticks in Chamberlin's absence. Chamberlin who has had a rocky past with the band due to personal issues, joined the band in 1988 and played on all of the bands albums with the exception of Adore.

Alt Country's Rhett Miller (Old 97s) To Release Solo LP

His new record Rhett Miller will hit stores June 9, with a tour to follow. The album is a personal affair with a beat you can bop to... or something.

“My approach to songwriting has always been to take a heavy subject and put it to a bouncy tune. This record takes that trick to the next level.” Miller says. “Don’t get me wrong, there are some rays of sunshine on the album, but there is a lot of deep night.” He explains further, “The death of my grandmother, the suicide of my hero, David Foster Wallace. In my head, I was sort of in a dark place when I made this record.” Laughing, he adds, “It’s still a fun record to listen to. It’s a fine line you gotta walk, right?” Additionally he added “Sometimes’ came out of hearing my two-year-old daughter singing to herself in her crib one morning. I took her little tune and fleshed it out into first a chorus and then a whole song.”

Rhett Miller has also released three previous solo albums, Mythologies, recorded during his junior year in high school and produced by future Old 97’s co-founder, Murry Hammond, in 1989, 2002’s The Instigator, and The Believer in 2006. While based in Dallas, Miller and Hammond formed Old 97’s in 1993.

Deastro To Release Debut LP Moondagger

Detroit band Deastro To Release Debut LP Moondagger June 25th On Ghostly International.
When Randolph Chabot, the 22-year-old auteur behind Deastro, is asked about the title of his new album, he recounts "a dream about a prince, a kingdom, an evil King of Darkness, and a search for the mythical “Moondagger,” the bearer of which wields ultimate power. And while Moondagger." That all sounds lie a bunch of D&D malarky to me. OR a riff on Tenacious D's "Wonderboy" and the mucky muck. Despite all that - I like what I've heard.

A Message From KRS Artists Mecca Normal

Hi, Jean Smith of Mecca Normal (Kill Rock Stars) here.

I wasn't expecting to be impacted by the economic downturn when I was laid off from my retail job at an eco-friendly clothing store. The company decided to close the much-loved, quaint, creaky-old-floorboard store to concentrate on their wholesale and online business. As an almost fifty-year-old (single, debt-free) musician, novelist and painter, I am perhaps better equipped to deal with variations on the theme of employment and income, better than people who felt they had security. Rather than look for a new part time job, I'm hitting the road with Mecca Normal to present "How Art & Music Can Change the World" -- an art exhibit, lecture and performance event in university and high school classrooms, bookstores, art galleries and music venues.

We want to connect with bloggers and radio people to inspire readers and listeners towards cultural activism -- to fortify a new optimism that cultural activists can impact progressive social change.

All of this information is on a webpage -- it's easier to look at.

Media One Sheet: http://meccanormaltour.wordpress.com
Mecca Normal -- 25th Anniversary Tour -- itinerary at bottom

"Arguably the greatest rock band without a rhythm section ever, the duo of acid-voiced singer Jean Smith and guitar hero David Lester must be seen to be believed." --Douglas Wolk

"How Art & Music Can Change the World" -- Jean Smith and David Lester of the literary underground rock duo Mecca Normal intend to inspire audiences to consider adding political content to their creative self-expression, to fortify a new optimism that cultural activists can impact progressive social change. http://howartandmusiccanchangetheworld.blogspot.com

"Who cares if there's underground culture or not? Gap-Coke-Sony-Time-Warner satisfies our needs... don't they?"

The focus of the art exhibit is David Lester’s Inspired Agitators Poster Series http://www.freewebs.com/meccanormal/inspiredagitators.htm

I made a 9 minute film to represent our content. It would be great if you could embed it -- if you do online stuff. The code below needs to be in plain text. I made the screen size quite small.

We don't have new CDs or books out, but we do have new songs to perform and a couple of re-releases in iTunes.

Smarten UP! Records re-releases two Mecca Normal albums in iTunes -- Who Shot Elvis? (Matador, 1997) and Sitting on Snaps (Matador, 1995).

Jean Smith is the author of two published novels and the recipient of two Canada Council for the Arts Awards as a professional writer of creative fiction. David Lester is a small press publisher of fiction and award-winning poetry and the author of The Gruesome Acts of Capitalism. Together, as the legendary rock duo Mecca Normal, they've released 13 CDs (Kill Rock Stars, K Records, Matador).

The Observer was our last CD (Kill Rock Stars, 2006). I made a video for our song Attraction is Ephemeral -- it was accepted at MTV and was included in a few film festivals. Here's the code to embed it (in plain text):

I've attached a few recent photos and the posters.

New songs -- demos -- on MySpace: http://www.myspace.com/meccanormal

I'd be into communicating further, by phone or email.

Thanks,
Jean Smith

Nelly Furtado Releases Fritz Helder & The Phantoms

Grammy award winner and multi-platinum selling recording artist, Nelly Furtado, has launched her music company, "Nelstar Music" and will introduce Canadian independent recording artist Fritz Helder & The Phantoms as the first act signed to the company. The group's album, Greatest Hits will be released on July 7 throughout North America via Last Gang Records distributed labels' division Last Gang Labels which currently works through Universal for Canada and Fontana/Universal for the U.S. International releases are also being planned.

"I've been thinking about a way to help Fritz Helder for a while and this venture grew out of my love for the band, their art and their work ethic. I am as committed as they are to bringing their creativity to the world," says Furtado.

Fritz Helder & The Phantoms is an electro-pop foursome from Toronto who started out as a dance troupe put together by choreographer Fritz Helder, and previously appeared with Nelly Furtado on tour. As word of mouth quickly spread on the group's electrifying performances they soon began booking their own gigs with acts like Lady Gaga, Dragonette and Semi-Precious Weapons.

The group features Fritz Helder (vocals, key-tar), Silk Helder (guitar, synths), Pastel Supernova (vocals) and Diego Superstar (vocals, synth, beats). The first single, out this spring, is "Lagerfeld Lady" and is an ode to the fashion icon, Karl Lagerfeld. To check out the video for "Lagerfeld Lady" visit the group's website which reveals an incredible menagerie of video, music, fashion, remixes, and an impressive monthly online fanzine, "Moda Cinque."

"We love Nelly and this new partnership is a very exciting opportunity for us. It's empowering to work with a combination of people who believe in our project and are willing to help us see it through," remarks Fritz, the group's main vocalist.

Last Gang Labels is the distributed labels arm of Last Gang Records (home to artists such as Chromeo, Metric and MSTRKRFT) and was started to provide distribution, marketing and consultation services to smaller independent labels and independent artists.

"Nelly has been a long time friend and we at Last Gang are honored that she has entrusted us to help launch her music company and assist in working with Fritz Helder & The Phantoms," says Chris Taylor, Last Gang head.

Fritz Helder & The Phantoms will help close out fashion week in Toronto with a special live performance at Top of The Burroughes with Parallels, DINAMO AZARI & ALIXANDER III and TUXEDOMASK. Details below:

Ultrachorus

Sukpatch founder brings history on Beastie’s Grand Royal label to the table as UltraChorus. “Words Kept Talking / Planetman” 7-Inch abailable now.

Official bio:
BIO

The duo known as UltraChorus is Chris Heidman and Jeff Lorentzen. The two spend nearly everyday in their Minneapolis SoTM studio composing and making beats at an Olympic level.

Now they bring you the debut single, “Words Kept Talking”, available only on 7-inch vinyl and digital download. Chris’ background is in cut and paste indie rock while Jeff is a product of late nineties Hip-Hop and R&B. The sound is electronic, but within each song there is something analog and organic that makes it feel familiar.

Chris began his career as half of the late 90’s electro indie band Sukpatch, pioneering beat driven music for the twee set by way of the Beastie’s Grand Royal label. After a small bit of indie cult status was achieved, Sukpatch laid down their samplers and called it done in 2004.

Carefully straddling the line between distinguished gentlemen and accomplished degenerate, Jeff has spent most of his life in the studio. A producer through and through, this is his debut on the other side of the microphone.

Chris and Jeff met in 2005 while composing and producing for the same employer, a wayward billionaire with an attraction to the creative. It wasn’t long before the two started collaborating and began working exclusively in their own SoTM studios. After wrapping on a Czech R&B album and a Japanese Pop EP the two started recording the first tracks of what would become UltraChorus. This highly polished bit of electronic pop falls comfortably between Hot Chip and T-Pain due slight Phoenix.

Jack White Has A New Project - The Dead Weather and More

Taked unedited from the label's site:
Third Man Records, the imprint on which Jack White releases all of his music including The White Stripes and The Raconteurs, now has a physical location in downtown Nashville. White's new Third Man Records building serves as the company HQ and houses the label's offices plus a vinyl record store, photo studio, dark room and performance stage.

In celebration of the building's opening, the label’s newest rock outfit, The Dead Weather, delivered their first public performance with a set including songs from their forthcoming album, Horehound. The band, fronted by Alison Mosshart (known to music fans as one half of The Kills) includes The Raconteurs' Jack Lawrence on bass, Dean Fertita from Queens Of The Stone Age on guitar and Jack White on drums and vocals. In addition to playing, White also served as producer on Horehound. Recording took place earlier this year in just three weeks at the newly constructed Third Man Studio, designed from the ground up by White. Third Man plans a June release for the album.

Around 150 fans, family and friends attended the Third Man Records grand opening event and exchanged their letter-pressed invitations for limited edition 7" vinyl pressings of The Dead Weather's debut single "Hang You From The Heavens" (b/w a stealth cover of Gary Numan's "Are Friends Electric?"). The Dead Weather hand painted each of the 150 7" records that also included a different photo booth strip of the band members. Downloads of these two songs are now available exclusively through iTunes.
