I blogged a while back about surprisingly liking this new band Locksley. I saw a video (yeah, it happens) and thought "I dig this." Anyway they are not only opening up for Ray Davies on his latest tour but according to a press release:
"Brooklyn-Based Garage Pop Outfit Selected To Back Ray Davies On Stage 12-City US Tour
Without the support of a major label system the band was able to accomplish unprecedented success based on the merit of their songwriting, landing highly coveted spots on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and Jimmy Kimmel Live as well as placement of their hit single My Kind Of Lover in J.J. Abrams' much anticipated Cloverfield. They were also awarded the honor of composing Why Can't I Be You for the MTV show of the same name and the track's music video won mtvU's The Freshman and in an unprecedented move, the band was featured by MTV as Artist of The Week for two consecutive weeks in the month of September 2008."

Roger Joseph Manning (Jellyfish, Air, Beck) News
Roger Joseph Manning's latest release Catnip Dynamite will see a U.S. release in February via Oglio Records. It's a pop classic with some dark twists and turns to which fans of Jellyfish will no doubt be accustomed.
And I should mention that I recently ordered his (out of print) Logan's Sanctuary cd from his website and he was kind enough to include an autograph and a silly drawing. I don't collect signatures, but it made me smile. For fans who do collect that sort of thing - order something from his website's shop and you just might get some hand drawn or signed packaging yourself. You can also get a dvd of his newly released Fuji Rock Fest performance or some Imperial Drag or T.V. Eyes stuff. Visit:www.rogerjosephmanningjr.com for fun and frolicking.
I never saw this video from his last album Solid State Warrior (Japan)/ Land of Pure Imagination (America) "Too LAte For US Now"

World Music Reissue News From Crammed Label
"CRAMMED DISCS! RE-ISSUING TWO CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE GEMS FROM THEIR CATALOGUE ON NOVEMBER 18th, 2008:
Bebel Gilberto : "Tanto Tempo"
Suba : "São Paulo Confessions"
The daughter of João Gilberto (who co-invented bossa nova 50 years ago with his friend Tom Jobim), Bebel Gilberto was living in New York and couldn't get a suitable record label in the US or Brazil when Brussels-based independent label Crammed signed her worldwide back in '99. Released in early 2000 via Crammed's sub-label Ziriguiboom (and entrusted to the able hands of Six Degrees Records for US distribution), Bebel's debut album "Tanto Tempo" captivated audiences around the globe with its delicate mix of classic bossa nova and cool electronica. It became one of the greatest international successes in the history of Brazilian music, totalling over one million sales worldwide. "Tanto Tempo" was nominated for a Grammy (as were Bebel's successful second and third albums, also produced and released by Crammed).
"Tanto Tempo" was produced by Suba, a Serbian composer/producer who moved to Brazil in the early 90s, and also got signed to Ziriguiboom. Crammed then introduced him to Bebel Gilberto. Entitled "São Paulo Confessions", Suba's own debut album became an emblematic, cult record, and was the key inspiration for many artists who subsequently blended Brazilian, lounge & electronic music. The album also introduced a very young & talented vocalist by the name of Cibelle, who has gone on to release two great albums on Crammed/Ziriguiboom, with more to come. Tragically, Suba died in a fire which erupted in his flat, a few days prior to the release of "São Paulo Confession".
Both of these albums are now being re-issued by Crammed, and will be made available through Crammed's distribution arrangement with Ryko.

And don't forget that the LA premiere of the movie is Monday night.

Andy Taylor (Ex Duran Duran) Spills His Guts / What am I reading?
What are you reading? (I ask - As if people leave comments.) I just finished reading Twilight which was a bit juvenille for my taste, but a quick little vampire read if you're into that type of thing. The film is being released at the end of the month and I'll likely see it.
Favorite Vampire Films:
Near Dark
The Lost Boys
The Hunger
Nosferatu (Original and Herzog)
Interview With the Vampire
Shadow of the Vampire
Martin
Dracula (Bela)
and Bram Stoker's Dracula gets a (dis)honerable mention for many laugh outloud moments that weren't meant to be funny. No - not just the ass wig. I love the costumes and cinematography, and Kilar's fantastic score, but Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder portrayals of Jonathan and and just terrible. (But didn't you love Tom Waits as Renfield?)
Now I am reading Absolute Beginners - which I have started and misplaced repeatedly since about '85. This time I refuse to mislay the book until I have completed it! There was a musical version - if you recall - in the eighties. I liked it - cheesy at it was. You have to appreciate David Bowie doing an American accent whilst dancing on a giant typewriter. Don't you? It's about London in the 60s and mods and the dawn of the teenager.
When I've completed that I promised my cousin I would read She's Come Undone, because she mailed it to me. Then my friend is supposed to lend me his copy of Wild Boy: My Life in Duran Duran by Andy Taylor(Grand Central Publishing). He allegedly dishes a bit and fesses up to the coke whore rumors, but mostly he keeps it civil. I wish someone would spill their dirty laundry. HE quit the band twice for chrissakes!
