The Dead Weather

Really nice live version of Van Morrison's "You Just Can't Win" (@ ACL 2009) sung by Jack White w/ The Dead Weather.

Thanks to youtube user mashfest for posting.

New Music From Glint

Click here to listen to Glint performing their song "Freak" (from their self titled release,) at The Brooklyn Bowl in NYC.

Visit the bands' myspace
here.

Fans of bombastic, synthesized tunes with just enough heart to show you the living, breathing human behind the knobs will find kindred spirits among the members of New York-based Glint. The quintet strikes an interesting balance between the excesses of Muse and the slyness of David Bowie ... single "Freak" is simultaneously danceable and thought-provoking."

Ólafur Arnalds

Ólafur Arnalds' second album ...and they have escaped the weight of darkness , will be released June 8.

Stripmall Architecture

Stripmall Architecture have an EP coming out this Spring titled Feathers For Factory. To listen to the song "Pripyat" click here.

More tour dates to be announced shortly:
April 23 | San Francisco, CA | Cafe du Nord
April 28 | Albuquerque, NM | The Launchpad
April 29 | Scottsdale, AZ | Martini Ranch
April 30 | Los Angeles, CA | Taix 321 Lounge

Bio:
As members of San Francisco’s celebrated Halou, Ryan and Rebecca Coseboom built up a remarkable body of material and worked with a wide range of iconoclastic artists including DJ Shadow (on his infamous Radiohead remix), Low, Cocteau Twins guitarist Robin Guthrie, and the Velvet Underground’s John Cale. When Halou came to an end after a US tour with indie legend Bob Mould, they regrouped quickly and launched their new project, Stripmall Architecture.

In 2009, Stripmall Architecture released We Were Flying Kites, a bold debut that was “an impressive step forward” (John Richards, KEXP) and quickly gained support from indie radio including being touted by KCRW and KEXP as their song of the day.

The band has recently solidified its four-piece lineup with guitarist Tim Hingston and drummer Patrick Harte and regularly play to sell-out crowds in the Bay Area.

Now, in 2010, Stripmall Architecture are poised to release their next album, Feathersongs for Factory Girls, entirely funded by their dedicated fanbase across the US and the globe. Radium Girls is the first taste of the new album and precedes Rebecca’s upcoming guest vocal spot with James Lavelle’s UNKLE project.

Saredren Wells

Saredren Wells has planned a Spring tour in support of Memories Are Hunting Horns. The album will be released May 11th, and you can check it out at the website here. A limited edition (500) vinyl LP with a 4 postcard set and a coupon for a free mp3 copy of Memories Are Hunting Horns... can be pre-ordered at Louisvilleisforlovers.com.

Album info:
He contacted many of his childhood artistic heroes, including David Grubbs (Gastr del Sol) and Brian McMahan (Slint, The For Carnation), who became something akin to spiritual advisers, and Rachel Grimes (of famed chamber collective Rachel's), who he asked(she politely obliged) to oversee him in his string writing efforts. Wells then tracked the album with a string of Louisville luminaries, doing initial work with Paul Oldham(of Palace Brothers fame) and Parlour/Sapat's Steve Good(who engineered an Evergreen 7” Wells was fond of growing up) before finally settling in with friend and producer Kevin Ratterman (Elliot, Wax Fang), who served as a kind of project supervisor, helping to piece everything together and capture whatever final performances were needed. Wells then travelled to Louisville's historical artistic sister city, Chicago, IL, doing final touch-ups and mixing both at John McIntyre's (Tortoise) SOMA Studios and Steve Albini's (you know who Steve Albini is) Electrical Audio. Looking back, Wells figures he worked with just about every artist that influenced him while he was growing up. “It's pretty amazing, really. I got to meet and work with many of the people who have made this city what it is, and with their help and encouragement I made the record I've always dreamed of making.”

NXNE Film Spotlight: Don Letts

Press release unedited:

NXNE Film Spotlight: Don Letts
Acclaimed British Director Premieres Carnival! And Strummerville
Superstonic Sound: The Rebel Dread Tells The Letts Story Documentaries
Additional Films Announced: Circa 1977: The Diodes/ Music Makes A City/ Thomas Pynchon: A Journey Into The Mind Of...

TORONTO, March 29, 2010 - North by Northeast (NXNE) announces the first round of film programming for 2010. NXNE Film brings the best in music-centric films from documentary to drama, and screens 40 films from June 16-20 during NXNE around the city of Toronto.

NXNE Film curates a program featuring the recent work of Don Letts, the Grammy Award winning British director. Letts brings his latest film Carnival! to NXNE for a North American premiere. The film tells the story of the Notting Hill Carnival which takes over the notable west London neighbourhood every August. Carnival! presents a visual mosaic of colour and music of the largest street festival in the world outside of Trinidad & Tobago.

Letts also screens his film Strummerville which recently played at SXSW and has its Canadian premiere at NXNE. The film documents the work of the Strummerville charity which was set up to enable young musicians to get their art and music out to the world in the spirit and attitude of The Clash's Joe Strummer.

Over his long film career Letts has told the story of countless lives, and now it is time to hear his story in the North American premiere of Superstonic Sound: The Rebel Dread. Director Raphael Erichsen spotlights the Letts family legacy that mirrors the history of BASS in the UK from Dub, Reggae and Punk to 80s pop, Hip Hop and Dubstep.

Additional Films confirmed to date include:

Circa 1977: The Diodes - D: Aldo Erdic (Short film)
[World Premiere] In the span of one year, the Diodes opened Toronto's first punk club, Crash 'n' Burn, released Canada's first punk album on a major label and helped instigate an explosive punk scene. Interviews with John Catto, John Hamilton and Ian Mackay

Music Makes a City - D: Owsley Brown III & Jerome Hiler
[Canadian Premiere] In 1948, a small, struggling, semi-professional orchestra in Louisville, Kentucky began a daring project to commission new works from contemporary composers around the world. The Commissioning Project grew far beyond expectations. Featuring music by Aaron Copland, William Schuman, Roger Sessions, Elliott Carter, Joan Tower, Norman Dello Joio, and Harold Shapero

Thomas Pynchon A Journey into the Mind of... - D: Fosco Dubini
[North American premiere] A film about the cult author Thomas Pynchon (Gravity's Rainbow), who for 30 years has avoided public appearances, giving no interviews, and not even allowing himself to be photographed. Featuring the music of The Residents

16 Years, 650 Bands, 50 Stages, 40 Films, 15 Conference Sessions, 7 Days. The North by Northeast (NXNE) festival experience takes over Toronto with the best new bands and international headliners, screenings of dynamic music films, compelling conference village sessions, rock n' roll keynotes and insights from the most forward-thinking interactive media innovators, and a charity soccer match. This year's festival runs from June 14-20, 2010. Visit NXNE online at www.nxne.com.

PEACHES (Featuring Shunda K) "BILLIONAIRE"

Peaches ain't in Kansas no more. I'm not into this, but it's kind of interesting.

Don't believe the Hype / The xx

So I heard this band The xx are supposed to be great. Or so the hipsters who are way cooler than I am say. Anyway I caught them in the wee hours this morning on Jimmy Fallon and hated them with a burning passion not dissimilar to my reaction to 4 Non Blondes. Anyway I wish someone had posted the appearance because the band looks like Pugsley Addams got together with the kid from Gummo and formed a band. A terrible band.

The Lions Rampant Crafting Catchy Garage Rock Tinged Tunes

GROOVY ALERT! I'm listening to the first track "Your Love" off the album It's Fun To Do Bad Things and really digging it.

The Lions Rampant "Lights On"

Good tune, but for my money my least favorite on the record!

Catchy no? It's like a poppy Mudhoney maybe? I think I'll investigate further.
Visit their myspace here

“On Bad Things, we wanted to expand our musical horizons and focus tighter on songwriting while still remaining true to our wild and free rock n roll / punk rock beginnings. The album is a celebration of figuring out love and pushing one’s boundaries,” says frontman and vocalist Stuart Mackenzie. “It tells the story of a young romantic and his search for love, taking things to the limit, enjoying the nightlife, falling in and out of love. These songs are a ‘diary’ of sorts…definitely a coming of age for us. The album title is a tongue-in-cheek. Rock n’ roll has always been about bad behavior as The Shangrilas once said. But we’re not what you would call ‘bad evil’ of course. The Lions Rampant us definitely ‘good evil.’ And that’s what this record is all about…” adds Mackenzie.

The Luyas Premiere Take Away Shows By Vincent Moon

The Luyas have been my favourite band for the past year and a half. Listening to their music has always been an intense adventure, a little trip over the ocean, over an ocean, wherever I was. The balance between Jessie's voice and their constant subtle experiments on pop formats was already obsessing me, but I will never forget this little film we did in Montreal, over an afternoon in october 2009. Never before such a musical genius was so obvious, so easy to follow, so exciting to film. The simple way Jessie Stein is always challenging her audience when playing is a little miracle of sincerity and dedication. - Vincent Moon

Jack White Has Many Balls...

in the air. Not only did Jack and Meg White's ltd. edition White Stripes UTGWNL box set see release this week, and he produced the latest single by his wife Karen Elson (not under the Mildred moniker) but according to NME he's just recorded a song with Jay Z.

According to NME White is staying mum on whether or not the song will see release, telling GQ "I just did a record with Jay-Z." Other details were limited as he added, "We did a song together a few weeks ago. It was incredible. I played him something that I've been kicking around for a while and he immediately came out with words for it. It's unbelievable sounding."

And new White Stripes music is (still) "coming soon."

I'll be diving into my box set tonight! I'm giddy like a wee girl.

BLURT Magazine: "The band may musically resemble The Cure, early The Ocean Blue ("Between Something and Nothing") Slowdive and even The Killers in some ways, but they are no cheap imitation - in fact, they may even be destined to be greater than those bands. Veil Veil Vanish is certainly a band to keep a close eye on."

NPR Presents Music and Memories With Rosanne Cash

Unedited press release:
NPR ON LOCATION WITH SINGER, SONGWRITER AND AUTHOR ROSANNE CASH SATURDAY, MAY 1
NPR’S MICHELE NORRIS HOSTS AN EXTRAORDINARY EVENING
OF MUSIC AND CONVERSATION
VIKING TO PUBLISH CASH’S LONG AWAITED MEMOIR TITLED COMPOSED

March 10, 2010; Washington, D.C. – Rosanne Cash has earned many titles. Singer. Songwriter. Mother. Author. Grammy Award winner. Keeper of her family’s music legacy. The gifted artist appears at The Paramount Theatre in Seattle on Saturday, May 1 at 8PM for a great night of music and conversation during “NPR On Location with Rosanne Cash,” hosted by NPR’s Michele Norris of All Things Considered. Seattle Theatre Group presents this special event – the first and only of its kind – produced by NPR in collaboration with Seattle NPR Member stations KPLU and KUOW, and KOPB in Portland.

Tickets go on sale Friday, March 12 at 10AM. Reserved seats (priced from $35-45) will be available for purchase at The Paramount Theatre box office: www.stgpresents.org

This evening will peel back the curtain on Cash’s life, her writing and her family, and the soundtrack that runs through it all. She is the eldest daughter of the late Johnny Cash and the daughter and step-daughter of two strong women, all of whom informed her outlook on life as an artist and the mother of five. The centerpiece of the event will be a conversation between Cash and Michele Norris; Cash will also perform a number of songs, including selections from her most recent album, The List. She will be accompanied by her husband and producer, John Leventhal. The program will end with an opportunity for the audience to ask questions.

Cash is one of the most prolific and preeminent American singer-songwriters, having released 11 albums since her self-titled debut in 1978. She won a Grammy in 1985 for the song “I Don’t Know Why You Don’t Want Me,” and has received nine other nominations. She has had 11 No. 1 country hit singles, 21 Top 40 country singles and two gold records. The List, Cash’s first-ever covers album, is a collection of 12 classic songs she selected from a list of "100 Essential Country Songs" that her father gave her when she was a teenager. The album has earned widespread praise from media outlets across the country, and has become one of the most popular records of her career. On August 10, Viking will publish Cash’s long-awaited memoir, Composed. Cash writes candidly about her upbringing, her development as an artist and her current life.

Free MP3 Garbo's Daughter

Garbo's Daughter and Burger Records have released a funtastic new EP titled Goes Pop!.

If the retro girl group tinged rock tunes weren't catchy enough to be worth the purchase price - they have wonderful pop culture sprinkles on top. Among the dialogue included at the beginning of songs is a teen girl moment of longing from the made for t.v. classic Sooner Or Later, and a Steve McDonald quote from Dave Markey's cult classic Desperate Teenage Lovedolls.

Listen and see if you can spot where they lifted the other samples. If you enjoy Be Your Own Pet and Shonen Knife, give Garbo's Daughter a listen. The 4 song EP cassette tape is available now and it makes me giddy. A full length album is forthcoming.

Visit the band's myspace right about here.

Rhino Reissues The Stooges

Rhino Handmade Honors the Group’s 2010 Induction With Collector’s Edition Of

The Stooges Debut Featuring Previously Unissued Studio Track “Asthma Attack”

On CD and 7" Single

Pre-Order Next Week at Rhino.com, Ships In Late April

LOS ANGELES – The Stooges—Iggy Pop, Ron and Scott Asheton, and Dave Alexander—may have sounded like they were from the Stone Age, but the Ann Arbor quartet predicted the future of rock ’n’ roll more than 40 years ago with the untamable sonic assault of its self-titled 1969 debut on Elektra Records. Soon after the band’s March 15 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Rhino Handmade will celebrate the visionary group’s historic feedback-laden clarion call with a Collector’s Edition of that debut.

Scheduled to ship in late April, THE STOOGES will be available for pre-order next week exclusively at www.rhino.com for a suggested list price of $49.98. The 26-track collection will be issued in a 7" x 7" hardbound booklet that contains two CDs along with a 7" single that features the previously unreleased track “Asthma Attack.” A staple of the group’s early live shows, this is the first time a studio version of the song has been released.

The Collector’s Edition’s first disc combines the original album’s eight songs with producer John Cale’s original mixes, including unreleased versions of “We Will Fall” and “Ann.” Also featured is the mono single version of “I Wanna Be Your Dog,” a song Rolling Stone named #438 on its list of “500 Greatest Songs Of All Time”—right behind Elvis’ “Love Me Tender.”

The second disc opens with “Asthma Attack,” a breathless spectacle of a song written when The Stooges’ 20-minute live sets were dominated by arty experiments in feedback and improvisation. The remainder of the disc presents an alternate version of the original album with alternate takes of every song, including full versions of “No Fun” and “Ann,” plus unreleased versions of “We Will Fall,” “Real Cool Time,” and the album closer, “Little Doll.”

Despite lackluster commercial and critical response at the time of its release, THE STOOGES has withstood the test of time. “The Stooges’ influence is legion—to name all of the bands, singers, and would-be rock stars who drank from the well could fill 1,000 phone books,” writes author Mike Edison in the collection’s liner notes. “There is not a hard or heavy band anywhere on the planet that’s not in earnest awe of The Stooges.”

MP3 Caribou "Odessa"

Click here to download a free MP3 of "Odessa" by Caribou.

Press release:
About a year ago, Caribou mastermind Dan Snaith couldn’t swim. On a good day, he might get a decent doggy paddle going but, really, he could barely stay afloat. All that changed when his wife got him swimming lessons for Christmas. “Then I became completely obsessed with it and now I swim constantly,” he says. “The only times I really left the house in the past year were either to go out to a club late at night or, in the middle of making music during the day, I’d go to swim every day. It was important to get some distance, and ideas would percolate around in my head as I was swimming away. So it seemed like a theme that was appropriate.”

With its absorption of club culture sounds weaved within subtle pop frameworks, Swim is Caribou’s masterpiece—the record he’s wanted to bring to fruition for as long as he’s been making music.

A Canadian from small-town Ontario now based in England, Snaith has been a leading figure in electronic music over the past decade. A mathematics scholar and an ingenious multi-instrumentalist/composer, he surprised critics and fans with 2007’s Andorra, a brilliant, electro-tinged pop breakthrough with a timeless grace that made most year-end ‘“Best of”’ lists and won Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize. After the startling infectiousness of Andorra, Swim is a more complex, multi-layered affair—ripe with fascinating rhythms, instrumentation, and vocals (including those of Born Ruffians’ Luke Lalonde, who appears on “Jamelia”)—that becomes more alluring with each listen. And it’s got Caribou floating.

“The real substance of the sound of the record for me is this idea of making dance music that consists of liquid elements,” Snaith explains. “Rather than sounding metallic and rigid, everything is washing around you while you’re listening to it—from one ear to another —but also the pitch is oscillating up and down, and each instrument is going in and out of tune with everything else. Sounds are emerging and disappearing, like everything is made out of water. Dance music is very much associated with very crisp, metallic, clean sounds. I like this idea of dance music that just washes around with fluidity.”

“I feel like it’s the most ‘me’ album that I’ve made,” Snaith continues. “In the past, oftentimes part of the excitement of making music for me was hearing someone else’s music—some long-forgotten record from the past—and deciphering how to make those sounds and incorporate those ideas into something of my own. This record is much less a product of its influences. I think this is the record that I’m most proud of because it’s the most ‘me’ in the way things sound; I feel like I have my own vocabulary now. So much of contemporary music is soaked in referencing this or that. I wanted people to put the record on and not be able to say, ‘This sounds like so- and- so.’ I want people to say, ‘This sounds like Dan!’ It’s what everybody wants—to have their fingerprint on the music they’re making. I feel like I’ve achieved that to a greater extent than I have in the past, and that’s exciting.”

Naked Raygun To Enter Studio March 19-24 To Record

I'm going to post the entire press release for the latest Naked Raygun news. Their albums Basement Screams and Throb Throb are two of my favorites. They stand the test of time as classic albums, nevermind the punk rock gold standard.

Unedited press release:
Naked Raygun To Enter Studio March 19-24 To Record
Material for Their Latest 7” Series on Riot Fest Records;
Music Video On The Way; European Tour This Summer

“Chicago has never produced a better rock band than Naked Raygun…” Greg Kot, Chicago Tribune

Legendary Chicago punk rockers Naked Raygun are going into Transient Sound Studios March 19th to record a slew of songs for release on their 7” Series in 2010. The first 7” (their first recordings in 20 years) sold out in record time and the 2nd in the series will be released on vinyl and digitally on June 15th. They’ll also be filming a video for one of the new songs – look for it to arrive later this year. In late summer, Raygun descends on Europe and the UK -- details will be announced shortly.

Easily the most influential band bursting forth from the initial Chicago punk rock explosion, Naked Raygun also holds the distinction of being the longest running. When many of their peers were either breaking up or going metal in the mid-to-late 1980s, Naked Raygun soldiered on with their trademark sound, combining infectious vocal melodies with muscular guitar and a precision rhythm section. Echoes of the golden era of Raygun sound can be heard in punk rock circles worldwide.

The band broke up in 1992 and save for a one-off reunion in 1997 to celebrate the release of the Last of the Demohicans collection, stayed inactive while band members tended to family business and occasionally other musical projects such as The Bomb and Pegboy.

In the fall of 2006 drummer Eric Spicer began to get the itch to play the old songs again and gathered the guys together again to reunite for Riot Fest in Chicago. The overwhelming response from the sold out crowd of four thousand prompted Naked Raygun to re-form permanently with their final lineup of Spicer, Bill Stephens on guitar, Pierre Kezdy on bass and Jeff Pezzati on vocals.

Naked Raygun returned to action by playing shows across the Midwest and embarking on their first West Coast tour in over a decade with Bay Area legends the Swingin' Utters. The band also released their first DVD via Riot Fest Records, entitled "What Poor Gods We Do Make." The CD/DVD package combined a documentary covering the lifespan of the band with performances from their sold out performance at Riot Fest 2006.

During a recent two night stand at the House of Blues in Chicago, Naked Raygun debuted their first new songs in seventeen years. Met with a reaction of surprise and elation from the slam dancing crowd, both songs embody the classic "Chicago Sound" that Naked Raygun first defined more than twenty years ago.
