Free Polyvinyl Compilation Don't Mind Control

Don't Mind Control

Earlier this year, Cap'n Jazz played a surprise four-song reunion set at the Don't Mind Control Variety Show. Hosted at Chicago's Empty Bottle, the event was a sold-out, one-time gathering of the Joan of Arc family tree that featured nearly 30 musicians who have performed with the band during its 15+ years in existence.

A soundboard recording was made of this unique show and Polyvinyl is pleased to make it available as a free 24 song, 320kbps MP3 download!

Praise for Don't Mind Control Artists

"...(Disappears') Lux holds up listen after listen, standing tall where so many other records that invite the same analysis wilt." - Dusted

"This new one (Bird Show Band) is a blast: it's playful in an almost daemonic way, playful the way only analogue synthesisers can be, and reminds me of the analytical fun that characterised Matmos's synth odyssey Supreme Balloon a few years
ago." - The Quietus

Rules To Rock By / Deerhoof Cover LiLiPUT’s “Hitch Hike”

Rules To Rock By

Press release information:
Rules to Rock By is a new book by author and musician Josh Farrar for young adults about fictional teen band The Bungles who’s founder Annabelle Cabrera is inspired by the very real band Deerhoof (who also make a fictional cameo at the beginning of the book!). This incredible story encourages kids to pursue music, and is accompanied by an equally amazing soundtrack with contributions by talented teen and adult musicians. It includes a cover of Swedish band LiLiPUT’s track “Hitch Hike” by Deerhoof who were happy to participate and support kids in pursuing music. Other tracks off the soundtrack feature the book’s fictional band The Bungles, performing covers and original tracks by real teen band Blame the Patient, described by The New York Times as “effective miners of late-’80s and early-’90s indie rock with a ferocious lead guitarist, Hunter Lombard, and a kinetic lead singer, Sofie Kapur.”

When Halou came to an end after a US tour with indie legend Bob Mould, they regrouped quickly and launched their new project, Stripmall Architecture.

Belly recorded on Sire/Reprise Records and 4AD Records; Donelly's solo works have been released on Warner Brothers and 4AD. Concrete Blonde got their start when founding members Johnette Napolitano and James Mankey met working as backup for Leon Russell. They formed Dream 6 and signed with IRS Records, where labelmate Michael Stipe of R.E.M. suggested they change their name to Concrete Blonde.

Because record labels like EMI remain clueless and disallow embedding, here is something that isn't the video for "Joey" that might make you want to buy the album:

and "Bloodletting"

The Secret History / You Must Buy This Album

The Secret History recently released the album The World That Never Was, and I was extremely impressed. Fans of The Smiths might like them. M83 fans should check them out for sure. In fact, I'll be general and say that fans of "alternative" music from the '80s will like them. The record didn't leave my player for weeks. It's a modern day classic - TRUST.

Here's a live version of "Johnny Nightmare"

Jon Spencer Blues Explosion Reissues

May 18 will see the release of two classic Jon Spencer Blues Explosion albums on CD. The live album Controversial Negro, previously available as a promotional LP, is remastered and expanded to 29 tracks; and the remastered Now I Got Worry in its gatefold sleeve, doubles the original running time with 32 tracks. Both titles come with artwork and an essay along with original liner notes.

Buy them. Seriously. This is one of the greatest rocknroll bands of all time.

"Wail" from "Now I Got Worry"

The title Controversial Negro was taken from the Public Enemy song “Burn Hollywood Burn.”

Free Amanda Palmer, Actually She's Free and Celebrating

You may donate money to download the new Amanda Palmer song "The Truth" or pay nothing.

Do You Swear To Tell The Truth The Whole Truth And Nothing But The Truth So Help Your Black Ass by Amanda Palmer

From Amanda Palmer's blog:
FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST (Dear Roadrunner Records…)

dear The World,

i am very happy to announce today that i have finally been released from my contract with roadrunner records.

as many of you know, i’ve been fighting very, very hard to get off the label for the better part of two years.
for the past seven years, anything i have written and recorded (solo or with my band, The Dresden Dolls) has technically been owned and under the ultimate control of the label, but no longer.
after endless legal bullshit, it’s over, i’ve been DROPPED, RELEASED, LET GO, whatever you wanna call it. in other words: i am FREE AT LAST!!!!!! RAAHH!!

as many of you know, i’ve been a very vocal advocate of artists being fearless in asking their audience and supporters for direct financial help.
i come from a background of grassroots theater and street performance, and i think that artists should feel no shame while passing the hat around once they’ve entertained a crowd of people.
it’s been a huge and obvious irony that i have been legally unable to ask for money for my music, since it’s been verboten by my contract with roadrunner.

now that i’m unshackled, i plan on doing a lot of really awesome and creative things with my songs and how people can pay for them - or, better yet, donate - now that i have control over my stuff.

a lot of people have asked me if i have any regrets about signing with a major label. the answer: no.
below you will find a goodbye letter i have written to roadrunner.

for right now & in celebration of this great event, i am very pleased to be able to - for the first time since the year 2003 - offer you this track from my house to yours….legally and free of charge.
if you should feel inclined to “donate” more than the bare minimum (ZERO/FREE), you can do that too.
even if you only donate a symbolic dollar, i’ll see every single cent of it (after paypal transaction fees, of course).

i wrote this song a few months ago, and didn’t know it would be used for this purpose, but it’s pretty perfect.
nobody had heard it up until a few days ago except for neil gaiman (my man) and tom dickins (my dear australian friend)…i played it for them in my house right after i wrote it.
they liked it, so i’m gonna give it to you…BECAUSE I CAN. (can you visualize me doing my happy crack dance as i write this??)

last friday, i booked an afternoon in my friend owen’s cambridge recording studio and recorded it with the help of my friends jason webley (who’s in town for our upcoming EVELYN EVELYN tour) on guitar and my friend sam kulik (who had unwittingly texted that morning to see if we wanted lunch. we asked him to come over and play trombone. he did! sam rocks.)

this whole exercise may not seem like a big deal to you (artists put up music for free all the time), but for years i have not legally been allowed to put a song on a website and say: I JUST DID THIS, GO DOWNLOAD IT. it’s been illegal. i am so happy i can finally make music and just GIVE IT AWAY.
