In anticipation of the 2020 presidential election, All In: The Fight for Democracy examines the often overlooked, yet insidious issue of voter suppression in the United States. The film interweaves personal experiences with current activism and historical insight to expose a problem that has corrupted our democracy from the very beginning. With the perspective and expertise of Stacey Abrams, the former Minority Leader of the Georgia House of Representatives, the documentary offers an insider’s look into laws and barriers to voting that most people don’t even know are threats to their basic rights as citizens of the United States.

“Voting is fundamental for our country and democracy, and should be accessible and available to Americans everywhere. Today All In: The Fight for Democracy will be accessible on multiple platforms in support of voter awareness and registration for all Americans,” said Abrams.

Film The Glorias Based On Gloria Steinem's Autobiography

The Glorias May Be an Important Pre Election Film for undecided women voters. At the very least it looks to be an informative vehicle for those who know little about the women's movement or Gloria Steinam. So phone the kiddies and anyone else you think might benefit from seeing this one. The film is written and directed by Julie Taymor and stars Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Bette Midler, and Janelle Monáe. It's awesome to see women (Sarah Ruhl and Taymor) writing, directing and starring in a film. The Glorias includes a number of amazing women who made profound contributions to the women’s movement, including Dorothy Pitman Hughes (Janelle Monáe), Flo Kennedy (Lorraine Toussaint), Bella Abzug (Bette Midler), Dolores Huerta (Monica Sanchez) and Wilma Mankiller (Kimberly Guerrero). Let's hope it's a huge success.

Directed by Julie Taymor
Written by Julie Taymor and Sarah Ruhl
Based on the book ‘My Life on the Road’ by Gloria Steinem
Starring Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Bette Midler, Janelle Monáe, Lorraine Toussaint, Lulu Wilson, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kimberly Guerrero

Journalist, fighter, and feminist Gloria Steinem is an indelible icon known for her world-shaping activism, guidance of the revolutionary women’s movement, and writing that has impacted generations. In this nontraditional biopic, Julie Taymor crafts a complex tapestry of one of the most inspirational and legendary figures of modern history, based on Steinem’s own biographical book ‘My Life on the Road.’ THE GLORIAS (Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Lulu Wilson, Ryan Keira Armstrong) traces Steinem’s influential journey to prominence—from her time in India as a young woman, to the founding of Ms. magazine in New York, to her role in the rise of the women’s rights movement in the 1960s, to the historic 1977 National Women’s Conference and beyond.

The Sound of Metal

Darius Marder's film The Sound of Metal Deals With Hearing Impairment and the Effect Upon the Life of a Musician

Directed by Darius Marder
Written by Darius Marder, Abraham Marder
Starring Riz Ahmed, Olivia Cooke, Paul Raci, Lauren Ridloff, Shaheem Sanchez, Chelsea Lee, Jeremy Stone and Mathieu Amalric

During a series of adrenaline-fueled one-night gigs, itinerant punk-metal drummer Ruben (Riz Ahmed) begins to experience intermittent hearing loss. When a specialist tells him his condition will rapidly worsen, he thinks his music career — and with it his life — is over. His bandmate and girlfriend Lou (Olivia Cooke) checks the recovering heroin addict into a secluded sober house for the deaf in hopes it will prevent a relapse and help him learn to adapt to his new situation. But after being welcomed into a community that accepts him just as he is, Ruben has to choose between his equilibrium and the drive to reclaim the life he once knew. Utilizing startling, innovative sound design techniques, director Darius Marder takes audiences inside Ruben’s experience to vividly recreate his journey into a rarely examined world.

Pine Barons Release New Single "Little Spain"

Pine Barons Have Released Their New Single "Little Spain" from their forthcoming LP Mirage on  the Meadow.

Listen to Pine Barons "Little Spain here.

Pine Barons share "Little Spain," the third single released from their upcoming album, Mirage On The Meadow, out October 9th on Grind Select. Frontman Keith Abrams explains his process for writing the lyrics, "At the time, I was doing a lot of lyrical experiments like dada, language translations, and rorschach-like picture slideshows. I was skimming through some poetry books to get myself into a lyrical mindset, when after reading Sylvia Plath's "Lady Lazarus" I was then led to Ted Hughes’ "To Paint A Water Lily" and so, because the two poets had been married in real life, it led me to the idea of marrying their poems by cutting out each of the words from the pages of the two poems and scattering them on the floor — at first just picking out words without thinking and assembling them at random, then, as it always goes with dada, it starts making complete sense and a subconscious idea begins to crystalize in the chaos.”

Pledge 46 To Elect Biden Includes Bright Eyes, My Morning Jacket and More

Pledge 46 is working to increase civic engagement between musicians and fans with a creative new campaign to elect Joe Biden the 46th President of the United States on November 3rd. The online sweepstakes – powered by Propeller – sees an array of top stars and extraordinary artists offering up one-of-a-kind prizes to fans pledging to vote for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the upcoming election. Participating artists include Bon Iver, Jason Isbell, My Morning Jacket, Sylvan Esso, Nathaniel Rateliff, The Head And The Heart, Dessa, X Ambassadors, Social House, Lissie, Lawrence, Bright Eyes, Dashboard Confessional, Hippo Campus, Angel Olsen, Silversun Pickups, Trampled By Turtles, Wye Oak, and Zola Jesus, to name but a few.

PLEDGE to vote.
Founded by music industry veterans Kyle Frenette and Chris Moon, Pledge 46 began as 46 For 46, an ambitious and proudly partisan project designed to stage 46 concerts in 46 cities to help elect the 46th president. The COVID pandemic forced a pivot to a more virtual approach represented by the new Pledge 46 online sweepstakes. The response from artists has been nothing less than remarkable, with each offering rare and exclusive prizes while also using their own unique platforms to support the campaign. Among the prizes available through the Pledge 46 online sweepstakes are a virtual guitar lesson with Jason Isbell, an all-expenses-paid trip to see Bon Iver live in Sydney, Australia, a signed test pressing of My Morning Jacket’s latest album, a special vinyl package from The Head And The Heart, and much more.

Fans enter each unique sweepstakes by simply pledging to vote. Once that pledge is made, they are prompted to register or check their registration in their state, look up their polling place location, or preview a sample ballot for their voting district. From there, fans are encouraged to perform additional political actions to increase the Biden-Harris ticket’s chances of winning, from donating to canvassing to volunteering.

Since launching its first campaign in July, Pledge 46 has seen more than 14,000 music fans pledge to vote. In addition, Pledge 46 has raised $28,000 through its PAC with 750 fans signing up to volunteer with Swing Left.

Jake Luppen Releases Two New Songs From New Album Lupin

Jake Luppen (Hippo Campus) has released two new songs (and videos) from his upcoming  album Lupin. The album was produced by BJ Burton (Bon Iver, Low, Charli XCX) and features synth programming from Jim-E Stack and Buddy Ross. Both"Vampire" and "Murderer" were directed by frequent Bon Iver collaborator Aaron Anderson.

Pre-save/Pre-order Lupin LP, out 10/9 on Grand Jury Music here.

"With this record I wanted to get to the point, and say how things were, as opposed to dancing around them.”
- Jake Luppen

“Vampire” speaks to Jake's experience when he was told about a lump in his brain. Luppen explained, "I was fully under the impression that I was dying when I wrote this – I had gotten a CT scan a couple weeks before that revealed a mass in my brain, which led me to believe that I had brain cancer or some form of Parkinson's. When you’re reminded of your morality there’s a recklessness that creeps up. I found myself willfully doing things I knew I would end up regretting.”

And “Murder” deals with a death of a different sort. Luppin elaborates, “I had been living alone in a house that I used to share with my ex, so the lyrics were inspired by all of the things she left behind. One day I literally packed everything that reminded me of our relationship into boxes and shoved them in my closet. It felt like a funeral."

He felt the album gave him permission to stretch out a bit personally and to try things he hadn't tried within the context of a band. He explains,“I spent a lot of time thinking I had to hide behind other people or other things, but I realized, ‘No, I’m fully capable of doing this myself, I’m fully capable of having this vision.” Luppen explains. “I didn’t think that I was but no, there was this whole other part of myself I’d been stowing away out of fear this entire time.”

Jeff Pezzati

Jeff P

I spent many a sweaty exciting teen night not realizing how freaking lucky I was to get to see Naked Raygun perform live multiple times. It doesn’t get much better than that. Maybe it doesn’t get better than that period. The energy and passion and quality of songs are arguably among the best punk songs ever recorded. Oh and side note: Jenny Schlake I’d like my original vinyl of Basement Screams back please.

Naked Raygun frontman Jeff Pezzati has announced plans to release his first solo EP on May 19th*. Titled The First EP, it contains five tunes he has played for friends over the years but never felt it was the right time to release, until now. It kicks off with “Make Me Whole”, an epic, orchestral 6 and a 1/2 minutes, followed by the purposely lo-fi song “It’s Late,” which shines with vulnerability. The melodic, anthemic “Chromatic Song” employs his pop sensibilities, paving the way for “Ipcress File”, a paean to the mid-60s Michael Caine spy flick. The EP closes with “Who Killed Retro Girl”, which Pezzati was inspired to write after reading the graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming.

* No label info was included in the PR.

New Paul Weller On Sunset & Village

LISTEN TO "VILLAGE" HEREhttps://PaulWeller.lnk.to/VillagetPRPaul Weller releases his gorgeous new song “Village” today, May 7th. "Village" is the second new track to be debuted from his hotly-anticipated new album On Sunset, which is scheduled to be released on June 19th (Verve Forecast).

"And there's a guy who says, fuck all that, I've got heaven around me." keyboards.

New Lickerish Quartet

Here’s the New Lyric Video For “Fadoodle” by the Lickerish Quartet.
It’s from their upcoming album Threesome available May 15. Remember to head over to shop.bandwear.com / Label Logic to place those orders! Discerning music fans will recognize similarities in both production and songwriting to iconic 90s Powerpop masters Jellyfish. Spilt Milk touring member Eric Dover and album musician Tim Smith have begun their own legacy with original member Roger Joseph Manning Jr. and formed the Lickerish Quartet. Some may say this is a bad time for an album release, but I say we couldn’t need these songs more than we do right now.

New Solo Alison Mosshart

Alison Mosshart Solo Release

For Mosshart, releasing music under her name is a new experience but an entirely thrilling one. It makes sense: Mosshart has been compiling a bank of unreleased music for more than a decade now. Back in 2013, Mosshart first wrote the initial sketch of “Rise,” which finds the singer intoning, “When the sky is falling/ and the sun is black/when the sky is coming down on ya/baby don’t look back/we will rise.” Recalls Mosshart: “I didn’t ever forget it. I remember right where I was when I wrote it, sitting at my desk in London, missing someone badly.” When the Sacred Lies team then sought out her skills for a signature song, she knew “Rise” had the right kind of vibe. “Rise” was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Lawrence Rothman.

Mosshart is currently hunkered down at her Nashville home and has used this period of social isolation to teach herself video editing, pulling together some of her favorite footage from a recent visit to Los Angeles and editing it into a video for the song.

Watch the new video here.

New Ty Segall & Mikal Cronin 7” EP 5/2020

Ty Segall & Mikal CroninPop Song 7" EPGoodbye Boozy RecordsRelease: May 1 2020
I heard a rumor this is being reissued.

The PR:
Another week from Italy's always dependable Goodbye Boozyimprint. Like a spiritual cousin from across the Atlantic, GB's sound runs the gamut from lilliputian folk to scuzzy garage rock to full-on psych freak-outs and every nook and cranny in-between. with a release from the dynamic duo of Ty Segall Mikal Cronin, “Pop Song” b/w “So I Went to Beach, Melody” & “Kit Carson”.

Ty as the man of a thousand bands, as he seemingly works with everyone on the West Coast and Mikal is no slouch himself, working with at least 4-5 bands we can think of off the top of our head. The most casual of this release batch, the three tunes here are all economical, hook-laden surf-garage-pop that Jonathan Richmond or The Clean would be proud to call their own.

Although hardly original, garage rock as a genre gets slammed with the accusation that it’s too imitative of someone or something else, another era that’s come and gone, whether it be the likes of Iggy and the Stooges or The Animals. Really, anyone who’s channeled aggression through a reverb pedal and thrashing drums.

Yet unlike their distant cousins hardcore and ‘70s punk, Cronin and Segall’s refurbished garage jams are neither brooding nor predatory. Stunningly raw — fresh, even — Pop Song prowls at the unsuspecting ear instead of tearing at flesh. Dual jaws take ahold of skin, sure, but with smirks that can only belong to two sleepy thirty-somethings changing the disgruntled face of garage rock.

What Do I Think?

Freaking fabulous! The first song “Pop Song” is  raucous quick catchy in and out garage groove performed with punk panache. “So I Went to the Beach, Melody” is right up my alley - full of tambourine attitude and noise. Lastly “Kit Carson” begins with 10 seconds of a familiar melody I’m surei know from the Horror film or tv genre and 50 seconds of primal screaming. It seems perfect for a jarring palette cleanser on a DHS night or your next mix cd. If people still do that. Is the EP worth buying? I say yes!
