Drive - Live at the Olympia in Dublin

Live At The Olympia (Warner Bros.)
Release Date: October 27, 2009

R.E.M. Live At The Olympia is a two-CD set featuring 39 songs from their acclaimed 2007 working rehearsals in Dublin, Ireland. R.E.M. set up camp at the venerable Olympia Theatre in Ireland's capital city and tested new material over five nights before passionate, capacity crowds. This live album was produced by Dublin native Jacknife Lee who, along with R.E.M., co-produced Accelerate, the album which emerged from these shows. Live At The Olympia gives fans an opportunity to hear those songs at their earliest stages of development. In addition to the new material, the band also served up twenty-nine other songs, spanning their entire career, all of which can be found on this album.

A special edition 2 CD &DVD set will contain a film of the Dublin shows by Vincent Moon and Jeremiah, who previously worked with R.E.M. on Ninetynights, Six Days and the "Supernatural Superserious" video.

Oasis Have (Definitely, Maybe) Officially Split

Noel Gallagher, (you know, the more talented jackass brother) of the band Oasis, has left the band. He write on the blog at, "The details are not important and of too great a number to list." He went on to thank the band's fans. HE further added, "I feel you have the right to know that the level of verbal and violent intimidation towards me, my family, friends and comrades has become intolerable. And the lack of support and understanding from my management and bandmates has left me with no other option than to get me cape and seek pastures new."

The upcoming tour dates are obviously canceled. Regarding fans with tickets to those shows, Gallagher wrote, "Apologies are probably not enough, I know, but I'm afraid it's all I've got." According to a band spokesperson, the band will decide whether to continue on as a band and plan to make an announcement with regards to the future of Oasis. However, since Noel was the lead guitarist and chief songwriter, that would seem inappropriate at best. The Gallagher brothers have had some public (and non public) spats in the past, but it seems that whatever happened this time really put a bee in Noel's bonnet. Has anyone thought of compiling a "greatest hits" of their hissy fits and rants? I would buy that. Is this all a stunt? Is this to promote possible solo albums? Is this to garner excitement for another Oasis album? Time will tell.

Thanks for the music, (well two albums worth anyway), and thanks for your appreciation of Paul Weller. Noel will likely continue making music, and Liam will continue to make men's clothing with an appreciation for the mod aesthetic. click here

Michael and Michael Have Issues, But I Love Them / Stella, MIchael Ian Black, Michael Showalter, David Wain News

Could I have made the title longer? Yes, actually I could have. I could have gone all Fiona Apple on your ass. My powers of lameness are beyond your understanding.

Stella: Live In Boston is being released on dvd September 15. Below is the press release for a new dvd w/ Michael Showalter, Michael Ian Black, and David Wain, (with my added commentary in bold, because I sometimes pretend I am important and clever).

Michael And Michael And David Too
The comedy collective known as Stella—Michael Ian Black, Michael Showalter and David Wain—had great success with their eponymous weekly series (no they did not - it was canceled before it finished it's run), not to mention Comedy Central’s Michael & Michael Have Issues (please save this show from possible cancellation), MTV’s The State (genius even though it was an MTV show, and finally out on dvd), the online series Wainy Days… The list actually does go on and on for the trio as a group and individually (Let's not forget other great projects like Reno 911, which was just cancelled by the way, and the awesome -and should be on dvd- Viva Variety). They recently took their talents to the stage for Stella: Live In Boston and created what we like to refer to as a side-splitting DVD. (I'm sure that hackneyed phrase pleases these guys no end). The disc includes the full hour performance plus three episodes each of Wainy Days and Michael Showalter Showalter. In stores September 15.

By the way, if you do not own the cds Sandwiches & Cats by Michael Showalter, and I am a Wonderful Man by Michael Ian Black - I highly recommend heading over to Amazon. The purchase price equals guaranteed laughs which are needed in this time of bad news, bad economy, and bad comedians. Nope, I do not make any money by listing, because I haven't bothered to suss how to do that. Plus, I blog for the love people, for the love.

This dvd has given me countless hours o' fun.

Mean Creek Release Album and Announce Tour Dates

Mean Creek will release their second album, The Sky (Or The Underground), October 13, on Old Flame Records. Band member Chris Keene says of the release, "We're very proud of the new album. We put 100% of ourselves into it, exhausting ourselves physically, emotionally, and monetarily. We think that desperate sort of struggle shows through in the songs and makes them more powerful, and we hope people will feel the same way."

The album has been compared to The Replacements, Husker Du, The Pixies, and Mission of Burma - that's pretty ballsy. You can see them on tour in the following cities:

Sept 10 - Crash Mansion - NY, NY
Sept 12 - Boston Arts Festival - Boston, MA
Sept 17 - TT The Bears - Boston, MA
Sept 27 - Central Square - Cambridge, MA
Oct 6 - The Space - Portland, ME
Oct 9 - Piano's - NY, NY
Oct 10 - The Paradise - Boston, MA
"Mean Creek commence a sharp blend of country-core"

The Boston Globe
"And with a clutch of splendid, heart-tugging melodies, Mean Creek, a striking foursome from Boston that opened the night, had a touch of the epic."

Boston Phoenix
“a local folksy, roots-leaning rock four-piece named after the award-winning indie film —
meld sartorially as well as musically...”

Improper Bostonian
"One of the top 10 bands you must hear right now!"

The Boston Herald
"A melodic tour de force"

The Boston Globe
Mean Creek's folksy Simon & Garfunkel harmonies anchor a sound that alternates between jangling and overdriven guitars. This could be the best lineup in Boston."

Nominated for "Outstanding Americana Act Of The Year" by the Boston Music Awards (2008)

Mean Creek have shared the stage with Mew, Buffalo Tom, Margot & The Nuclear So & So's, Bishop Allen, Dead Confederate, Black Lips.

So I was watching t.v. last night and noticed The Kills would be on The Carson Daily show. It was clearly a re-run. Anyway, I decided to watch, and Carson Daily actually said "Months from now people will be thanking me for introducing them to The Kills." This was a 2009 appearance. Yeah, thanks for introducing us to The Kills, you unbelievable douchebag.

The Sliimy Music Tee, personally designed by Sliimy, is a T-shirt that features “album art” on the front, and the Paint Your Face tack listing on the back, reminiscent of traditional album packaging. Official 9 Film Synopsis:
A new era in animated storytelling begins on 9.9.09. Visionary filmmakers Tim
Burton (The Corpse Bride, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory) and Timur Bekmambetov
(Wanted, Nightwatch) join forces to produce wunderkind director Shane Acker's
distinctively original and thrilling tale. 9 stars Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly,
Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer and Crispin Glover and
features the music of Danny Elfman. When 9 (The Lord of the Ring's Elijah Wood)
first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world. All humans
are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others
like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their
extinction. Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that
hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive,
and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place.
As they'll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on

I know this is the record company squeezing every last ounce of money (and dignity) from me, but it's hard not to be excited about this announcement. September 8 four expanded editions of The Stone Roses eponymous album will be released. And this time they've all but provided the lube for us. I have a huge record geek boner right now. This album is fantastic and if you don't own it - please do yourself a favor and indulge.

A Community Curated, Built, & Performed Musico-Art Project: A Colossal Theremin Room
Installation & Workshop: Sept 30th - Oct 4th

Radio frequency oscillators? Variable Capacitors? It's as Sci-Fi as it sounds! The eerie and ethereal tones of early cinematic soundtracks such as those of Spellbound, The Day the Earth Stood Still and The Thing will be brought to life on a collossal scale at this year's Pop Montreal Symposium and Art Pop headquarters:

ESPACE RÉUNION - 6600 Hutchison, north of Beaubien

David Beaulieu and Christian Pelletier, the creators of the portable speaker suit worn by Patrick Watson during the Montreal International Jazz Fest (, envision a room of 16 antennas dispersed to create an interactive symphony of psychedelic sounds played by bodies in movement. This improvised and free-form communal experience is dependent upon the bodies present, but also upon funding from the community at large.

The Pop team and theremin creators have only 30 days to raise the 5000$ required to pay for the equipment, and thanks to, a free, invite-only way to fund ideas and endeavors, they can offer you a range of exclusive prIzes in exchange for your support of this mind-blowing endeavour! In exchange for your support, you may even be eligible for the following rewards:

• an exclusive track from Gentleman Reg or Dishwasher
• a VIP Festival Pass to the Pop Montreal International Music Festival
• a musical about you and 3 of your friends, written and performed by us.
• a custom-made Loudspeaker Suit built byBeaulieu and Pelletier themselves!

The backers pledge deadline is September 21st, so act quick! This project won't happen without you!

Pete Townshend Writing New Musical FLOSS

A message from Pete (via The,

"I am writing a new musical.

FLOSS is an ambitious new project for me, in the style of TOMMY and QUADROPHENIA. In this case the songs are interspersed with surround-sound 'soundscapes' featuring complex sound-effects and musical montages. FLOSS will be a son-et-lumiére musical piece, intended for outdoor performance, or arenas. Several of the more conventional songs from FLOSS will be featured on a forthcoming Who recording for release in 2010. FLOSS will be heard in concert for the first time in 2011, at a venue and date yet to be established. I am already having talks with producers in New York.

The collected music and sound for FLOSS convey the story of a married couple whose relationship gets into difficulty. Walter, a straight-cut pub rock musician, is able to retire when one of his songs becomes the TV anthem of a big car company. He becomes a house-husband while his wife Floss devotes herself to a riding stables and stud. When he tries to return to music after a fifteen year hiatus, he finds that what he hears and what he composes evoke the ecologically rooted, apocalyptic mindset of his generation. Shaken by this and torn by personal difficulties, he and Floss become estranged. A series of dramatic events in a hospital emergency ward bring them both to their senses.

While Roger Daltrey exercises his ageing vocal chords by embarking on a two month USE OR LOSE IT solo tour, my focus is on FLOSS, which touches on the current issues faced by the Boomer generation. It also addresses their uneasy relationship with their parents, children and grandchildren. As a 19 year old – with My Generation – I wrote the most explicitly ageist song in rock. At 64, I now want to take on ageing and mortality, using the powerfully angry context of rock 'n' roll."

Daniel Johnston and Jason Falkner Collaborate / Live Dates

"Everyone needs to take their demos and go back to the studio." Daniel Johnston

Daniel Johnston will release, Is And Always Was, October 6, via his own Eternal Yip Eye Music . He collaborated with Jason Falkner (Jellyfish, Beck, Air, Paul McCartney), who worked his studio trickery to help Johnston achieve his goals. guitar/piano and vocal melodies are backed by Falkner on guitar, bass, and keyboards with help from Joey Waronker (REM, Beck, Smashing Pumpkins) on drums.

Of the experience with Johnston, Falkner says, "He possesses that rare individuality that makes the listener wonder where this music comes from. It was challenging to make our minds work together but I really found myself immersed in his musical world. It's a unique place to live, that's for sure!"

Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band Between My Head And The Sky

Yoko Ono Plastic Ono Band will release Between My Head And The Sky, September 22nd On Chimera Music.

Below you will find the press release info and liner notes' credits:

From Fluxus and performance-art pioneer and Two Virgins to chart-topping dance-music heroine (inspiring punk rock along the way!), Yoko Ono has been an innovative and influential force on music and art, while simultaneously campaigning for peace on the world's stage. At 76 years young, Yoko continues to kick ass -- and is preparing to release BETWEEN MY HEAD AND THE SKY, a career-defining album made with her new Plastic Ono Band. The record is a gorgeous, mind-melting blend of styles, restating and sharpening themes while plunging into the always-mysterious future.

The sessions happened at NYC’s Sear Sound, the same studio that used to house the old Hit Factory, where Double Fantasy was recorded. Sean Lennon both produced with Yoko and acted as musical leader for a group evenly divided between Japanese avant pop musicians, and downtown Manhattan improvisers. In the Japanese contingent is Yuka Honda of Cibo Matto, plus the current group led by Keigo “Cornelius” Oyamada, which includes Yuko Araki and Hirotaka Shimmy Shimizu. Cornelius and Ms. Ono performed together in Tokyo in January, and Yoko was so happy with the result she invited them over to record. In the Manhattan improv camp we find Shahzad Ismaily (guitar, bass, percussion), Erik Friedlander(cello), Michael Leonhart (trumpet, vibes), Daniel Carter (reeds) and Indigo Street (guitar) -- a singularly gifted group of instrumentalists.

As Sean says, “Yoko unleashed a deluge of new songs, writing about 16 songs in six days. The most prolific day peaking out at six songs written and tracked in an afternoon. The recording session was like a tornado of inspiration. Some of the best lyrics on the record Yoko actually 'freestyled' as if she were a lyrical divining rod.”

The results are amazing. The opening track, “Waiting for the D Train” is a raw, gorgeous rocker in the classic Plastic Ono Band style, with orgone guitar bursts opening the way for a wild cascade of vocals. The following track, “The Sun Is Down!” is a softly charming cord of electronic pulse-glimmers intertwined with casually ecstatic vocal inventions. The third track, “Ask the Elephant!” has the feel of a dark, smoky room, late at night, with the musicians holding the edges of an avant groove while Yoko improvises over them. BETWEEN MY HEAD AND THE SKY fluctuates between these styes, and variations thereon, in a very organic way, adding pieces and removing them with a master artist’s logic.

The lyrically elegiac feel suffusing this album is especially evident on the last three songs – “Unun. To,” “I’m Going Away Smiling” and “Higa Noboru” – two of which are sung partly in Japanese. But Ms. Ono takes a variety of textual approaches, and they are brilliantly matched by the ensemble. While each of Yoko’s individual stylestreams will have its proponents, it’s hard to imagine a more beautifully balanced collection of work by one of contemporary culture's reigning geniuses.

Yoko Ono. BETWEEN MY HEAD AND THE SKY. Hold that thought.

YOKO ONO is a force of nature. She is also one of the most important and enduring artists of the last half-century. Her physical trajectory took her from Japan in the 1940s to America in the ‘50s and ‘60s. There was a momentary return to her homeland in the early ‘60s, then back to America (specifically New York City). After that, there’s her mid ‘60s visit to London, where she met John Lennon, and all that transpired henceforth -- famous and infamous. Hers is a spectacular timeline through the counterculture of the late 20th century.

The celebrated flash notes of her life with Lennon have been obsessively documented and analyzed. Yoko’s own, autonomous history as an academic, musician, artist, filmmaker and a radical innovator in all of these fields has been perennially overshadowed in mainstream journals. It has only been within the last decade that serious consideration of Yoko’s work by above-ground culturistas has even been considered. But it remains a subject that most media-types approach with mincing trepidation and uncomfortable jokes.

When the fantastic Yes Yoko Ono exhibition (and its amazing catalogue, published by Harry N. Abrams) was realized at Japan Society in New York in 2000, art critic Michael Kimmelman reviewed it succinctly in the New York Times (October 27, 2000), detailing Yoko’s rich art lineage. He noted how Yoko established, alongside La Monte Young, the first real artist’s loft, where music and performance were united with the shock of art-as-action. This was where Yoko created works such as “Smoke Piece,” where the audience was asked to burn the art and the self-explanatory “Painting To Be Stepped On.”

Yoko’s loft is where the iconoclast George Maciunas -- a formidable outsider force in his own right, who ran the AG Gallery uptown -– first became entranced by Buddhist positivity with its smiling, gentle nature. This was an element Maciunas immediately grabbed and threw into the berserk counterculture soupcon he christened, Fluxus. If there’s anything that prefigures punk rock it’s Maciunas, Yoko and the Fluxus movement.

Interestingly, Kimmelman blows his cover as one art critic who might fully grasp Yoko’s genius, by denouncing her musical activities. He proclaims her visual art, in retrospect, to be underappreciated. He posits her marriage to Lennon was a leap into celebrity, but one to which she absolutely brought an awareness of celebrity-as-performance. He even opines that her films are her greatest achievements (alongside her brilliant, pre-feminist performance masterwork, “Cut Piece”). But he negates these opinions by tossing out a dismissive kneejerk comment about her music, one whose idiocy is not mitigated by its wide currency. “The music is unbearable,” he writes. “And let's leave it at that”.

An art critic without the ability to assess musical art with the same aesthetic consciousness he applies to visual art is, to some degree, crippled. But Kimmelman’s myopia is not confined to the compartmentalized world of conventional art critics. There has been a general idea bruited about that Yoko Ono’s art, particularly in its musical form, is not worth much or is some kind of cruel joke being played on the public. This idea is so foreign to our ears that it’s almost ungraspable.

Yoko’s music and her visuals have always been stunning, and not easily separable. Yoko Ono as musician, as composer, inhabits personae explicitly integral to her life and career as an artist. The ideas and sounds that run throughout her compositions are as filled with wonder and humor and ingenuity as her most engaging work in film, object art, et al. Indeed, her vocal concepts, inside the context of Beatles recordings -- the highest profile pop music recordings in history -- are astounding, not only for their organic thought-tongue individuality, but also for their ability to deliver genuinely avant-garde statements to a mainstream world.

The fact that this person is female, Japanese, an artist, and was married to John Lennon is something people are still trying to figure out. For many, it’s just a weird bit of proof that there’s a world out there (somewhere) far more fascinating than Main Street. But Yoko’s music is still regarded by the straight press and the bulk of its adherents as an anomaly, some sort of eccentric affectation. The truth is that Yoko studied and practiced traditional composition in the 1950s, while simultaneously exploring ideas of alternative notational theory. This places her right in the same class as such acknowledged transitional thinkers as John Cage, Henry Cowell, and David Tudor. Yoko’s compositional work, perhaps especially the “instruction pieces,” and her sharp-edged performances, were profound by any measure. When you factor in her ethnicity and gender, it’s easy to believe her efforts were more functionally radical than those of any contemporaries. In the context of her partnership with John Lennon, we got to experience a premier avant garde artist’s attempt to unify her own process with a rock n’ roll dynamic. Which, alongside the art/music relationship of Andy Warhol and The Velvet Underground and the influence these mutually beneficial connectives have had on the modern state of art/rock, is pretty goddamn revolutionary.

Since her first commercially released recording – Two Virgins – created in partnership with John Lennon, Yoko has breathed life into a brilliant body of musical work. Initially, this fact was only grasped by listeners at the fringes – proto-punks, improvisers and experiementalists of various stripes – but the last decade has finally seen the beginnings of a serious re-evaluation of her oeuvre. And whilst the wilder parts of her whole seem to still be beyond the grasp of squares, her 2007 album, Yes, I’m a Witch, on which she was joined by a who’s who of the international rock underground, show that many people have figured out the secret beauty of her moves. This graceful arc continues with Between Her Head and the Sky.

Canadian Pop Chanteuse Jenn Grant

Jenn Grant will have a full length release, Echoes, on on Six Shooter Records "this fall".

Press release:
Echoes was recorded and mixed with a full analog process at The Studio at Puck’s Farm in Schomberg, Ontario – a location which is a throwback to a quieter, more simplistic time much like the three-stoplight town it is located in. Grant and her band - Goldsmith, Kinley Dowling (violin), David Christenson (bass clarinet), Sean MacGillivray (bass), and Gary Craig (drums/percussion) – utilized the tranquil setting of the studio to craft the 11 tracks featured on the record. The warm yet rustic sounds of the album are perfectly complimented by Grant’s vocals and the result is a collection of sincere and personal songs filled with heartbreak, love and a touch of whimsy.

Grant first burst onto the Canadian music scene in 2007 with her debut full-length Orchestra for the Moon on which she collaborated with talented musicians Ron Sexsmith and Matt Mays. The album earned her four-star reviews in Harp and The Globe and Mail (Canada’s largest-circulation national newspaper) among others, and the Toronto Star called the release a “critical smash”. It wasn’t long before Grant found herself quickly climbing the indie-pop ranks to tour and share the stage with musical peers The Weakerthans, Great Lake Swimmers, and Hayden.

More About The Upcoming R.E.M. and a New Video "Living Well Is The Best Revenge"

"Living Well Is The Best Revenge" (shot by Vincent Moon and Jeremiah).
Living Well Is The Best Revenge

This embed will be updated weekly:

The press release:
R.E.M. will release a brand-new double live album, entitled R.E.M. Live At The Olympia on October 27th, 2009 via Warner Bros. Records. The two-CD set, produced by Jacknife Lee, features 39 songs that capture the best moments from the band’s 2007 “working rehearsals” at Dublin’s fabled Olympia club where singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, and bassist Mike Mills tested out new songs for R.E.M.’s 2008 studio album Accelerate.

The material was tested were five nights before fired-up, capacity crowds comprised of fan-club members, friends, family, and fans from all over the world who were privy to R.E.M.'s so-called “experiment in terror,” as guitarist Peter Buck puts it. “We were just trying to do something we hadn't done before," Buck says, "which meant there was no relaxing during the set. Every second we were playing something we didn't know all that well. Which was kind of good — there were all kinds of terror elements going on during that show."

Big Star Are Heaven In Your Ears

Here is a press release from Rhino about the upcoming box set. I've been listening to it, and it's everything a fan could want, and everything someone who doesn't own anything by the band needs (but doesn't know it yet).

Keep An Eye On The Sky
4-Disc Boxed Set with 98 Tracks Spanning 1968-1975

Release Date: 9/15/09

Big Star's trek from obscure Memphis band to standard bearers for an entire genre of music has never been fully mapped - until now. Rhino presents the definitive look at the power-pop band with a 4-disc boxed set divided between key cuts from Big Star's three studio albums and a treasure trove of unreleased demos, unused mixes, alternate versions of songs, and a 1973 concert recorded in Memphis.

In these 98 tracks you can hear what turned artists as diverse as Cheap Trick, R.E.M., and The Replacements into Big Star fans.

The deluxe packaging for KEEP AN EYE ON THE SKY includes extensive liner notes, rare and never-before-seen photos, and insightful essays about the cult of Big Star and the band's history.

Michael Moore Capitalism: A Love Story

The new Michael Moore film, Capitalism: A Love Sotry, will be in theters October 2.

"It's a crime story. But it's also a war story about class warfare. And a vampire movie, with the upper 1 percent feeding off the rest of us. And, of course, it's also a love story. Only it's about an abusive relationship. It's not about an individual, like Roger Smith, or a corporation, or even an issue, like health care. This is the big enchilada. This is about the thing that dominates all our lives — the economy. I made this movie as if it was going to be the last movie I was allowed to make. It's a comedy."
— Michael Moore

What "they're" saying:
The same kind of Seattle Band that takes you on with their dirty fast and
dangerous rock-n-roll. They've made Iggy Pop stop and take notice.

...similarly primed for success... there's no containing the primal, giddy energy that crackles through it...
It's innocent and raunchy, wide-eyed and tunnel-visioned, all at once.

Soak the Kinks in cheap booze, reignite the Stooges' strut and add some
modern Strokes of ambition, and you have the Blakes
