Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Tiny Desk Concert

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Tiny Desk Concert

Admittedly not a big fan of a lot of current rap (or superfluous use of either the "n word" or "uh" mid flow),  I have to say there are some serious grooves here in this collaborative effort for the Freddie Gibbs and Madlib NPR Tiny Desk Concert.  Leon Michels and members of the (always cool) Dap Kings and El Michels Affair: Marco Benevento, Nick Movshon and Homer Steinweiss largely contribute to my thumbs up opinion.

The Black Madonna Issues Statement Re: Amazon Backed Festival

THE BLACK MADONNA ISSUES STATEMENT REGARDING AMAZON-BACKED FESTIVAL

I will not be performing at Intersect Festival due to their relationship with Amazon Web Services who have business ties with ICE and Homeland Security.
The event proposed to me initially was framed as and arts and technology weekender with other artists I deeply respected and with well known and respected production teams. It presented no cause for concern. I was not approached by employees of Amazon. I was never formally or informally advised of any Amazon branding. The offer I accepted did not propose any kind of brand partnership. I am profoundly disappointed that anyone, at any level, in the long chain of people between the offer I saw and the eventual promotion of this event presumed I would. My contract intentionally prohibits that my name or likeness be connected in any way with any form of sponsorship endorsement of any kind including but not limited to commercial and/or political endorsements, without the prior written agreement of myself.
Clearly, I was shocked and hurt when press and promotional materials appeared with my name on an event presented by AWS yesterday. Many of you expressed your disappointment too and you were right to do so. I share it completely and amplify it.
This issue is not just ideological for me, it is a moral and ethical transgression against my work, my faith and most importantly the people I stand with. As a global ambassador for the Help Refugees organization, I raise awareness and donate 100% of my merchandise sales to refugee assistance and personally provide grants to undocumented families fleeing persecution in their home countries.
I am in total solidarity with the demonstrators, workers, other tech laborers, and immigrants and all people of conscience in calling for and end to corporate digital collaboration with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security.
In our personal and professional lives we all navigate contradictions and unclear lines in a world that makes it very hard to do the right thing. This is especially true in the arts, where independent workers often depend on relationships with brands to pay the bills. I am in a position to say that I will not agree to perform at an AWS branded event. I know that position isn't an option for all artists. Respect to all of you, in any case.
I was looking forward to the show and I am sorry that I won't be able to be with all of you for this one. But we will meet again on a dancefloor soon. And in the meanwhile I encourage each one of you reading this to visit the following organizations and learn more about how you can help people living without documents and seeking asylum and human rights around the world.

Redd Kross Kickstarter Trailer #2

Redd Kross are one of my favorite bands.  They're my favorite band currently recording or touring.  As a major music geek that's (as Bananarama once said), "really saying something." Jeff and Steve McDonald and director Andrew Reich are raising funds to create a Redd Kross documentary. I don't have a pot to piss in but do have a window to throw it from - if you like that sort of thing.  But should you have $10.00 or 100 or more bucks lying around to help make this happen* you should check out the Kickstarter page (here) for the goodies offered for contributors to the cause. There's everything from autographs to your very own backyard concert. The funding period is down to the wire.  Make it happen.  HIT IT!

In 1978, in the Southern California beach suburb of Hawthorne, the
same town that was home to The Beach Boys, two brothers Jeff and Steven
McDonald aged 15 and 11 respectively, started a band called The
Tourists. The first time The Tourists played in front of anyone was at
Black Flag's legendary rehearsal space, The Church in Hermosa Beach. The
older band gave The Tourists not only their seal of approval but a new
name - Red Cross. The spelling was later changed to Redd Kross after the high school-age brothers received a cease and desist order from the International Red Cross. Jeff's response was to change their name to "Redd Kross" in an homage to comedian Redd Foxx.

Born Innocent is directed by Andrew Reich an Emmy Award-winning television comedy writer/showrunner, best known as an Executive Producer on Friends. And the film's producer is Emmy Award winning Julian Cautherley. The documentary has already filmed interviews with Jeff and Steve and Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Buzz Osbourne and Dale Crover (The Melvins) and original Red Cross member Greg Hetson (Bad Religion, Circle Jerks). With the help of the Kickstarter campaign the filmmakers will interview many other musicians and artists influenced by the seminal Redd Kross.

Redd Kross has long been a cult band, a band's band, a secret code word among music fans
that signifies taste and cool. But unlike many cult bands, their music
is eminently accessible. If you like The Beatles or The Ramones or Cheap
Trick, basically if you're a rock and roll fan, you'll like Redd Kross

INTERVIEWS WILL INCLUDE

They already have hours of interviews filmed with Jeff and Steve McDonald.
We have also interviewed Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth) Buzz Osbourne and
Dale Crover (The Melvins) and original Red Cross member Greg Hetson (Bad
Religion, Circle Jerks). With your support we hope to film additional
interviews with most if not all of the following fans of the band and
key figures in the Redd Kross story:
  • Keith Morris (Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Off!)
  • Charlotte Caffey (The Go-Go's)
  • Rodney Bingenheimer (KROQ)
  • Mike Watt (The Minutemen)
  • Chuck Dukowski (Black Flag)
  • Pat Smear (The Germs, Nirvana)
  • Belinda Carlisle (The Go-Go's)
  • Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth)
  • Jonathan Poneman (Sub Pop Records)
  • Mark Arm (Mudhoney)
  • Kim Thayil (Soundgarden)
  • Jeff Ament (Pearl Jam)
  • A.C. Newman (The New Pornographers)
  • Anna Waronker (That Dog)
  • Dave Markey (Director, Desperate Teenage Lovedolls and The Year That Punk Broke)
  • Jordan Schwartz (We Got Power fanzine)
  • John Doe (X)
  • Milo Aukerman (The Descendents)
  • Lee Burger (Burger Records)
  • Anthony Keidis (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
  • Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
  • Mac McCaughan (Superchunk, Merge Records)
  • Raymond Pettibon (artist)
  • Jack White (White Stripes)
  • Gibby Haynes (Butthole Surfers)
  • Steven Malkmus (Pavement)
  • J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr.)
  • Greg Dulli (Afghan Whigs)
  • Mark Lanegan (Screaming Trees)
  • Jack Antonoff (fun.)
  • Ron and Russell Mael (Sparks)
They will also film interviews with current or former Redd Kross
band members: Brian Reitzell, Robert Hecker, Gere Fennelly, Dez Cadena,
Janet Housden, Roy McDonald, Ron Reyes, Jack Irons, Jason Shapiro, and
Dale Crover.

*Update 9/30/2019 The goal has been reached & the film will be made.

Attention Old & Young Punks! Desolation Center Theatrical Trailer

Desolation Center, the indie music festival documentary which has played numerous film festivals worldwide, is set to begin a national theatrical rollout starting on September 13th in Los Angeles. The film
is the untold story of a series of guerrilla music and art performance
happenings in the 80s which inspired the birth of contemporary festival
culture including Burning Man, Lollapalooza and Coachella. The film
combines interviews of punk and post-punk luminaries with rare
performance footage of Sonic Youth, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Perry
Farrell, Redd Kross, Swans,
Einstürzende Neubauten, Survival Research Laboratories, Savage Republic
and more, giving viewers unprecedented access to a time when pushing the
boundaries of music, art, and performance was like an unspoken
obligation. Directed by the creator and organizer of the original
events, Stuart Swezey, Desolation Center tells the true story of how the
risky, and at times even reckless, actions of a few outsiders were able
to incite seismic cultural shifts.

The film explores an almost lost subcultural story that will also be a catalyst
to future generations to question assumptions and carve out new
possibilities to express themselves. As Thurston Moore also described to
the New York Times, the mood was "one of complete joy and
wonder at being together in a place that might as well have been another
planet." He said the most radical attribute of Desolation Center was that "it asked no permission," and he called the show "one of the great moments" in the history of Sonic Youth.

*No DVD date as yet, but prick up your ears in about 6 months.

FEATURES: Sonic Youth, Minutemen, Meat Puppets, Perry Farrell, Redd Kross, Einstürzende Neubauten, Survival Research Laboratories, Savage Republic

"Hundreds of punks hit the desert.... The modern music festival was born. These
anarchic desert happenings didn't last long . . . but now their history
is chronicled in a documentary called Desolation Center." - The New York Times

Trent Harris Rubin and Ed Spinoff

Director Trent Harris Continues Cult Classic Rubin and Ed With New Work Echo People

In case you've not seen Rubin and Ed, it contains one of my all time favorite film quotes, "My cat can eat a whole watermelon."  It stars Howard Hesseman, Crispin Glover and even features the infamous Karen Black. Harris has done two of my favorite films, Rubin and Ed and Beaver Trilogy. Look for clips on youtube and buy the DVDs on his website.

Echo People Episode One

According to director Trent Harris Echo People episode 2 is about a blabbermouth with a speech impediment who loves frogs.  She is sent on a top-secret mission by Mr. Moose.  Her partner on the job is a timid brain surgeon who has no idea what he is doing...ever.  They find some suspicious rubber ants and argue a lot about what a Wagamamis really is.  And there is some stuff about Mars and in this episode we finally find out the true meaning of The PPR!

Trent Harris intends to create more episodes of Echo People to create a whole. I'm thinking of it as his version of the recent David Lynch Twin Peaks reboot. Support him if you can.
Help Mr. Harris Continue His Work Here.

that dog. to Release New Album Old LP October 4th

that dog. to Release New Album Old LP October 4th

that dog. will release their first new album in over twenty years on October 4. The long awaited work titled Old LP will be released by UMe. It was recorded over the last three years in Los Angeles, and features eclectic and impressive guest appearances by Maya Rudolph (SNL, The Rentals), Randy Newman, Graham Coxon (Blur), Josh Klinghoffer (Red Hot Chili Peppers), Charlotte Caffey (The Go-Go's), Tanya Haden (The Haden Sisters), violinist Kaitlin Wolfberg, Andrew Dost (fun.), and husband Steven McDonald (Redd Kross)

The band had a brief reunion in 2011-2012 where they found creative energy from the exuberant reactions of their fans and the joy of playing with one another. They found themselves willing to work together again, but things had changed a lot from their experience as '90s rockers. Maxwell, a New York television executive would visit Los Angeles to collaborate. And L.A. resident Waronker is a kick ass mom and prolific composer who recently collaborated with Craig Wedren (Shudder to Think) on the score for the Aidy Bryant Hulu series Shrill. So considering travel, other projects and life in general, the creation of an entire album was a long process. Waronker explains, "By the end of 2012 we had four songs done." And "In 2013, we had a few more. We needed time to let it grow into what it would become. Sometimes it's hard to get there. Which is kind of the theme of the album."

You may pre-order Old LP here.

I Funking Love Fishbone

Much Love For Fishbone on Tour 2019

Although it's the tale end of the summer tour, I feel the need to mention Fishbone, a band that has given my friends and I many celebratory memories, and maybe even a few personal anecdotes. They’ve also gotten me through many a rough day and had a few of their own. Whether it's silly Ska or salacious Ska, Funkdafied racial politics, raucous Rock, horny horns blasting the good vibes or a melange of all of those plus more, Fishbone are not to be overlooked. Not in the '80s not the '90s and not now. Take a listen.

You try to pin these guys and this song down to a genre!

Pure Positivity Tinged With Pop PLUS At the End They Take Your Ass to Church

Fishbone Ska To Skank To  and Maybe Even Think

So many albums and so many styles, and sometimes all at once. If you're a fan or just like documentaries, check out the film Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone. It's the warts and all tale of a genre busting groundbreaking band with one of music's greatest frontmen. The bands only real failure may have been that they were ahead of their time. And boy did they have some bizarre bad luck at precisely the wrong time. They never achieved the financial success deserved, but they keep on keepin' on throughout the years in varying incarnations with Angelo and (John) Norwood Fisher somehow stoking the embers to keep the flame of Fishbone alive for about 40 years. And many original fans of their truth and soul have been with them all along. And now original members are together on tour with George Clinton/ Parliament! That's an embarrassment of riches. If you’re lucky enough to see them - which you should - thank them for their efforts.

Rebel Rampage Ticket Giveaway / Bonus Fishbone Love

Rebel Rampage Tour in Support of Debut Album Divided We Fall

Remember when Rock and Punk bands used their anger to write songs that spoke about issues that pissed them off? Well, Rebel Rampage proudly carry the tradition of the protest song and the anger and spirit,  if not the sound of bands like The Clash and Rage Against the Machine.  They also put their money where their mouth is on their Midwestern tour as they partner with non profit A Voice For the Innocent to raise awareness and funds for those affected by rape and sexual abuse.

The debut album Divided We Fall features contributions by Emily Armstrong (Dead Sara) and Angelo Moore of Fishbone. If that's not a stamp of approval and reason enough for you to check out this album here or get off the couch and support this band live, well I don't know what better you have going on?!? Having said that, I'm giving away two pairs of free tickets to the Chicago show at Reggie's. FREE TICKETS. Cool right? Just stop by my Facebook page Kaye Telle's Facebook and comment on the post if you want the tickets. It's that simple. No, I'm not looking for followers (don't be cynical).  I'm just trying to get the word out for a band I think deserves a mention. Pay attention to that space in the next few days as I might be able to turn some Hawkeyes onto a ticket or two for the Iowa show at Gabe's.

Notable Quotable:
“Rebel Rampage is on the one, and their brain and informativity is the ammunition for the gun!  Check the music, check the record, check, check the knowledge! – Angelo Moore (A.K.A. Dr. Madd Vibe) of the legendary underappreciated forever genius band Fishbone

Redd Kross To Release Beyond The Door

Merge Records will release the new Redd Kross album Beyond the Door on August 23.

I'm really sorry I slept on this everybody.  It's either flooding or hotter than a - (insert something  really super hot and then add a habanero and a ghost chili salsa) in my computer nook and writing has not been a priority. Miss me?  (::crickets::::crickets::) Although I've not been actively blogging for quite some time - I think Redd Kross definitely deserve a mention.  So I'm back to post some righteous information for you.

Merge Records will release the new Redd Kross album Beyond the Door on August 23.  Steven said this album is the most collaborative Redd Kross album since Born Innocent. My promo email said a bunch of promo person stuff that, although their time is appreciated, is left on the cutting room floor for our purposes. I am sure this album will be nothing less than stellar and likely one of the best albums released in the last 7 years ( when their last album Researching the Blues was released). I'm hoping we can look forward to some great melodies, some truth, a bit of kitsch, and I say in all earnest sincerity - a bit of rocking our collective asses off. The track listing is:
Track/Song Title

The Party
2:09

2:25
Beyond the Door

Redd Kross Mailing List Subscribers or Thisismyhappeningblogspot.com readers who ask me via facebook message receive 10% off at the MERGE online store www.mergerecords.com/beyond-the-doorMerge purchases will ship to arrive on or around the release date August 23 & include FREE SHIPPING within the U.S.

As you may know Redd Kross are one of my favorite bands, but which Redd Kross? Well that's the thing - they have been at different times and sometimes simultaneously Punk, Power Pop, Melodic 60s and 70s harmony influenced and/ or straight up Rock. But for quite some time now they have been providing those who care to pay attention with well crafted - call it whatever you want to call it - music that stands the test of time. Music that made me proud to mount some of their album art among the few pieces I've placed in my home.   Like Kiss, they have an "army" of devoted fans who stick with them through decades, styles, and solo albums (*cough*  better than any Kiss effort *cough*). I personally loved taking their tour of the bubblegum factory on Third Eye as much as their (should have been arena filling) Phaseshifter album and their last release Rehearsing the Blues. What category? Who cares? I can tell you they aren't pan flute. I'm sure I'm going to love Beyond the Door too, and don't mind waiting for quality. I also look forward to seeing them on the road with Melvins and Shit Kid.
As you may know Steven McDonald will be doing double duty as he continues to fool Father Time by bassing (yeah I said bassing) for both Melvins and Redd Kross on the summer 2019 tour.
