The Rolling Stones 1969-1974 - The Mick Taylor Years

Direct from the press release:

The Rolling Stones 1969-1974 - The Mick Taylor Years

Coming to DVD on July 27
The story behind The Stones' finest era...
Hi Res Cover ArtOften regarded as the period in which The Rolling Stones recorded the finest music of their career, the years during which Mick Taylor was the fifth Stone remain the band's 'Golden Age'. Notably, on albums Let It Bleed, Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main Street the Stones' sound changed as they developed new ideas and were informed by a range of new influences. But crucially it was Taylor's sophisticated blues and jazz licks that gave The Rolling Stones an added dimension between 1969 and 1974 - one they lacked both before and afterwards. This dynamic film tells the behind the scenes story of this hugely productive era for the group.

Featuring interviews with Taylor himself and further contributions from his old boss, John Mayall; author and group colleague, Robert Greenfield; Village Voice music editor, Robert Christgau; Stones session musicians, Al Perkins and Bill Plummer; highly regarded UK music critic, Barney Hoskyns and many others. The program also includes liberal performance footage of The Stones, archive footage and interviews, numerous seldom seen photographs and a host of other features.

Extras include:
- 'Meet Mick' - John Mayall and music historian Alan Clayson tell the Mick Taylor story, prior to his entry into The Rolling Stones.
- Contributor Biographies

Until The Light Takes Us Trailer

Until The Light Takes Us will be released on DVD September 28. Here's a trailer for the Norwegian Black Metal documentary.

Until The Light Takes Us Trailer from factory twenty five on Vimeo.

Direct from the press release:

"Absorbing" -- New York Times (Critic’s Pick)

"Richly compelling and artfully shot" -- LA Weekly (Critic's Pick)

"Crafty and Compelling" -- Salon.com

The award winning film, Until The Light Takes Us tells the story of black metal. Part music scene and part cultural uprising, black metal rose to worldwide notoriety in the mid-nineties when a rash of suicides, murders, and church burnings accompanied the explosive artistic growth and output of a music scene that would forever redefine what heavy metal is and what it stands for to other musicians, artists and music fans world-wide. Until The Light Takes Us goes behind the highly sensationalized media reports of "Satanists running amok in Europe" to examine the complex and largely misunderstood principles and beliefs that led to this rebellion against both Christianity and modern culture.

To capture this on film, directors Aaron Aites and Audrey Ewell moved to Norway and lived with the musicians for several years, building relationships that allowed them to create a surprisingly intimate portrait of this violent, but ultimately misunderstood, movement. The result is a poignant, moving story that’s as much about the idea that reality is composed of whatever the most people believe, regardless of what’s actually true, as it is about a music scene that blazed a path of murder and arson across the northern sky.

This is the first time Until The Light Takes Us will be available on DVD -- it had a theatrical run of over 20 weeks and grossed over $130,000 at the box office. The film will be available on a number of formats including a 1-disc Standard DVD, a Limited 2-disc DVD Edition, Blu-Ray and Digital Download from the Factory 25 website.

In addition to Until The Light Takes Us, indie film & vinyl label Factory 25 is releasing SEVEN titles in 2010 including Brock Enright: Good Times Will Never Be the Same and the Brock Enright/Kirsten Deirup album Torben, Rio Breaks, Sir Henry At Rollinson End, You Wont Miss Me, Wah Do Dem and Make out With Violence.

UNTIL THE LIGHT TAKES US STARS: Gylve “Fenriz” Nagell, Varg “Count Grishnackh” Vikernes, Jan Axel “Hellhammer” Blomberg, Kjetil “Frost” Haraldstad, Olve “Abbath” Eikemo, Harald “Demonaz” Nævdal, Bjarne Melgaard and Harmony Korine

Big Star To Honor Alex Chilton

Durectly lifted from the press release:
BIG STAR RISES TO HONOR ALEX CHILTON

Surviving Members To Be Joined On Stage May 15 in Memphis
by Mike Mills of R.E.M., Brendan Benson of The Raconteurs and More

LOS ANGELES – What was originally planned as a triumphant homecoming concert for Big Star has become a tribute to Alex Chilton, a founding member of the band who died unexpectedly in March. Surviving members of the influential power-pop group will perform May 15 at the Levitt Shell in Overton Park in Memphis, Tennessee. Bassist Andy Hummel, drummer Jody Stephens and guitarists John Auer and Ken Stringfellow will be joined on stage by a number of special guests, including Mike Mills of R.E.M. and Brendan Benson of The Raconteurs.

Tickets for this special event – $20 in advance and $25 at the door – are available online at www.levittshell.org or by calling 1-888-71-TICKETS. VIP packages are also available for $65, each includes one admission to the concert and a soundcheck party prior to the show.

Big Star’s transformation from obscure Memphis band to standard bearers for an entire genre of music is one of rock and roll’s most thrilling, if unlikely, success stories. Despite little radio airplay, low record sales and only a handful of concerts, the band inspired a legion of followers with a unique sound that foreshadowed the rise of college and alternative rock.

After breaking up in 1974, Chilton and Stephens reconvened Big Star in 1993 with John Auer and Ken Stringfellow of The Posies. In the years that followed, the quartet toured and recorded periodically, completing the studio album In Space in 2005.

A pair of acclaimed releases from Rhino Records last year cast a long overdue spotlight on Big Star’s influential musical legacy. The first was an expanded version of I Am The Cosmos, the posthumous debut from Big Star founder Chris Bell, who died in 1978. The second was, Keep An Eye On The Sky, a definitive look at the group’s history that mixed album tracks with unreleased recordings and live performances. To celebrate the boxed set’s release, Big Star played a rare concert last November in Brooklyn, New York, earning raves for the performance.

Directly from the press release:
Artist Brock Enright and his girlfriend, painter Kirsten Deirup have shocked the world with their art and exposed their personal life in the film Brock Enright: Good Times Will Never Be the Same, and will continue to keep people guessing with their debut album: Torben.

The LP is broken up onto two distinct sides - Side A “Day” with Brock doing all the vocals is full of twisted rhythms while Side B “Night” is full of lullabies sung by Kirsten. Torben, the name of Brock & Kirsten’s son was used as the sound board for this series of songs, all of the “Day” songs needed to excite him, while the “Night” songs relaxed him. Torben will be available June 29th on vinyl and also as part of a limited edition bundle, packaged with a DVD of the film, Vinyl LP, film poster and artwork by Brock Enright himself from the Factory 25 website.

Brock rose to fame after Rolling Stone profiled his company, Videogames Adventure Services (VAS), which provided “designer kidnapping services,” which lead to appearances on “The View,” “Good Morning America,” and countless other print publications. Enright put aside kidnapping and began focusing exclusively on his artwork and was selected to participate in numerous acclaimed group exhibitions including PS1/MoMA’s Greater New York show and multiple solo shows all over the world.

Factory 25 is releasing SEVEN new titles on DVD and vinyl between July and October, kicking off with Brock Enright: Good Times Will Never Be The Same, Black Metal doc Until The Light Takes Us, Altamont Now, Rio Breaks, Sir Henry At Rollinson End, You Wont Miss Me, Wah Do Dem starring Sean Bones and Norah Jones and Make out With Violence.

Also, Amanda Palmer and renowned minstrel Jason Webley's recent discovery Evelyn Evelyn, the world's only conjoined twin singer-songwriter duo, have released a video for their quirky song "Elephant, Elephant" and will begin a North American tour next week in Vancouver. MP3 Richard McGraw Covers Leonard Cohen - Sort Of...

Richard McGraw had paid tribute to Leonard Cohen on his new album Burying The Dead.

McGraw discusses the creation of “Balmville Motel”:
“It started as a joke when I replaced the words ‘Chelsea Hotel’ with ‘Balmville Motel’, a crumby run down place in my hometown of Newburgh, NY. I took it seriously when I felt there was a story that needed to be told of my teenage lust and rejection. I would describe the details of the heart ache, but from an older, more stoic, perhaps wiser perspective. It’s a similar perspective Cohen takes when recalling his incident with Janis Joplin at the Chelsea Hotel."

"I started writing it in 2002. It would take me five years to complete. I gave up on it for a year or two because it was such a daunting task. ‘Chelsea Hotel #2’ is a concise masterpiece. I wasn’t trying to re-write the perfect song, nor was I trying to fill his shoes, but I had to at least be driving towards his ball park, or be somewhere near his neighborhood, and that was no easy task. My re-write turned out more long winded, and I used the chorus ideas from his original version of ‘Chelsea Hotel.’"

New Indigo Girls Live Staring Down the Brilliant Dream

The new live 2 CD release by The Indigo Girls Staring Down the Brilliant Dream will be available June 29 from IG Recordings/Vanguard Records. It features 31 songs selected by the "girls" themselves.

Press Release Info:
The CD reflects the spontaneity of a typical Indigos concert and includes a mix of solo performances and other numbers backed by their full band, plus vocal collaborations with such guests artists as Brandi Carlile and Jill Hennessey. Staring Down the Brilliant Dream encapsulates the wide range of emotions that fill their shows with fire and wonder, from the warm, sing-a-long spirit of Saliers' "Closer to Fine" to the political combustion of Ray's "Go."

With two decades and countless concerts behind them, it would be understandable if the duo now found it hard to distinguish one concert from the next. Instead, as this CD proves, they remain as engaged and present onstage as ever. For each track, Saliers and Ray have penned personal notes on how they wrote each song, what they remember about that specific show, and why - among the thousands to chose from - they value those particular performances so much. The girls also personally picked photos submitted by fans for a special commemorative book like package. Produced by The Indigo Girls and Brian Speiser, Staring Down The Dream is a brilliant reminder of all the concerts audiences were lucky to catch -- and consolation for the ones they missed..

"Sing Me To Sleep" is a whimsical collection of lullabies and non-lullabies covered by some of our favorite indie artists. All proceeds from this wonderful album are donated to The Valerie Fund, a 501(c)(3) non-profit charitable organization that provides support for the comprehensive health care of children with cancer and blood disorders. The CD will release worldwide on May 18, 2010.

This is a rare no-brainer tribute LP. Not only do the proceeds enrich the Valerie Fund, benefiting kids with cancer and rare blood disorders, but also musically it glows like a night-light. Instead of the fatiguing feting of one artist, Sing salutes a genre instead, refreshing an old dog. Though it’s too bad Casey Mecija selects “Dear Prudence” instead of “Good Night” from The Beatles’ White Album, that’s the only misstep. Dean & Britta coo Jack Early’s “Making Me Smile?” Sweet! Stars tackle The Smiths’ titular 1985 b-side, “Asleep?” Ditto! Tanya Donelly mellifluously croons Henry Mancini’s 1961 Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ standard, “Moon River,” with jazzy sass? Sure! Neil Halstead’s hushes out Kate Bush’s 1985 U.K. #20 “Cloudbusting,” mit banjo? Capital! O+S folk-out former Big Star star, the late Chris Bell’s 1978 b-side “You and Your Sister,” sounding like they’re covering This Mortal Coil’s 1991 Blood version? Beautiful! (Likewise for 13 more sugarplums—even moody Mark Kozelek’s “Have You Forgotten” turns into pleasant dreams, via Jenny Owen Youngs. Case closed—nighty night! - Jack Rabid (The Big Takeover)

Need your little one to fall asleep, but he's a little too cool for the obvious out-dated lullaby? Are you afraid you're not going to be able to grant your tot's request of "Boys of Summer" performed by the Papercuts? Rest easy. This album contains the sweet sounds of "indie" acts performing all sorts of songs in lullaby form. Featuring acts that the parents remember, such as Tanya Donelly, and those they should know, such as Sigor Ros, as well as both traditional ("You Are My Sunshine") and classic songs ("Dear Prudence"), this American Laundromat Records release has something for any parent who doesn't want to deny their little one of indie cred. Plus, all proceeds go towards the Valerie Fund, which supports children with cancer and blood disorders. Sleep well. - Ryan Weibush (PrefixMag.com)
