Nikki Sixx Shocks With , Erm, Shocking Photos
Wow Nikki Sixx discovered Joel-Peter Witkin. I remember 1994.
Here's a story about Nikki Sixx and his current rebel stance on facebook:
Toronto Sun
Silly Nikki, you can't post naked fat women on Facebook. Didn't we learn from the banned Lane Bryant bra commercial that no one likes that? And those women were clothed and normal sized.
Oh and by the way, Motley Crue amd Poison are touring together. But the part that bugs me is that The New York Dolls are opening for them.

Ben Allison to Collaborate With Robert Pinsky
Bassist and composer Ben Allison has announced performances to support his 10th album, Action-Refraction, which will be released April 12th via Palmetto. Action-Refraction marks Allison's first album of covers, and it features songs by such artists as PJ Harvey, Donny Hathaway, and Neil Young. Additionally he will have an ongoing 2011 Tuesday night workshop at Kush on NYC's Lower East Side.
Ben Allison and his trio will perform live with Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky at the New School’s Celebration Film Noir on April 5th. Allison has also been collaborating with legendary performance artist Joey Arias, in preparation for a Town Hall show April 21st.
Allison said of the project, “Artistically, Pinsky and Arias seem to be polar opposites – Poet Laureate and Downtown Diva. But both are extraordinary communicators who use words and music to get to something that’s personal and all-embracing. The freeform elements of music and poetry, and music and performance art all seem to flow from the same impulse and fit together in my mind. Robert is "America’s civic poet." Joey is a larger-than-life icon of the NYC art scene. What they have in common is a dedication to bringing their art to the public and putting themselves out there. I feel equally at home working with both of them and love the challenge and range of expression.”
Events:
April 5 @ The New School, 8pm / Ben Allison Trio
‘A Celebration of Film Noir’ with Roberty Pinsky, Frank Kimbrough & Rudy Royston
April 6 @ Jazz at Lincoln Center, 7pm / Ben Allison
Listening Party for ‘Action-Refraction’ and Q&A with Ken Druker
April 12 & 13 @ Jazz Standard, 7:30pm & 9pm / Ben Allison Band
Album Release Parties for ‘Action-Refraction’
April 21 @ Town Hall, 8pm
Joey Arias & Ben Allison
April 19 & 26 @ Kush, 8pm / Ben Allison Trio
Ongoing 2011 Tuesday Workshop Residency (191 Chrystie)

Submarine Trailer
This British film directed by Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd, Garth Marenghi, Mighty Boosh), based upon the book by Joe Dunthorne, looks gorgeous. I can't wait to see it. Although it's likely I may have to purchase the dvd unless there's enough buzz to get it to play an art cinema here.

I love it! I just bought the EP Alive at the Same Time from itunes. The band has several groovy 7" available from various sites, including the February release "Bonedaddy" from Jeffrey Drag Records. There's a Christmas song and colored vinyl from Turbo Time Records. Check out Pujol's myspace page for more information and links here.

Mountains To Release New Abum and Plot Short Tour
Mountains will release their new album Air Museum May 10 via Thrill Jockey.
Air Museum's information:
Air Museum blurs the lines between acoustic and electronic music even more without sacrificing melody or the delicacy of their sound. It is an album of firsts. It was the first album that the acoustic instruments were not processed via a computer. Instead, the processing of the instrumentation (acoustic and electric guitar, cello, accordion, piano, bass etc.) was done using a variety of pedals, modular synths, and other analog techniques. While acoustic instruments were used extensively, the album manifests itself sonically as their most "electronic" record yet. Air Museum is also their first record that was made in a studio. Working in the studio expanded their possibilities, giving more room for experimentation. While much of the album was recorded in real time with minor editing, the band took the opportunity to utilize the studio as an instrument of sorts, investing a great amount of time in customizing their approach to post-production. Air Museum was recorded at Telescope Recording, in Brooklyn, New York, between December 2010 and January 2011, with the exception of "Blue Lanterns On East Oxford" which was recorded in Philadelphia in the spring of 2010 and "Live At The Triple Door", an edit of a live performance that took place in Seattle at the 2009 Decibel Festival.
Air Museum track list:

Anna Waronker Q&A
This Is My Happening presents a Q&A with the very talented and very busy Anna Waronker:
First off, thanks for taking the time to do this for my DIY blog. I very much appreciate your time. Congratulations on the accolades you and your writing partner Charlotte Caffey (The Go Go's) have received for Lovelace: A Rock Opera. You wrote the music and co-wrote the libretto with Jeffery Leonard Bowman. That’s quite an undertaking. Bowman conceptualized the work, so how did you come to be involved with such a unique project?
AW: Jeffery came up with the idea to write a musical about Linda after reading her obituary. Charlotte and I became involved shortly after, primarily music-wise. It wasn't until several years later that we decided to turn it into a rock opera. That is when Charlotte and I got involved in writing the book and libretto. Honestly, Charlotte and I would have never become involved with Linda's story, and we are so grateful, because this show has become an incredible outlet for us both musically and emotionally.
Having been horrified by Linda Lovelace's book Ordeal, I'm a bit curious as to the tone of the musical. Some press has stated Lovelace: A Rock Musical was based on the porn film Deep Throat, but having seen the clip on the show's website, (here), it appears to heavily incorporate Ordeal and Linda Lovelace’s subsequent role as a feminist speaker. Can you explain the tone or tones of the musical? Did you manage to inject humor?
AW: It's not an adaptation of Ordeal, but we do touch on a lot of the same experiences. The show is pretty emotional. The only fun part is when she films Deep Throat, because the people involved - Harry Reems and Gerard Damiano - are such characters. There usually isn't a dry eye in the house by the end. I may have cried every time I saw it.
AW: We are in the process of setting up a few different ways for people to see the show in the US. No wad has been shot. We want this show to go on for a long time.
In 2002 you released both your first solo album Naked, and Ze Malibu Kids' album Sound It Out, ( a Caffey, McDonald, Waronker version of a Cowsills experience). You also did the cult classic web series Bitchin’ Ass, which originally aired on www.reddkross.com (here). It's currently also available on youtube. It’s a really funny series, clearly done for the sake of creating art and a good time. Plus - who doesn’t love wigs?
AW: I think we did Bitchin’ Ass in 2001 or 2002. (It’s) definitely my favorite theme song that I've ever written.
Do you have any funny stories to share about the series? Speaking for the fans, we hope there are more bizarre family art projects in the future.
AW: It's all a little peek into the magical and crazy brain of Jeff McDonald. You would have to ask him.
Your new album California Fade is your first solo work in almost a decade. It seems your first album's cover art would have been perfect for this album. It’s themes are so personal. Was there any trepidation about sharing it with an audience?
AW: Yes, but that's just how I do it. Some of it is actually embarrassing to listen to sometimes, lyrically speaking. But I really love the record and it captures a very big turning point in my life - into becoming a true grown up... well, sort of.
“Can You Feel My Love” speaks about your new world with your son. How has becoming a parent influenced your writing? Your world?
AW: It has literally changed my life. In such great ways and also very hard ways. It's been a pretty radical shift in terms of my day to day life. I've been self employed my whole life, and in charge of my time. I became a very hard worker and my focus was sharp and endless. Now I have episodes of that, but my focus is naturally on Alfie (ED: her son with husband Steve McDonald). And getting rest. And having relationships with my friends and family. And keeping my work alive has never felt more important.
You seem like a confident, "kick ass" woman, and yet extremely vulnerable. It’s a precarious balance. What do you think helps keep your writing balanced in that way?
AW: First of all, thank you. My writing is as honest as I can be. Sometimes it's very much my side of the story, but I don't hold back. Writing was the first thing in my life that was ever all mine. They were my thoughts, my ideas, my gut feelings to listen to or not. My finished result. My opinion. And mostly, my place to put whatever was affecting me, instead of storing it somewhere in my mind or body.
You not only produced this record, but also took the helm on vocal and string arrangements. Are these skills that you’ve had to work at over the years via various projects, or do they come naturally to you?
AW: I have always done vocal arrangements. One of the misconceptions in That Dog was that Rachel and Petra were the harmonic geniuses. Don't get me wrong, they have insane abilities vocally, but the core sound of That Dog came from me. I have always thought in harmony, and I think that is why I enjoy doing strings as well. It's another voice to harmonize ultimately.
Any advice for writing?
AW: Don’t settle. It shows.
What’s your process?
AW: My process is all over the place. Sometimes lyrics come first. Sometimes a melody, or a chord progression. I think the thing that is most consistent is that I like to write while recording. I feel like it captures that initial chemistry.
What’s your favorite part of being a musician?
AW: How it feels when I'm doing it.
Your least favorite part of being a musician?
AW: I have hated touring and the politics a lot in my life. It has been such a long time that I don't know how I would feel about them now. Chances are that I will feel the same.
What’s next for Anna Waronker? Sounds like maybe a tour?
AW: I want California Fade to have a long life. I'd love to play some shows. I’m planning on it in April. I also want “Lovelace“ to go to New York City soon. And I want to make another record. But for right now, Alfie just woke up from his nap and I want to go scoop him up.
Thanks for your time - it is very much appreciated.
Five Foot Two Records (here) established by Anna Waronker and Charlotte Caffey, is selling California Fade, and the digital version includes two extra songs. A limited Anna EP is included with the vinyl version of California Fade - which has been given the deluxe colored vinyl treatment. This boutique label’s roster is small, but it packs a wallop and includes the work of Redd Kross members Jeff and Steve McDonald (to whom Charlotte Caffey and Anna Waronker are married, respectively). Also included is the truly fantastic and fun album Really Really Happy by The Muffs.

Any chance of future performances in other cities in the U.S.? Or has the proverbial wad been shot? (Pardon the pun). Are you now just an owner of the work for licensing purposes?AW: We are in the process of setting up a few different ways for people to see the show in the US. No wad has been shot. We want this show to go on for a long time.

The Paperhead Bring Nashville Brand of Psych-Pop
Nashville band Paperhead are a bit of a throwback to '60s garage pop. It jangles! They will release their eponymous LP March 22, via Chicago's Trouble In Mind Records.
We have no idea how Nashville got so lucky to have teenage bands like this, but we’re not gonna complain. God knows psychedelic music hasn’t hit us this hard since sophomore year of high school when we heard Piper at the Gates of Dawn for the first time in Jimmy Stewart’s smokey basement.

Gangpol & Mit
Gangpol & Mit will release their debut on Mar. 29 through Mike Patton's Ipecac Recordings. The full length album, The 1000 Softcore Tourist People Club, will include fourteen tracks. You may hear a teaser at Bandcamp here.
Colourmusic To Release Debut LP
Colourmusic will release their debut LP My ____ Is Pink, May 10 via Memphis Industries.
Ryan Hendrix says of the album, “We wanted to focus on human sexuality and reproduction. Not in terms of turning people on; from a point of view of fear and anxiety, and how it’s the prominent decision-making force in many people’s lives.” That's about as linear as things get as Hendrix continues, “If you write a song that’s too literal, it dates it. We’d rather make things a little more subconscious. It gives a song a longer life span because you never know what’s really going on.”
As for the process of creating the album, Hendrix explains, “The music tells us what the song is going to be about. Once we have a drum beat, it’s alive. And once we come back to it, it’s basically beckoning us to finish it.”

The White Stripes Are An Ex Band
Just in case the artwork on Under Great White Northern Lights and the recent reissues of their albums by Third Man wasn't enough of a clue that The White Stripes are no more - here's an official announcement:
The White Stripes would like to announce that today, February 2nd, 2011,
their band has officially ended and will make no further new recordings or perform live.
The reason is not due to artistic differences or lack of wanting to continue, nor any
health issues as both Meg and Jack are feeling fine and in good health.
It is for a myriad of reasons, but mostly to preserve What is beautiful and special about
the band and have it stay that way.
Meg and Jack want to thank every one of their fans and admirers for the incredible
support they have given throughout the 13 plus years of the White Stripes’ intense and
incredible career.
Third Man Records will continue to put out unreleased live and studio recordings from
The White Stripes in their Vault Subscription record club, as well as through regular
channels.
Both Meg and Jack hope this decision isn’t met with sorrow by their fans but that it is
seen as a positive move done out of respect for the art and music that the band has
created. It is also done with the utmost respect to those fans who’ve shared in those
creations, with their feelings considered greatly.
With that in mind the band have this to say:
“The White Stripes do not belong to Meg and Jack anymore. The White Stripes belong
to you now and you can do with it whatever you want. The beauty of art and music is
that it can last forever if people want it to. Thank you for sharing this experience. Your
involvement will never be lost on us and we are truly grateful.”
Sincerely,
Meg and Jack White

Smoking Popes Tour Dates 2011
Chicago's own Smoking Popes have announced tour dates in support of their album This is Only a Test, which will be released March 15th.
This is Only a Test marks the bands' first concept album, exploring the theme of the life of a teen. Singer/Guitarist Songwriter Josh Caterer explains, “When I first got the idea to write from a teenage perspective, the individual songs came really quickly. I wrote a song a day for five days. That’s half the album in less than a week. I never write that fast! Each song stands alone as a snapshot from this kid's life. The story doesn't unfold like a narrative. It's more like a collage."

The Ongoing Brilliance of Ken Stringfellow
Sources say there will be a new album from Ken Stringfellow under the collaborative moniker The Disciplines. Apparently Stringfellow and mates are still working on the final touches.
The release is titled Virgins of Menace and it will be available February 15 in the U.S. and March 7 elsewhere. If I get some MP3s for download I'll post them as soon as I can. Meanwhile check out the band's website 'round about here. There is a stream of the single "Kill the Killjoy" and it rocks - needless to say.

A Message from Nash Kato and King Roeser:
Urge Overkill are pleased to formally announce our long-awaited return from the depths of studio silence with a brand new offering: all aboard the Rock&Roll Submarine! We are thrilled that this seaman's dozen o'fresh tracks reflect our time-tested love of all things both Musical and Nautical. And you can expect, loyal listener, the same-gauge torpedoes Urge Overkill has always delivered on target. This sure-to-be controversial recording is now entering its final stage of mixing, and our sonic-sonar is set to "STUN." So check our WarBoard for album updates, as we can't wait to submURGE and recruit some new mates on tour.
