Bio:
Who are the Dead Trees?
Matthew, Noah, Tad and Michael began work on what would become the Fort Music EP. They were longtime friends and had played around Boston in various configurations for years. Michael and Noah had recently played with local friends Drug Rug. When the boys gathered in Dec '06 to record some new songs of Michael's, there were no grand plans to see through or deadlines to meet. They had an engineer friend and a couple hundred bucks and some notions about maybe making some back to basics rock and roll. Luckily for everyone, that approach seemed to work just fine, and after two weeks in an Allston, MA basement they had Fort Music all wrapped up and, more importantly, were most definitely a band. Fort Music EP was widely supported throughout the Coalition Of Independent Music Stores in spring, 2008.
These modest beginnings play out in the The Dead Trees' music in the best way - there's no artifice here, not much "production" to speak of, just a bunch of good musicians doing what comes naturally on a batch of deceptively elegant songs. Two guitars, background vocals here and there, a manic drum fill when necessary. It all feels easy and right. Says Michael: "We don't deprive any of our songs. They're like our children, all different and each as important as the next. We're just borrowing from our heroes and trying to raise a family."
Since those basement sessions things have happened pretty fast - the band sent some CDs around, and next thing you know The Dead Trees were supporting Albert Hammond, Jr. on a national tour, did The House Of Blues in LA, Webster Hall in NYC, just about burned down the Metro in Chicago, and abandoned a broken down van somewhere in Iowa. There were showcases at Spaceland and Mercury Lounge and interest at labels was piqued. Now being represented by the management duo of Bryna Gootkind (Port O'Brien, Kaki King, Melissa Ferrick) and Ryan Gentles (The Strokes, Albert Hammond, Jr.), they‘ve relocated to Portland, Oregon where they completed their debut LP, King Of Rosa. After signing a Japan-only deal with Japan's leading indie label Five Man Army, the band was invited to perform at the Summer Sonic Festival in Tokyo and Osaka in the summer of 2008 in support of the upcoming release.

New El Perro Del Mar
Sweden's El Perro Del Mar will release a third album,Love Is Not Pop, October 20.
"Shortly after having finished touring with my second album 'From the Valley to the Stars' I started writing new songs. For some reason all the songs were about love and in particular that of the doomed kind. Unconsciously I think I knew what I was trying to tell myself. I'd spent some bad times in New York and some good times in Paris and both these cities have made a great imprint on this album and my current outlook on love. I've decided to call it 'Love Is Not Pop' - the songs on the album are all pop songs and they are all about love. But naturally, it is not all as simple as that. As much as pop can be love and vice versa - I'd like to believe that love goes so much deeper than a pop song. The title is of course also a play with words as well as a play with my persona up until this point. This album is also very much a way for me to look further into ways of writing and expressing myself - it definitely is a conscious step away from what I did on my last album. The mindset is darker and the soundscape mysteriously groovy thus it is not by chance I've chosen to work together with Rasmus Hägg, the other half of the acclaimed Swedish duo Studio, as a co-producer. His input and source of inspiration has been no other than apure revelation to me. Working so closely together with someone has been a new experience for me and I feel excited about having come to the point where I've been wanting to let someone into the very much abstract and intimate process of song writing. I'm glad it was Rasmus I let in."
- El Perro Del Mar/Sarah Assbring
Track list:
1. Gotta Get Smart
2. Change Of Heart
3 L Is For Love
4. Let Me In
5. Heavenly Arms
6. It Is Something (To Have Wept)
7. A Better Love
Bonus tracks:
8. L Is For Love (Low Motion Disco's additional love remix)
9. Change Of Heart (J Rintamäki remix)
10. Let Me In (Nhessingtons remix)
Shows:
November 9th Joe's Pub, New York City

That Summeertime Sound - A Novel
“A rock ‘n’ roll road trip that’s also a page-turner.” -- Nylon Mag
It’s the summer after his freshman year of college, and the 19-year-old narrator of Matthew Specktor’s That Summertime Sound has two options: return home to Los Angeles, to a city and a family that hardly notice him; or journey to the heart of America—Columbus, Ohio—for a summer of unexpected and life-defining experiences.
Set against the Columbus music scene of the 1980s, Specktor’s lead character treks to Ohio in search of his favorite band, Lords of Oblivion. Headed by eccentric frontman Nic Devine, Lords of Oblivion are the antithesis of the popular New Wave sound of the decade. The narrator quickly adapts to life in Columbus, dressing in the local thrift store fashions, finding an on-again off-again girlfriend, going out, sleeping late, and above all, seeing live music. Eventually, he meets and befriends Nic Devine, cementing a friendship that will define the summer.
That Summertime Sound reads like a music encyclopedia with constant references to seminal bands like The Feelies, Hüsker Du, Pere Ubu, and Uriah Heap. Specktor’s cinematic prose is so visual that the music and characters become a reality. That Summertime Sound captures the vibrancy of youth and the thrill of summer. It’s about going along for the ride, because you can, when you can choose yourself before choosing responsibility.
To accompany the release of the novel, www.thatsummertimesound.com features audio recordings of readings done by Jeremy Irons, James Franco, Morgan Freeman, Gwyneth Paltrow, and J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr.

More 9 News / Contest / Shane Acker / Elijah Wood / Crispin Glover
There is a contest for die-hard geeks (I say it lovingly) who've been following hte facebook posts made by The Scientist. The Talisman Challenge sweepstakes is directly connected to the Scientist's research
and will run this week on www.9experiment.com.
The spiel:
A few weeks back, the Scientist was forcibly removed from his laboratory and interrogated. Upon returning to his lab, the Scientist realized that the Chancellor's men had seized a collection of designs vital to his research. One of these designs holds the key to his next phase of development.
The designs have been shredded... torn into 9 pieces, scattered in 9 secret locations. We must find all 9 pieces and put them back together to reveal a secret alchemical code. Only the typewriter on www.9experiment.com can help decode the hidden message from the designs. Those who find all 9 hidden pieces and use the typewriter to decipher the code will be treated to another fantastic piece of 9” movie art, and can enter for a chance to win a pair of the Limited Edition 9” Shoes from Pony, as well as other great 9” movie prizes.

Official 9 Film Synopsis:
A new era in animated storytelling begins on 9.9.09. Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton (The Corpse Bride, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory) and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Nightwatch) join forces to produce wunderkind director Shane Acker's distinctively original and thrilling tale. 9 stars Elijah Wood, John C. Reilly, Jennifer Connelly, Martin Landau, Christopher Plummer and Crispin Glover and features the music of Danny Elfman. When 9 (The Lord of the Ring's Elijah Wood) first comes to life, he finds himself in a post-apocalyptic world. All humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction. Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to destroy them in the first place. As they'll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them.

Art Brut
Art Brut are one of the best bands currently performing today. Seeing this clever, quirky, talented bunch live is highly recommended. Buying all of their albums goes without saying, really. Would I steer you wrong?
“Argos doesn't claim to live clean. Art Brut vs. Satan begins with one called "Alcoholics Unanimous" and ends with one called "Mysterious Bruises," keyed to the wonderful line, "I fought the floor and the floor won." But there are also several songs about being young and poor — or, in the case of the one called "DC Comics and Chocolate Milkshake," being 28 and still eating nothing but cereal.”

From Sumi to Japan
Bio/Press info:
In 2007, Brian Bonz began writing new songs that would become From Sumi to Japan. By the time summer rolled around the band had begun recording at Seaside Lounge in Sunset Park, accompanied a newly solidified lineup as well as session musicians who played with TV on the Radio, Arcade Fire and Tom Waits.
With friend Chris Bracco (Kevin Devine) at the helm, mixing continued at his Buckingham-Nicks studio, allowing the group a brief refuge and change of scenery. The unusual opportunity to explore allowed the record to evolve fully, giving the group a chance to transform their songwriting both structurally and sonically. From Sumi to Japan will see digital release on July 28th and physical release on August 11th via Triple Crown Records.
Tracklisting:
1. Two Tree Blockade
2. Judy & The Alpha Queen

Lissy Trullie Covers Hot Chip
Lissy Trullie has released a video for her cover version of Hot Chip's "Ready For The Floor". It was directed by Richard Kern for a Herve Leger campaign. (Herve Leger makes excellent perfumes by the way - I highly recommend, and wear them). "Ready For The Floor" is also included on the soundtrack for the upcoming much buzzed about (gag / overhype) Diablo Cody film Jennifer's Body.

Bar/None Records To Reissue The Feelies Albums
Long ago, before "Indie" was called "Indie", and "Alternative" was called "Alternative" and "Post Modern" was a term, there was a genre known as "College Rock." Were I pressed to cite references for such a ridiculous non genre of a genre - I supposee R.E.M. and The Feelies would be in the top 10 of the list. Well, "oldies but goodies," The Feelies, via Bar/None Records are re-issuing their albums Crazy Rhythms(debut release), and The Good Earth.
Both albums will be available with deluxe packaging on both CD and vinyl, with liner notes contributed by Chicago music critic Jim Deragotis and Jim Sullivan respectively. There will be bonus material galore, including demos, b-sides, EP tracks and recent live recordings, but those will be separately distributed via digital download cards (so as to retain the integrity and continuity of the original albums).
The band will also play some live dates. Although no tour schedule has been announced, The Feelies will play the following N.Y.C. shows:
Sep 11 2009 8:00P
All Tomorrow’s Parties Festival (Crazy Rhythms) Monticello, New York
Sep 12 2009 8:00P
Bearsville Theatre Bearsville, New York
Sep 13 2009 8:00P
Southpaw (in Brooklyn) Brooklyn, New York
The album reissues are as follows:
Crazy Rhythms:
1. The Boy With The Perpetual Nervousness
2. Fa cé-La
3. Loveless Love
4. Forces At Work
5. Original Love
6. Everybody's Got Something To Hide (Except Me And My Monkey)
7. Moscow Nights
8. Raised Eyebrows
9. Crazy Rhythms
The Good Earth:
1. On The Roof
2. The High Road
3. The Last Roundup
4. Slipping (Into Something)
5. When Company Comes
6. Let's Go
7. Two Rooms
8. The Good Earth
9. Tomorrow Today
10. Slow Down
Band info:
The Feelies are: Glenn Mercer, Bill Million, Dave Weckerman, Brenda Sauter and Stan Demeski. Former band members: Vinny DeNunzio, Anton Feir and Keith NeNunzio (aka Clayton).
Trivia (or trivial)
Overpaid and far more cushy writers than I at Rolling Stone have deemed Crazy Rhythms "One of the 100 best albums of the 1980s."

Tim Burton & Johnny Depp To Collaborate On Dark Shadows Remake / "Alice" Trailer Leak
Rumor has it that Johnny Depp has spilled a bit o' rumor juice, stating that he and Burton will collaborate again next year. The project is said to be a remake of the cult classic / horror soap opera Dark Shadows. The timing is perfect, what with seemingly everyone from tweens to moms having their collective panties in a bunch over everything vampire. Barnabus Collins (the vampire) was the the major character of Dark Shadows when it originally aired, and in at least one subsequent re-make.
The show was extremely popular and remains so even today, gaining new fans every year. It's tough to tell from whic angle Burton and Depp will take the material, however, because it's rife with kitsch, but also gothic and (pardon the pun) deadly serious. Perhaps some mixture of the two will make everyone happy. But it's good to know it's in the hands of two genuinely bizarre and risk taking artists. Humor has worked in the past, IE: Ed Wood, so there is no reason to think lightening can;t strike again. (No reference to Frankenstein / Frankenweenie intended).
The trailer for Alice In Wonderland was "leaked accidentally" by IGN - call me a cynic. I mean, not that I do not firmly believe idiots run the top level of just about everything, but I don;t think this would accidentally leak. I thinkit's a deliberate attempt at buzz. (Is it just me or is "buzz' starting earlier and earlier. Kind of like Christmas music). Alice in Wonderland is due in regular format as well as digital 3D, March 5, 2010. (Though it should be noted that many sources have stated the release date is March 10).
Whatever the intention of IGN and Disney, here the early "leaked" trailer was since removed from www.traileradict.com with the accompanying message "easer trailer for Alice in Wonderland has been removed at the request of Walt Disney Pictures." Aren't they "rolling out" the trailer tomorrow anyway?
Alice in Wonderland releases in March, and an upcoming Comic-Con appearance with tons of geeky questions will likely shed more light on the subject.

Naked Raygun To Enter Studio
Press Release Unedited:
Legendary Chicago punk rockers Naked Raygun recently announced their first trip into a recording studio in over a decade. In two weeks the band is set to enter Transient Sound Studios in Chicago, Illinois to lay down tracks that will eventually be pressed on a series of 7” records. These songs represent the first new material written by the band since 1992 and their first recordings since 1997.
Easily the most influential band bursting forth from the initial Chicago punk rock explosion, Naked Raygun also holds the distinction of being the longest running. When many of their peers were either breaking up or going metal in the mid-to-late 1980s, Naked Raygun soldiered on with their trademark sound, combining infectious vocal melodies with muscular guitar and a precision rhythm section. Echoes of the golden era of Raygun sound can be heard in punk rock circles worldwide.
The band broke up in 1992 and save for a one-off reunion in 1997 to celebrate the release of the Last of the Demohicans collection, stayed inactive while band members tended to family business and occasionally other musical projects such as The Bomb and Pegboy.
In the fall of 2006 drummer Eric Spicer began to get the itch to play the old songs again and gathered the guys together again to reunite for Riot Fest in Chicago. The overwhelming response from the sold out crowd of four thousand prompted Naked Raygun to re-form permanently with their final lineup of Spicer, Bill Stephens on guitar, Pierre Kezdy on bass and Jeff Pezzati on vocals.
Naked Raygun returned to action by playing shows across the Midwest and embarking on their first West Coast tour in over a decade with Bay Area legends the Swingin’ Utters. The band also released their first DVD via Riot Fest Records, entitled “What Poor Gods We Do Make.” The CD/DVD package combined a documentary covering the lifespan of the band with performances from their sold out performance at Riot Fest 2006.
During a recent two night stand at the House of Blues in Chicago, Naked Raygun debuted their first new songs in seventeen years. Met with a reaction of surprise and elation from the slam dancing crowd, both songs embody the classic “Chicago Sound” that Naked Raygun first defined more than twenty years ago.
Those two songs will no doubt appear on the upcoming 7” series the band has planned for Riot Fest Records. Tentative plans for the start of the series have been set for Fall 2009. Once the 7” series ends Naked Raygun plans to hole up in their rehearsal space for a while then re-enter the recording studio to track their first proper LP since 1990’s Raygun, Naked Raygun.
Outside of studio work, Raygun’s plate remains pretty full. This September Naked Raygun returns to the East Coast for the first time in almost twenty years; joining them on the tour are Philadelphia hardcore stars Paint It Black and Chicago’s own Shot Baker. Additionally the group will headline Riot Fest 2009 in Chicago this October, returning to the venerable Metro and playing with old friends Rights of the Accused, No Empathy and Wax.

New Atlas Sound Album
press release: New Atlas Sound Album Logos To Be Released October 20, 2009 on Kranky.
A Note From Bradford Cox on Logos:
My last album was a bedroom laptop type thing. Very introverted. Logos is an album that was recorded all over the world. It's not about me. There are collaborations with other musicians. The lyrics are not autobiographical. The view is a lot more panoramic and less close-up. I became bored with introspection. This was also the case Deerhunter's 'Microcastle' LP, which was written during the same period.
I started recording December of 2007. I recorded the first version of the album, which was not intended for release. Due to some unfortunate mistakes on my part, this "sketch" of the album was leaked. Many of the songs where simply "placeholders," songs I created quickly to help design the "arc" of the album.
I did not react well to the leak, in retrospect. It became the kind of internet-fueled drama that I was quickly learning to despise. I had always desired to speak through music, not blog posts and interviews, etc. I considered abandoning the project.
I toured for a period in Europe with Animal Collective, whose band dynamic was very inspirational to be around. On the bus, we often played improvised iPod games. We would take turns formulating a theme or unifying concept and then play three songs. The goal would be for everyone to try and figure out the theme. During one of these games, someone played "What Am I Going to Do" by the Dovers. I was amazed at the hook - a weird organ thing with drums and electric bass. I mentioned to Noah that someone should really sample that riff. He agreed and he taught me a little about sampling and matching up beats. This ended up as the collaborative effort "Walkabout."
Each song on the album has a similar story. That might be my favorite thing about the album. It's a collection of songs. There is no "filler." There are little scrapbook details everywhere. Sasha Vine [of Sian Alice Group] provided a double-tracked improvised violin part to "Attic Lights" which was recorded backstage at a Deerhunter / Sian Alice Group show in Brighton. It might be my favorite moment of the album. I played it for some younger friends of mine. They cringed. They wanted more songs like "Walkabout." Something with a big beat. I told them when they get older they will appreciate things like harmonicas and violins more.
Laetitia from Stereolab, who i idolized as a teenager and would later befriend on tour, contributed words and vocals to "Quick Canal." The song was originally about 15 minutes long. I had zero ideas for vocals and asked if she could give it a shot. Andy Ramsay [Drummer for Stereolab] took a dub of the original and recorded Laetitia's vocals at his press play studio in London. It was quite a treat to hear the finished product, now at an economical 9 minutes.
Almost everything you hear on the album is a first take. This makes it almost like a "live album" where a band sets up in a studio and just rolls tape. There are songs on here I don't even remember recording.

Billy Corgan / Smashing Pumpkins Finds Drummer
According to a message on Billy Corgan's / the Smashing Pumpkins website, there is now a drummer added to the project. A post on the website read simply, "Billy has been working with young (19) Mike Byrne on demos. Word from the studio is that Mike is an exceptionally talented and gifted drummer and things are going very well. And that is that."

Soundgarden B-Sides and Possible Box Set
According to Chris Cornell, as reported in Rolling Stone, Soundgarden have been speaking about "...trying to put together an album of B sides and maybe a box set with some unreleased tracks we have. This is something we first talked about 10 years ago. We all feel it’s time to do that, and we have a lot of fans out there, and we have a lot of new fans discovering our music, and I think the catalog and the legacy of the band has been ignored by the record label and previous management, so we decided to get together, and start working towards putting something like that out.” He further commented, "We did so many B sides, and we were always miffed by the concept that the largest part of our audience was in the U.S., and yet, we were always churning out B sides for other territories, so they would buy the local release instead of the import. That’s what I am the most excited about, to get that collection out so every one knows its there and has access to it. I think a box set would be good, too.”
He has neither confirmed nor denied reunion tour rumors, but rather answered, "“You never know.”

The Dynamites Featuring Charles Walker
Like weet soul music? Mods? Northern Soul enthusiasts? Erm, Amy Winehouse fans? The Dynamites (featuring Charles Walker), will release their follow-up to Kaboom, titled, Burn It Down, on September 15.
"New York City has the Dap-Kings, Nashville has the Dynamites, whose approach is about three quarters James Brown with touches of Memphis, Motown and New Orleans. [And] The
Dynamites have found a singer to put them across: Charles Walker, who has been on the soul
circuit since the 1960s. His voice rivals better-known headliners; he's an authoritative,
gospel-steeped shouter and a dramatic ballad builder. It's old-school music that works up a
genuine sweat."

Official 9 Film Synopsis:
A new era in animated storytelling begins on 9.9.09. Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton (The Corpse Bride, Charlie and The Chocolate Factory) and Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted, Nightwatch) join forces to produce wunderkind director Shane Acker's distinctively original and
thrilling tale. All humans are gone, and it is only by chance that he discovers a small community of others like him
taking refuge from fearsome machines that roam the earth intent on their extinction. Despite being the neophyte of the group, 9 convinces the others that hiding will do them no good. They must take the offensive if they are to survive, and they must discover why the machines want to
destroy them in the first place. As they'll soon come to learn, the very future of civilization may depend on them.
Character Descriptions
1
-Voiced by one of the world's most respected actors, Christopher Plummer, 1 is the Scientist's first creation. As the elder, he is the self-declared leader of the group. He is clever and sly, but also domineering, quick-tempered, and threatened by the new arrival of 9, whose higher intellect leads him to question authority.
2
-Voiced by Academy Award Winner Martin Landau, 2 is a kindly but now frail inventor and explorer who embodies the Scientist's strong creative spirit. An inquisitive personality, 2 is fearless. Director Shane Acker affectionately describes him as a 'salty old dog'.
3/4
-Communicating visually, not verbally, 3 and 4 are the scholarly twins who voraciously catalogue everything they can see and find, recording and building a massive database for the group of the world that surrounds them and the history that led up to their creation.
5
-Voiced by Academy Award nominee John C. Reilly, 5 is a caring, nurturing engineer -- the loyal, big-hearted 'common man' who always tries to play the peacemaker. He is also an apprentice of 2, with whom he shares a special bond.
6
-6, the group's visionary is voiced by Crispin Glover. Although reclusive and eccentric, his bursts of artistic inspiration through drawings made from his pen nib hands may be keys to help his fellow stitchpunk beings navigate their darkest hours.
7
-A brave and self-sufficient warrior, 7, voiced by Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly, is the group's sole female. A fiercely independent adventuress she has been out patrolling the wasteland. To survive, she has adapted, finding the bones of a deceased bird and crafting her signature skull helmet.
8
-Armed with a giant kitchen cleaver and half a scissor blade, the none-too-bright muscle and enforcer of the group, 8, is created to help the others physically survive the dangerous post-apocalyptic world.
9
-To voice the lead role of the newly born -- and aborning hero -- 9, Acker couldn't help but have in mind an actor who was so central to the film set he had worked on years earlier in New Zealand -- The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King star Elijah Wood.
