White/Light
WHITE/LIGHT
March 6-28, 2010 MCA, Chicago
Experimental music duo White/Light -- musician Matt Clark and sound engineer Jeremy Lemos -- create an interactive music installation. Two tape machines loop drone sounds and minimal electric guitar samples in the darkened gallery, while a glowing microphone entices visitors into the space which triggers a sensor that alters the sound frequencies. Twelve tracks of looped recordings are created by an analog synthesizer and a shruti box, a wooden instrument that originated in India. Clark periodically visits the gallery to create new electric guitar samples for the loops.
Acclaimed musicians -- including Steve Shelley of Sonic Youth, Disappears, Tim Kinsella of Joan of Arc, and Lucky Dragons from Los Angeles -- join White/Light for special performances throughout the duration of the exhibition, that opens on the evening of March 5, 2010 during First Fridays.
White/Light discuss their work at an Artists' Talk on Tuesday, March 9, at 6 pm, followed by a performance in the gallery. White/Light began in 2003 as a recording project with Lemos layering analog electronics, synthesizers, electric bass, and shruti box underneath Clark's electric guitar. The duo began performing live in 2004 and they have played various venues in the U.S. and Europe. They have recorded two full-length albums and are currently working on a collaborative album with Disappears and Steve Shelley.

When You're Strange: A FIlm About the Doors
Unedited Press Release:
WHEN YOU’RE STRANGE: A FILM ABOUT THE DOORS
TO BE RELEASED IN THEATERS ON FRIDAY, APRIL 9
Directed by Tom DiCillo and Narrated by Johnny Depp
Feature Length Documentary Tells The Legendary Quartet’s Story—
A Previously Unseen View Of The Band At Work And Play,
Comprised Entirely Of Archival Footage
The Film’s Soundtrack Arrives March 30 From Rhino
And Includes Both Studio And Live Versions Of Classic Tracks
LOS ANGELES – Rhino Entertainment announced today that, following a prestigious festival run, WHEN YOU’RE STRANGE: A FILM ABOUT THE DOORS will receive a theatrical release in select markets on Friday, April 9. The crowd-pleasing documentary has been featured at the Sundance, Berlin, Deauville and San Sebastian Film Festivals and most recently played to sold-out shows at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.
Produced by Wolf Films/Strange Pictures, in association with Rhino Entertainment, and released by Abramorama, the 90-minute film is the first feature documentary about The Doors.
“They say if you remember the ‘60s you weren’t there,” said producer Dick Wolf. “I can state definitively that one of the things I do remember is buying THE DOORS first album the day it came out and then listening to it about ten or twelve times in a row. Both sides. Every song. I’ve been a fan ever since. This movie is the story of the band but it is also an insight into a moment in time that will never be repeated.”
WHEN YOU’RE STRANGE uncovers historic and previously unseen footage of the illustrious rock quartet and provides new insight into the revolutionary impact of its music and legacy. Directed by award-winning writer/director Tom DiCillo and narrated by Johnny Depp, the film is a riveting account of the band’s history.
Said Depp, “Watching the hypnotic, hitherto unreleased footage of Jim, John, Ray and Robby, I felt like I experienced it all through their eyes. As a rock n’ roll documentary, or any kind of documentary for that matter, it simply doesn’t get any better than this. What an honor to have been involved. I am as proud of this as anything I have ever done.”
The film reveals an intimate perspective on the creative chemistry between drummer John Densmore, guitarist Robby Krieger, keyboardist Ray Manzarek and singer Jim Morrison -- four brilliant artists who made The Doors one of America’s most iconic and influential rock bands. Using footage shot between the band’s 1965 formation and Morrison’s 1971 death, WHEN YOU’RE STRANGE follows the band from the corridors of UCLA’s film school, where Manzarek and Morrison met, to the stages of sold-out arenas.
Shortly before the film’s theatrical release, its soundtrack will be available March 30 and features 13-songs chronicling The Doors’ six landmark albums with studio versions of classic tracks mixed with legendary live cuts including performances from The Ed Sullivan Show and The Isle Of Wight Festival.
The film is produced by Wolf Films/Strange Pictures, in association with Rhino Entertainment, and released by Abramorama. Additional credits for WHEN YOU’RE STRANGE include producers Dick Wolf, John Beug, Jeff Jampol, and Peter Jankowski. The film is written and directed by Tom DiCillo (“Johnny Suede,” “Living in Oblivion”). Narrated by Johnny Depp.

R.I.P. Doug Fieger / The Knack
Doug Fieger the lead singer of The Knack who sang the power pop hit "My Sharona" (and lesser known but equally great "Good Girls Don't,") passed away yesterday evening at the age of 57. In 2006 Fieger underwent surgery to remove brain tumors and had recently been battling cancer. R.I.P. and thanks for the music.

Robots In Disguise Ask Fans For Help With Their New Album
I'm really picky about what electronic music I enjoy, but I really like Robots In Disguise. Plus I always like to help promote worthy female bands. So if you haven't given them a chance - I've posted some videos for you to view (lubricated for your pleasure). They're working on a new album and ask for your alms.
A message from the band:
"Since we are desperate for cash now and since the evil Music Biz won’t give us any we are prostituting ourselves to you and letting you get up close and personal as we go back into the studio to finish up our 4th album. Pledge have suggested a variety of ways that you can get involved, from signed exclusive merchandise to us coming to your house to rock your parties.. short of illegal or immoral it’s all here! So get your coins out and throw them in the magical Robots In Disguise wishing well!!! Not only will we make our best ever record for your listening pleasure, but part of the proceeds will go to benefit the Alzheimers Society (http://www.alzheimers.org.uk)
We love you Robot Patrol!
Les Robottes"
You can help them out with your shiny pennies if you clickenzy here.
And if it gets you to listen to the music, yeah that's Noel Fielding at the beginning.
And here in the video below, and other places I can't be bothered to list.

Apples In Non-Pythagorean Musical Scale
Robert Schneider (The Apples In Stereo) has invented a new musical scale - the Non-Pythagorean Musical Scale. (What've you done, ya slackers?) It was used on New Magnetic Wonder. It was utilised more on the new album Travellers in Space and Time, which includes "C.P.U.," the first song written with this scale. If you wish to download the scale and compose with it click here.

Postdata Self Releases Debut
Paul Murphy (Wintersleep) and his brother Michael have self released an album under the monikor Postdata. It's been getting a lot of positivecritical reaction - judge for yourself. Here's a video and MP3 of the song "Tobias Grey" performed with acoustic guitar, cello and vocals.
"Tobias Grey"
What is Postdata?
"These are my grandparents. They passed away two years ago and left me thirty or forty pieces of songs in a series of dreams, not Coleridge-esque opium dreams though unfortunately, just regular dreams. Kinda sad dreams. This is for them.
This is their daughter, my mother. I call her mom though, not mother. This is for her.
This is my father. Sometimes he feels left out. This is for you too dad.
This is my stomach.
This is me.
I started working on this record a couple of years ago at my parents' house in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia with my brother Michael.
This is Michael.
We had a little too much time on our hands. Some scotch too. We wanted to make a present for mom. She'd had a tough year. With little preparation (a laptop, no microphones, click tracks, or even tuners come to think of it), we recorded about 12 ideas and we went our separate ways.
Eight months later we found a free weekend in Halifax and tried the same thing, reworking a cluster of songs from the first session and adding four extra songs to the workload. We used the same laptop, but this time we rented actual, real microphones and we used click tracks for a few songs and tuners for the most part. We think. Maybe a little less scotch this time around.
Some of the songs turned out to be fuller and more mature after a second take, better than expected. Other songs maybe didn't quite hit the mark. But the recording as a whole, the half-finished, early conception somewhat fragmented material, seems to do something quite nice."
Hope you like it. - Paul Murphy

New Material From Titus Andronicus
Titus Andronicus will release The Monitor March 9th on XL Recordings. The Civil War themed album features guest appearances by members of The Hold Steady, Wye Oak, Vivian Girls and Ponytail. It features artwork by Nolen Strals (vocalist of Double Dagger), and was produced and engineered by Kevin McMahon (Pussy Cats by the Walkmen, Son of the Tiger by the Big Sleep, and Promises Promises by Die! Die! Die!).
What does the record sound like? Well, theres a lengthy tome written by Patrick Stickles, but my favorite part of it is "Blah blah blah Springsteen blah blah blah beer blah blah blah beard blah blah blah Shakespeare yadda yadda yadda Seinfeild blah blah blah Conor Oberst in a vat of acid blah blah blah books."
Titus Andronicus has done some regrouping and now consists of Patrick Stickles (vocals, guitar, harmonica), Ian Graetzer (bass), Amy Klein (Guitar, Violin), David Robbins (Keyboard and Guitar), and Eric Harm (drums, vocals).
The song “Four Score And Seven” clocks in at 8:39, so it's been broken into two parts for listeners with ADD.
Part One
Part Two
The band is holding a record-release show at Bowery Ballroom in NYC on March 6thalong with Parts and Labor and the Babies.
Here's a self titled track from the first album:

“George was pretty damn eclectic as a kid,” says Tom Van Buskirk, referring to his bandmate/cousin George Langford. “I was more of a snob, growing up on the Beatles and classical music. Like I didn’t get into Nirvana until after MTV Unplugged came out. I’m always late to the party.” Langford spoke about their aesthetic stating, “I love making music that has flaws and human fingerprints all over it. There’s also that grey area where you can’t tell what’s a sample, although it leaves you wanting to say, ‘Hey, I did that!’” But what's their sound? Langford says "The minute I start working in one style, I get distracted and want to work on another one. We kinda gave up on finding our ’sound’ years ago.”

New Release Alert
Band: Everbody Was in the French Resistance... Now
Album: Fixin' The Charts
Okay, so I haven't been excited by any new music. Then I read that Eddie Argos (Art Brut) joined forces with Dyan Valdes (The Blood Arm) forming the superpmegafantastical force of nature that is Everybody Was in The French Resistance ...Now. And my nipples were aflame with delight.
The band is currently touring across the pond, but dates for the U.S. should be announced shortly (as opposed to longly). Their album Fixin' the Charts was released in the U.K. last week, and will be available here February 16.
While researching a piece I'm writing, (and pissing about on the internet,) I realized I've been a musical Rip Van Winkle. And we all know how embarrassing that can be, don't we? So in case you've also missed out on free Christmas downloads from the hilarious Argos project Glam Chops, consider this a belated Xmas gift from me to you. And a word from the man himself...
I finally came into possession of an old guitar someone had given me at a nightclub in San Francisco awhile back; Eric Drew Feldman had been holding it for me there on Haight Street. He convinced me that it looked cool (it was black) and had been given in the spirit of benevolence. Every time I picked it up a nice chord came out and so I lovingly cleaned it with red wine in the dressing room the following night and began to write. I told the tour manager that we would drive in my Cadillac directly to a recording studio in Los Angeles (and could he book one, oh, and a rhythm section, too?) from the gig in San Luis Obispo which would put us at the studio at about 4am. It all happened according to plan and we cut the initial tracks there in the wee hours over a few days, and then moved on to an equally haunted studio in London and Eric Drew Feldman joined us there and we finished the record in St. John's Wood. Like I said the studio was haunted and I wrote many a couplet by candlelight in the studio accommodation, slept very little, and only felt the need to get the fuck out of there fast on the last night. The spirits had not ever bothered me, other than low drama moral support, but I was informed that they had heard enough and it was time to move on; plus I had a gig in Ireland.
When I was a boy the plant we boys called a fern was code for vagina, and to this day I love fern plants. In my heart the vagina is almost everything, and almost everything else could be summed up in what cock and seed have to offer; and everything else? The love of the father, dead or alive, the pain of too much pleasure, till death do us part, the voice of another song man from the other side, with or without God, Teri and the Possibilities, where ever you may be, the smell of sex in the air, seduced, slain, on my knees in prayer, sucking at the only thing that matters, my own personal Meret Oppenheim, I am Man Ray and I want you and to be all the way inside you, the cameras whirring as we put some elbow grease into the scene, the audience watching us in the dark.

Amanda Palmer, Jason Webley, and Evelyn Evelyn
Evelyn Evelyn - the world's only conjoined-twin singer-songwriter duo. (Amanda Palmer and Jason Webley perform and record as Evelyn Evelyn).
"Have You Seen My Sister Evelyn" free mp3 here.
There's no time for me to write up my own piece including all of the vital information - so I am posting the press releases.
Press release #1
Ladies and Gents:
We are very excited (and slightly nervous) to introduce to you two
young ladies who we believe to be one of the most talented new
songwriting duos in the music business today.
There has been a lot of speculation and hearsay about the Evelyn
twins, no doubt prompted by their unique physical condition, but we
sincerely hope that you will listen to their material and weigh it by
its own merits, which we believe to be many.
It's been a very long and often difficult road to create this record.
But throughout the past three years, the twins' sheer talent and the
bravery they've shown in undertaking such a project have kept us all
inspired.
We are overjoyed to finally share their wonderful, unique songs and

Press release #2
Discovered and launched by punk-cabaret queen Amanda Palmer (The Dresden Dolls) and endless minstrel Jason Webley, Evelyn Evelyn is one of the most anticipated acts of 2010. After three full years in the studio, the Evelyn sisters are gearing up for a world tour in support of their debut album which hits the shelves on March 30th on Eleven Records.
Epic in scope and production, the twelve tracks on "Evelyn Evelyn" showcase the twins' uncanny talent and versatility as musicians. With a background in circus performance and a wide, bizarre range of influences, the twins compose original timeless songs full of humor, sadness, and double entendre.
Rather than being limited by their unique physical condition, the Evelyn sisters prove that two heads are indeed better than one. Audiences will marvel at the twins as they dexterously perform their original compositions on piano, guitar, ukulele, accordion and even drums.
"When I first heard their songs, I was astounded at the sheer, raw talent and super-clever songwriting," says Palmer. "But when I found out they were actually conjoined twins who had spent their lives trapped in the circus industry, I wanted to help them reach a new audience."
These songs, which could be at home in a lost Tim Burton movie or a warped sequel to the Rocky Horror Picture Show, flash seamlessly through styles, eras, and genres. With lyrics that hearken back to simpler times, the twins' vocals are reminiscent of a ghostly counterpart to the Andrews Sisters. Encompassing everything from old-school dancehall to new-school indie show tunes, their songs range from the country-tinged "You Only Want Me 'Cause You Want My Sister" to an utterly heartbreaking ukulele rendition of Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart."
Other notable tracks include a ragtime song called "Have You Seen My Sister, Evelyn?", the child-friendly "Elephant Elephant", and their commentary on the loneliness of online social networking - an anthemic 80's power ballad entitled "My Space". The latter features gang vocals recorded by many of the twins' supportive friends, including "Weird Al" Yankovic, Andrew W.K., Amanda's recent fiancé Neil Gaiman, twin comrades Tegan and Sara Quin, Gerard Way, Frances Bean Cobain and many others.
All involved parties are crossing their fingers and toes in hopes that the world will not only accept these astonishingly unique young ladies, but embrace them with warm, open arms.
"We're all just really proud of them. I think people are going to love them, and we are excited to see how the twins react to performing in a climate where people are more receptive and respectful than they were in the circus," says Webley who co-produced the sisters' album.
..................
ABOUT THE TWINS:
Lyn and Eva Neville were born in September of 1985 on a small farm in Western Kansas. The girls are Parapagus Tripus Dibrachius twins, conjoined at the side and sharing between them three legs, two arms, two hearts, three lungs, and a single liver. Orphaned when their mother died in labor, little is known about their early life until 1996 when they made their first public appearance with Dillard and Fullerton's Traveling Circus. It was here that the "Evelyn" sisters developed their love of song and performance.
Unsatisfied with the grind of circus life, at the age of nineteen the twins decided to explore a solo career. It was then that they were discovered by Amanda Palmer and Jason Webley, who heard the twins' music on MySpace. Webley and Palmer encouraged the twins and offered to help them record a proper album.
The album will be accompanied by a full US and European tour and - later this year - a graphic novel about the twins' inspiring life, illustrated by Cynthia von Buhler and published by Dark Horse Press.
Amanda Palmer and Jason Webley (along with their legion of supportive fans) will be traveling with and musically supporting the sisters on their ambitious world tour of Europe and North America.

But throughout the past three years, the twins' sheer talent and the
bravery they've shown in undertaking such a project have kept us all
inspired.
We are overjoyed to finally share their wonderful, unique songs and
story with the rest of the world, and we hope you will join us in
celebrating this amazing new record.

Arcadia So Red The Rose Reissue
Credibility be damned - I love this album.
Arcadia So Red The Rose – 2 CD + DVD
February 1st, 2010
Arcadia So Red The Rose – 2 CD + DVD
EMI Catalogue Cat No: 606 6812
Arcadia were formed by three members of Duran Duran, Simon Le Bon, Nick Rhodes and Roger Taylor. They released one album ‘So Red The Rose’, which went Platinum, and reached #30 in the UK & #23 in the US. The album featured four singles, ‘Goodbye Is Forever’, ‘The Promise’, ‘The Flame’, and UK/US Top 10 hit, ‘Election Day’.
Along with three Duran Duran members, there was also a wide range of famous guests on ‘So Red The Rose’ including; David Gilmour, Sting (backing vocals on ‘The Promise’), Herbie Hancock & Grace Jones (spoken word on ‘The Flame’ & ‘Election Day’).
The additional DVD was originally released on VHS in 1987. It follows the filming of five clips from the album ‘So Red The Rose’ & the fascinating combination of directors, locations, behind the scene footage & photographic montages which come together to give an insight into the world of video production. The collection of videos including Arcadia’s first single ‘Election Day’ are shown in full, including Dean Chamberlain’s rarely seen interpretation of the song ‘Missing’.
All Music Guide describe ‘So Red The Rose’ as “the best album Duran never made”.
