Jack White Is a Douchebag (I didn't Say It)

I bet those who regularly read this blog, and or know me personally are in shock that I typed that, but really I'm referring to someone else's opinion. As I was discussing my never ending appreciation for Jack White's music last night my friend proclaimed "Maybe, but that guy's a douchebag." Apparently many people besides my friend and probably Jason Stollsteimer (Von Bondies) seem to think so and have become particularly vocal about this opinion following White's recent Rolling Stone interview. Vocal enough to anonamously release this video: "Jack White is a Douchebag" White posted an apology to many people who may have been hurt by the recent piece in Rolling Stone Magazine, ( whose writers I collectively refer to as "douchebags"), however the full apology which was allegedly posted on White's Facebook seems to have disappeared. Parts of the message can be found on the sites of various sycophantic vultures. "Jack White Is a Douchebag" was allegedly recorded by (depending upon where you look) an anonymous couple on vacation, or by Jack Kennedy and the Douchebags, (or - just my speculation - possibly Black Keys Dan Auerbach)? I'd love to present White's response to what I consider this neither very funny nor catchy anonymous jab, but he's kind of a douchebag in that he doesn't give interviews to DIY blogs. This pettiness reminds me to remind you to pick up White's fantastic new album Lazaretto.

Criterion Releases Jacques Demy Collection

Criterion Releases Jacques Demy Collection From Criterion: French director Jacques Demy didn’t just make movies—he created an entire cinematic world. Demy launched his glorious feature film making career in the sixties, a decade of astonishing invention in his national cinema. He stood out from the crowd of his fellow New Wavers, however, by filtering his self-conscious formalism through deeply emotional storytelling. Fate and coincidence, doomed love, and storybook romance surface throughout his films, many of which are further united by the intersecting lives of characters who appear or are referenced across titles. The works collected here—made from the sixties to the eighties and ranging from musical to melodrama to fantasia—are triumphs of visual and sound design, camera work, and music, and they are galvanized by the great stars of French cinema at their centers, including Anouk, Aimée, Catherine Deneuve, and Jeanne Moreau. Collector’s Set Includes: Lola, Bay of Angels, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Young Girls of Rochefort, Donkey Skin, and Une Chambre En Ville. New 2K digital restorations of all six films, with uncompressed monaural soundtracks on the Blu-rays of Lola and Bay of Angels and 5.1 or 2.0 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks on the Blu-rays of The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, The Young Girls of Rochefort, Donkey Skin, and Une chambre en ville Two documentaries by filmmaker Agnès Varda: The World of Jacques Demy (1995) and The Young Girls Turn 25 (1993) Four short films by director Jacques Demy: Les horizons morts (1951), Le sabotier du Val de Loire (1956), Ars (1959), and La luxure (1962) Jacques Demy, A to Z, a new visual essay by critic James Quandt Archival interviews with Demy, composer Michel Legrand, and actors Jeanne Moreau, Catherine Deneuve, Jean Marais, and Jacques Perrin Once Upon a Time . . . “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg,” a 2008 documentary Episode from Behind the Screen, a 1966 series about the making of Young Girls “Donkey Skin” Illustrated, a 2008 program on the many versions of Charles Perrault’s fairy tale “Donkey Skin” and the Thinkers, a 2008 program featuring critic Camille Tabouley New conversation between Demy biographer Jean-Pierre Berthomé and costume designer Jacqueline Moreau New interviews with journalist Marie Colmant and film scholar Rodney Hill Archival audio Q&A with Demy Archival audio interviews with Legrand and Deneuve Interview with actor Anouk Aimée from 2012, conducted by Varda Interview with Varda from 2012 on the origin of Lola’s song Restoration demonstrations for Lola, Bay of Angels, Umbrellas, and Une chambre PLUS: A booklet featuring essays by critics Ginette Vincendeau, Terrence Rafferty, Jim Ridley, Jonathan Rosenbaum, Anne E. Jack White Lazaretto Concert Dates & NPR Streaming Show

Jack White LAZARETTO Concert Tonight As I'm about to crack the seal on the just released Jack White Lazaretto (Ultra Lp), I'm reminded NPR will present White in concert tonight. You may watch a live video webcast from the historic Fonda Theater in Hollywood, beginning at approximately 9:45 p.m. PT (12:45 a.m. ET). Just log onto NPR.com or click here directly. Tomorrow jack will appear on Conan (TBS at 11pm ET/10pm CT). Now back to my giddy childlike glee as I crack the outer seal, grab the wax and rotate the album to see those rainbow grooves in the black vinyl that have filled me with excitement and wonder since I first discovered the power of music. The fact that this particular album plays at 45 33 and 78, the paper label is playable, and this flat edged album provides a holographic image of an angel as it spins on the turntable is entirely another matter. Lazaretto Ultra Lp Features: - 180 gram vinyl - 2 vinyl-only hidden tracks hidden beneath the center labels - 1 hidden track plays at 78 RPM, one plays at 45 RPM, making this a 3-speed record - Side A plays from the inside out - Dual-groove technology: plays an electric or acoustic intro for “Just One Drink” depending on where needle is dropped. The grooves meet for the body of the song. - Matte finish on Side B, giving the appearance of an un-played 78 RPM record - Both sides end with locked grooves - Vinyl pressed in seldom-used flat-edged format - Dead wax area on Side A contains a hand-etched hologram by Tristan Duke of Infinity Light Science, the first of its kind on a vinyl record - Absolutely zero compression used during recording, mixing and mastering - Different running order from the CD/digital version - LP utilizes some mixes different from those used on CD and digital version Jack White LAZARETTO Tour Dates: Date City Venue Country 06/10/14 Los Angeles The Fonda Theatre United States With Very Special Guests: Cold War Kids Sold Out 06/11/14 Los Angeles The Mayan United States With Very Special Guests: Cold War Kids Sold Out 06/12/14 Pomona The Fox Theater United States With Very Special Guests: Cold War Kids Sold Out 06/14/14 Manchester Bonnaroo United States Age restrictions: All Ages. 06/25/14 - 06/29/14 Somerset Glastonbury United Kingdom Time: 10:00am. 06/26/14 Dublin Royal Hospital Kilmainham Ireland Time: 8:00pm. David Bowie Is Exhibit

The David Bowie Is exhibit at The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago will be open to the public from September 23 2014 to January 4, 2015. " The exhibition is said to feature more than 300 objects, including photography, album artwork, handwritten lyrics, original fashions, set designs, and rare performance material from the past five decades from the David Bowie Archive. On display are more than 60 stage creations including Ziggy Stardust bodysuits (1972) designed by Freddie Buretti; Kansai Yamamoto's flamboyant attire for the Aladdin Sane tour (1973); and the Union Jack coat designed by Bowie and Alexander McQueen for the Earthling album cover (1997). Also on view is photography by Brian Duffy, Terry O'Neill, and Masayoshi Sukita; album sleeve artwork by Guy Peellaert and Edward Bell; cover proofs by Barnbrook for the latest album The Next Day (2013); visual excerpts from films and live performances, including The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976) and Saturday Night Live (1979); music videos such as Boys Keep Swinging (1979) and Let's Dance (1983); and set designs created for the Diamond Dogs tour (1974). Alongside these are more personal items such as never-before-seen storyboards, handwritten set lists and lyrics, as well as some of Bowie's own sketches, musical scores, and writings, revealing the evolution of his creative ideas. MCA Curator Michael Darling says, "This exhibition portrays an artist in control of his practice who recognizes that the smallest details contribute to the overall aesthetic experience of the audience. Bowie's peerless understanding of the importance of image cultivation and reinvention make him a comfortable fit with others in the MCA Collection and exhibition history, such as Cindy Sherman and Andy Warhol--and similar to many artists working today, he has never limited himself to one area of cultural production. "Bowie Superfan tickets" are $100.00 and guarantee entry to David Bowie Is and general admission to all other MCA exhibits for the day of said ticket. This offer is available through June 10 via the MCA's David Bowie hotline at 312-397-4068, Monday through Friday 10 am - 4 pm (CST). Tickets are limited to eight per person. Regular tickets for David Bowie is are $25, which also includes general museum admission and are available July 31. This is the only exhibit that will take place in America. The MCA has extended hours during the exhibition: Mondays: CLOSED Tuesdays: 10 am - 8 pm Wednesdays: 10 am - 5 pm Thursdays: 10 am - 8 pm Fridays: 10 am - 10 pm Saturdays and Sundays: 9 am - 6 pm

The Muffs "Up Down and Around" & Whoop De Doo

"Up Down and Around" the first single from the Muffs must own forthcoming album Whoop De Doo (July 29) will be available for sale at iTunes, Amazon, etc and available on streaming services June 17. Do yourself a favor and prepare to fork out the dough for the full length album, because really - would I steer you wrong? Every track is a unique rock&roll gem. If you don't know The Muffs you would never know this album isn't a best- of compilation, but then every Muffs album plays like a "best of" album. That's a reputation to live up to and they do it (seemingly) with ease and enough hooks to make any band say "I wish we wrote that song." Welcome back The Muffs! How we've missed your snotty snarly growl, tight rhythms, pop perfection, & your punk rock energy. When Courtney Love quipped recently that she's the only one still "doing it" she forgot a few people, but never underestimate Kim Shattuck who does it right every time. Since there's no video yet I'll post "Really Really Happy" from The Muffs album of the same name which was released by Five Foot Two Records (owned by Charlotte Caffey and Anna Waronker).

Soaked In Bleach (Kurt Cobain Movie)

Soaked In Bleach Release Date: 2014 Director: Benjamin Statler Cast: Daniel Roebuck, August Emerson, Sarah Scott Genre: Drama Country: USA More than twenty years after the death / tragic loss of Kurt Cobain many still question the Seattle Police Department's case conclusion of suicide. In opposition to the suicide ruling Soaked In Bleach is the second film (following director Nick Broomfield's Kurt and Courtney) to question "Who Killed Kurt Cobain?" As with Broomfield's film many in #SIB question possible motives of Cobain's widow Courtney Love. New facts observations and opinions are allegedly revealed in this forthcoming film. Specific release dates have yet to be announced. Born: Kurt Donald Cobain February 20, 1967 (Aberdeen, Washington, USA) Died: April 5, 1994 (Seattle, Washington, USA) Cobain was 27 years old. Synopsis provided by director Benjamin Statler: Soaked In Bleach reveals the events behind Kurt Cobain's death as seen through the eyes of Tom Grant, the private investigator that was hired by Courtney Love in 1994 to track down her missing husband (Kurt Cobain) only days before his deceased body was found at their Seattle home. Cobain's death was ruled a suicide by the police (a reported self-inflicted gunshot wound), but doubts have circulated for twenty years as to the legitimacy of this ruling, especially due to the work of Mr. Grant, a former L.A. County Sheriff's detective, who did his own investigation and determined there was significant empirical and circumstantial evidence to conclude that foul play could very well have occurred. The film develops as a narrative mystery with cinematic re-creations, interviews with key experts and witnesses and the examination of official artifacts from the 1994 case.

Kim Gordon is cooler than you. Probably you too. Definitely me. Kim Gordon does her own heartfelt and fucking fearless interpretation of Nirvana's "Aneurysm" at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2014) with a shout out to Frances "Bean" Cobain.

New Robyn Hitchcock Album and Interview

Look out for a new Robyn Hitchcock compilation album The Man Upstairs via Yep Roc August 26. Here's a taste of what's to come as Hitchcock covers "The Ghost In You" (originally recorded by The Psychedelic Furs). The album art was done by fellow musician Gillian Welch. The Man Upstairs brings Hitchcock together with producer Joe Boyd (Nick Drake, Fairport Convention) and was mixed and recorded in six days. It includes a Roxy Music cover, new material, and older rarities. Boyd suggested what he called "a Judy Collins album such as Elektra would have released in 1967," meaning "part well-known favorites, personal discoveries, and part originals." In addition to The Psychedelic Furs, Hitchcock provides his take on Roxy Music's "To Turn You On," and The Doors' "The Crystal Ship." Also included are lesser known tracks from contemporaries such as "Ferries" by I Was a King (featuring the Norwegian combos Anne Lise Frøkedal contributing guitar and vocal harmonies), and Grant-Lee Phillips "Don't Look Down." For his part Hitchcock seems amply pleased with the Boyd collaboration commenting, "I've always wanted to make a folk record produced by Joe Boyd and now I have. Thank you, universe!" Two intimate gigs have been scheduled: June 20th at Santa Monica's famous McCabe's Guitar Shop and Seattle's Columbia City Theater on June 23rd. North American Tour dates should be announced shortly. A 4th grade music class from Hillsborough, NC, interviewed Hitchcock for their weekly WOCS podcast. Here's an excerpt:
