The Dead Weather "Will There Be Enough Water"

This is a video of The Dead Weather pressing the new music. They've done a bit of a Wonka on us all and included 5 photostrips in cds. (Why not vinyl)? The recipients of each photostrip will receive a guided tour of Third Man Records. No other information has been provided. Watch the video below:

Dappled Cities Release Zounds

“It’s as daggy and classy, cunning and futuristic, as us!” - Dappled Cities

Dappled Cities sophomore record, Zounds, will be available via Dangerbird Records, September 15th. The first single, "The Price" is described as "political disco." And the bands longest track to date, "THe Night Is Young At Heart" clocks in at six minutes. What gives with the prog rock length? Band member Dave Rennick explains, “Big, long, aggressive, weird: an in-ya-face sound people are either going to love or hate – and that’s the mark of a great song, isn’t it?”

Trivia: A $40.00 "build-it-yourself" cardboard synthesiser from Japan was used on all 12 songs.

Bio:
The band, originally called Periwinkle, formed in 1997 when 15 year-olds David Rennick and Hugh Boyce were joined by Alex Moore and English born Tim Derricourt. Their first album, A Smile (released in 2004 under the new moniker - Dappled Cities Fly), was a home-recorded, independent hit in Australia, and its tracks were later remixed as A Crooked Smile EP by the likes of an emerging Wolfmother and Spod.

The band’s sophomore effort Granddance was a grandiose record full of oldeworld ideas and cutting-edge sonics (& their first platter on the Dangerbird label), which was uncoiled to mass acclaim in 2006. The following two years were spent touring the US with the likes of The Fratellis and Tokyo Police Club, with fiery forays home riding shotgun to silverchair, Modest Mouse and LCD Soundsystem.

Press:
"As stripped-down Dappled Cities instrumentation can get, Granddance swells with a full-bodied atmosphere that envelops every chord". - Spin

Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot Discovery To Benefit Oxfam America

Below is the unedited press release regarding the new Discovery album (blogged previously here) offered one week early to benefit Oxfam America.

New York, NY (June 30, 2009) – Discovery, the band comprised of Rostam Batmanglij (Vampire Weekend) and Wes Miles (Ra Ra Riot) have just released their highly anticipated debut as part of Amie Street’s Download To Make A Difference campaign.

LP is now available one week early exclusively on AmieStreet.com at the sale price of $8 in an effort by the group to raise money for Oxfam America.

“I am thrilled to have Oxfam be a part of this release,” said Miles. “Oxfam's focus on broad advocacy and local relief for the impoverished is inspiring and I hope our support brings more awareness about their projects and goals.”

For each album sold, AmieStreet.com and XL Recordings are donating $2 to Oxfam America (www.oxfamamerica.org), an international relief and development organization that creates lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice. Together with individuals and local groups in more than 100 countries, Oxfam saves lives, helps people overcome poverty, and fights for social justice.

Discovery is the recording project of Batmanglij and Miles, friends who began recording together in the summer of 2005. One year later they had committed themselves to their respective bands, Vampire Weekend and Ra Ra Riot, but nonetheless continued to record together when they both found themselves in the same city. The project is many things: it’s partly an attempt to realize Wes’s concept of a band where everyone plays synthesizers, and of Rostam’s concept for an album where handclaps keep the backbeat instead of snare drums.

It’s an embrace and also a commentary on the pop music of the past decade, of booming 808 bass and jittery sixteenth note high-hats. If soul music is secularized, sexualized gospel, Discovery is an attempt to see if soul music can survive being plasticized, roboticized, quantized, chopped, and finally, screwed. The album features Rostam and Wes each singing half the songs and guest vocals from Ezra Koenig (Vampire Weekend) and Angel Deradoorian (Dirty Projectors).

The exclusive release marks the seventh major release for AmieStreet.com's Download To Make A Difference campaign, which has raised tens of thousands of dollars for organizations like the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, The Food Bank For New York City, and the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation since its launch ten months ago.

LP is released by XL Recordings (Sigur Rós, Adele, Vampire Weekend). To download the fantastic new album and support Oxfam America go to: http://amiestreet.com/music/discovery/lp

About Playing for Change

Playing for Change began a decade ago, the brainchild of Grammy-winning music producer and engineer Mark Johnson. In 1998 Mark teamed with producer Whitney Kronke Burditt to create the award-winning Playing for Change: A Cinematic Discovery of Street Music (2004). The relationship between Playing for Change and Hear Music (the joint venture between Concord and Starbucks) was facilitated by legendary television producer Norman Lear, owner of Concord Music Group.

Seeing great need in many of the locations where the crew filmed and recorded inspired PFC to establish the Playing for Change Foundation, a distinct non-profit entity which provides resources - including facilities, technology, musical instruments and education - to musicians and their communities. The Foundation's first project, the Ntonga Music School in South Africa, was completed in January 2009. Its second, the Mehlo Arts Center in Johannesburg, will open later in 2009.

Playing for Change is headquartered in Los Angeles. For more information, please visit the website: www.PlayingForChange.com.

(Personally, I don't think they sound a whit like Adam, but I do hear a tiny Bow Wow Wow similarity). The music is more world beat, and less new wave pirate/highwayman/dandy with a bump n' grind.

R.E.M. Release Digi-EP

R.E.M. will release a four song live digi-EP, Reckoning Songs From The Olympia July 7. The tracks were recorded during rehearsals at Dublin's Olympia Theatre, and include "Harborcoat,"
"Letter Never Sent," "Second Guessing," and "Pretty Persuasion," This EP precedes the upcoming full length album, R.E.M. Live at the Olympia, slated for release this fall.

Unedited press release info for R.E.M. Live at the Olympia:
n October, Warner Bros. will release R.E.M. Live From the Olympia, a special 2-CD set featuring songs from R.E.M.'s storied five-night stint at the Olympia in Dublin in the summer of 2007. The live sessions, produced by the acclaimed Jacknife Lee, capture the energy and excitement surrounding R.E.M.'s so-called "experiment in terror," an unprecedented move in the band's career, in which they debuted and simultaneously ironed out several new tracks each night before sold-out audiences. Eleven of the tracks would come to form the basis of ACCELERATE, R.E.M.'S 14th studio record which later shot straight to number one in 7 countries; the live sessions, carefully referred to by the band throughout as "working rehearsals" rather than shows in the conventional sense, also included an amazing array of songs from the band's impressive back catalog--"olive branches" in Michael's parlance--from some of the band's earliest albums: Murmur, Reckoning, Fables of the Reconstruction, Lifes Rich Pageant, and Document.

Please stay tuned to remhq.com for more on this highly-anticipated release.

Hugh Cornwell (The Stranglers) Releases New Album

Hugh Cornwell, the original frontman for The Stranglers will release a new album, Hooverdam, September 8. If you visit www.hughcornwell.com, you may download the music free of charge.

Taken directly from the press release:
“Everything that’s ever been recorded or filmed is now online and free – whether the copyright owners like it or not, and any work of artists that is honest – either from decades ago or right now – has intellectual value that will always translate into monetary value,” explains Charles Kennedy, head of Invisible Hands Music. This is a great record, made without ProTools, AutoTune, or any other piece of performance-enhancing stuff. It comes from the heart of a great thinker, writer and musician, and will be shared and listened to for decades to come. Physical copies will be available on vinyl and as a triple-sleeved digi-pak CD/DVD, which will contain Hugh’s film “Blueprint,” featuring live studio performance inter-spliced with an interview with Hugh at the Tate Gallery in London. The Clientele

The Clientele, kids who were into Galaxie 500, and the psyche rock of Love and The Zonbie, formed and played together while they were in school. According to singer, Alasdair MacLean, they decided collectively that it was "OK to be influenced by Surrealist poetry but not OK to have any shouting or blues guitar solos."

The band released some 7" singles at the end of the ninetees, and their debut Suburban Light, was released in time for the millenium. THe bands next album, The Violet Hour, was released in '03. Strange Geometry followed in '05, and the Mark Never and Brian O'Shaughnessy (My Bloody Valentine, Primal Scream), produced God Save the Clientele came two years after that.

The Clientele's new album, Bonfires On The Heath, to be released October 6, is described as a return to their roots mixed with English folk, and Bossa Nova elements. (How that is a return to their roots - I'm not sure).

The band will be performing July 19 @ Brooklyn's Music Hall Of Williamsburg and later this summer in Chapel Hill @ Merge XX. For more information visit:http://www.myspace.com/theclienteleofficial

"It's the Sunday marked by nightingales
singing in the tender green woods
the boredom of little girls staring at a cage
a canary flutters around in
while in the empty street
the sun slowly moves its thin line
along the hot sidewalk
We'll cross other lines
Never never anyone but you
And I alone alone alone
like withered ivy in suburban gardens
alone like glass
And you, never anyone but you."

WILLIAM KUNSTLER: DISTRUBING THE UNIVERSE
The late civil rights attorney William Kunstler was one of the most famous and controversial lawyers of the 20th century. He represented civil rights and anti-war activists, as well as accused terrorists and murders. In the 1960s and 70s, Kunstler fought for civil rights with Martin Luther King Jr., and represented activists protesting the Vietnam war. When the inmates took over Attica prison, or Native Americans stood up to the federal government at Wounded Knee, they asked Kunstler to be their lawyer. To his daughters, it seemed that he was at the center of everything important that had ever happened. But when they were growing up, Kunstler represented some of the most unpopular members of society: people accused of rape, terrorism, organized crime and cop killing.

Drug Rug Tour Dates, New Release, and Me Being Overtired

Drug Rug may have been called critic's darlings. They may be boyfriend and girlfriend. They might have been song of the day on NPR, but how would I know. Why ask me? Mind your own business!

So, you may be asking yourself, "What's new with Drug Rug?" Well, luckily I can tell you. Keith Morris of GTFU Radio has called the "The Psychedelic Jonas Brothers," but I have no idea what that means. So let me break it down for us simple folk. Thomas Allen and Sarah Cronin met in 2006, they drank some whiskey, and crooned together with an old guitar. (It all sounds pretty romantic, huh). Their songs are of the homespun tale telling type. (How's that for alliteration)? You know, the type of duo you want around for your next weenie roast.

The band's self titled debut garnered them raves with the types of people whom we should listen to about these things. The sort of people who get paid to know more than we do. Paint the Fence Invisible
, recorded in the Catskills, is soon to be released.

“Drug Rug is the boyfriend/girlfriend duo of Sarah Cronin and Thomas Allen. They obviously haven't been together that long because the songs are still so happy and shiny.” Like a lot of bands, it's The Byrds and Beach Boys meet the indie stylings of today.” - My Old Kentucky Blog

Ólöf Arnalds Opening For Blonde Redhead

Brooklyn Vegan:
“....crowd who did not want to let her leave the stage, especially after the amazing Nina Simone cover she closed her set with. Earlier she covered Springsteen.”

Earfarm:
“....mesmerizing performance by Ólöf Arnalds...alternated between acoustic guitar, a smaller toy acoustic guitar, and an even smaller 8-string ukulele. On stage, she was witty and full of banter as she gave background tidbits on songs she sang in her native Icelandic, with an emotive, swooping voice that rang clear on the high notes. The apex of the night was the Hank Williams cover that elicited a rousing approval from the enraptured crowd.

The Dodos To Release Time To Die

The Dodos will release their third album, Time To Die on Sept 15th via Frenchkiss Records. The album was produced by Phil EK (Built To Spill, Fleet Foxes, The Shins)

“I’m glad that we were able to keep things simple on this record,” says Long, “Because when your band gets a little popular, there’s this tendency to say things like, ‘Let’s add an orchestra on this one!” That works for some people, but it would detract from this band.”

“The vibraphone is pretty crazy and loud,” says Long, “and if you put it through some effects, you can make it sound like a guitar or synthesizer. It still has that element of something you’re hitting, though, which is central to how Logan and I play our instruments.”

“After Visiter, we had a lot of options for which direction to go,” says Long, “But I knew we wanted to make a rock record. Being an acoustic band—primarily, at least—sort of works against this idea, but Phil’s production showcased that side of our band.”

Time To Die:
1. Small Deaths
2. Longform
3. Fables
4. The Strums
5. This Is A Business
6. Two Medicines
7. Troll Nacht
8. Acorn Factory
9. Time To Die

The Prids Tribute Album

“The Prids are not only a really good band but they are also very nice people. They are all lucky to be alive after their van took a turn for the worse last year. They are what is good about independent music. They are getting out there and bringing a unique and worthwhile thing to their audience. This is what it's all about.” – Henry Rollins

“The best thing in the musician world is loving a band's music and meeting them and finding out they are not only beautiful and wonderful people but forming a long lasting friendship with them. The Prids' music is as beautiful and wonderful as they are. It shows on Dots To Connect. All the bands that contributed played the songs as fans and friends wanting to help, not just as musicians. Beautiful people making beautiful music isn't as common as you might think. It's a rarity and I am glad The Prids will still fill the world with theirs.” – Brett Nelson, Built to Spill / Suffocation Keep

Dots To Connect, a tribute album for The Prids, is now available on on five03 Records.

MCA Chicago Performance Season

Nora Chipaumire with Thomas Mapfumo and The Blacks Unlimited:
lions will roar, swans will fly, angels will wrestle heaven, rains will break: gukurahundi
October 1, 3-4, 2009

As exiles from Zimbabwe, dancer/choreographer Nora Chipaumire and master musician and poet Thomas Mapfumo challenge the accepted African branding - war-torn, tribal, and exotic. Known as the "Lion of Zimbabwe," Mapfumo created and made popular the Chimurenga style of Shona music from Zimbabwe that mixes African rhythms and instruments with politically charged lyrics, which landed him in a Zimbabwean prison camp in 1979. Chipaumire, a contemporary dancer rooted in African traditions, fuses her powerful and raw movement with Mapfumo's music and incendiary writing to examine the migrant experience of Africa and the art of Zimbabwe over the course of that country's downward economic and political spiral.

Lucinda Childs: DANCE
October 15-17, 2009

Known for her minimal elegance, Lucinda Childs is a pioneer of the postmodern dance movement and a founding member of the Judson Dance Theater. Her landmark work DANCE, for which Childs was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship, is a collaboration with visionary contemporaries, composer Philip Glass and artist Sol LeWitt. Being reprised on its 30th anniversary, this production integrates Childs' polished choreography with LeWitt's black-and-white film, which is projected in front of the stage in perfect synchronization with the live dancers.

Philip Glass: An Evening of Solo Piano
October 16, 2009

One of the most influential composers of the 20th century, Philip Glass is an extraordinarily prolific figure known for his meditative and hypnotic musical scores. He has collaborated with Paul Simon, Linda Ronstadt, Yo-Yo Ma, Twyla Tharp, Allen Ginsberg, Woody Allen, David Bowie, and Chuck Close, among many others. In the past 25 years, Glass has composed more than 20 operas; eight symphonies; two piano concertos; string quartets; and soundtracks to films, including the Academy Award-winning motion picture The Hours, Martin Scorsese's Kundun, and Koyaanisqatsi. This program features an intimate evening of Glass performing from his growing body of work for solo piano.

The Hypocrites: Frankenstein
October 21 - November 1, 2009

In an adventurous retelling of Mary Shelley's classic novel, acclaimed director and The Hypocrites founder and artistic director Sean Graney combines live performance with the classic 1931 film with Boris Karloff. Graney's four-actor, multimedia, promenade production is timed well for Halloween and places the audience onstage amidst the actors and the film. This inventive play combines several historical versions of the gothic tale to craft a contemporary literary monster that captures the pure horror and chilling philosophy of the creation myth, wherein the creation ultimately destroys its creator.

Anna Halprin / Anne Collod & Guests:
parades & changes, replays
November 5, 7-8, 2009

French choreographer Anne Collod boldly re-creates Parades and Changes, the most famous production of American postmodern dance legend Anna Halprin. Utilizing a unique approach, Halprin writes dance scores, or instructions for the dancers on what to do, which allow the dancers to decide how they do it. In Parades and Changes, dancers perform several parades and rituals, including the ritual of dressing and undressing. When it premiered in New York City in 1965, the work was banned for its nudity. Collod's re-creation, parades & changes, replays, pays tribute to the original's enduringly modern motifs and features a cast of performers who are established choreographers and dancers in their own right.
Presented in tandem with the MCA exhibition of Daria Martin's film Minotaur.

Don Byron: The Music of Mickey Katz
November 14, 2009

For this concert, Don Byron gathers his original nine-member all-star band, including trumpeter Dave Douglas and pianist Uri Caine, for a revival of his groundbreaking 1993 recording, Don Byron Plays the Music of Mickey Katz. The performance is a faithful tribute to the campy wit and musical innovation of klezmer-style music by Mickey Katz, a touring and recording star of the 1950s, who entertained audiences with his virtuoso clarinet and wild pastiche of ethnic Jewish comedy. This program is presented in partnership with the Chicago Humanities Festival as part of this year's theme "Laughter."

International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE): Kaija Saariaho
November 19, 2009

Kaija Saariaho, a composer of immense imagination and one of the best-known female composers in the world, joins the intrepid International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) for a concert dedicated to her chamber music. Known for the lyrical, spiritual, and timeless qualities of her music, Saariaho spent years living like a musical hermit at the electronic music think tank IRCAM in Paris, an institute for scientific study about music and sound, and for the development of avant-garde electro-acoustical art music. Always adventurous in their collaborations, ICE is known for their exceptional talent, fearless choices, and for conquering the New York music scene while maintaining their base in Chicago.

Akram Khan Company & National Ballet of China: bahok
February 26-28, 2010

Acclaimed choreographer Akram Khan's newest work, bahok, named for a Bengali word meaning "carrier," explores the ways in which the body carries national identity and a sense of belonging. Culled from disparate cultures, traditions, and dance backgrounds - Chinese, Korean, Indian, South African, and Spanish - Khan's eight dancers play passengers stranded in the limbo of an airport or train station. As they try to communicate to share "the things they carry with them" - their experiences, their memories of home, and the dreams and aspirations that made them move - the rich mix of backgrounds push the boundaries of spoken and dance vocabularies. Award-winning composer and long-time collaborator Nitin Sawhney creates an original score for bahok.

The Seldoms with Fraser Taylor: Marchland
March 12-14, 2010

For Marchland, Chicago-based choreographer Carrie Hanson collaborates with visual and textile artist Fraser Taylor to create a new ensemble work about mark-making, endurance, traction, and borders. Hanson was inspired by Taylor's video, CREVICE, a frenetic animation and sound piece that he created by making minute drawings directly onto the surface of clear 16mm film, later capturing the projected film with digital video. Marchland combines video, sculpture, and costume design by Chicago fashion designer Lara Miller with idiosyncratic movement, mimicking the same flickering, erratic, and charged qualities of Taylor's video.

Young Jean Lee: The Shipment
March 26-28, 2010

One of the boldest voices in contemporary theater, playwright and director Young Jean Lee tackles the Black experience and African-American identity politics in her new play, The Shipment. For this work, Lee, a Korean American, challenged herself to create a "Black identity-politics show," addressing social norms that she herself finds uncomfortable. The result is a provocative and eclectic work, which includes song, dance, stand-up comedy, sketches, and a short drama, performed by five talented actors who show off Lee's acid wit and subversive style.

John Jasperse Company: Truth, Revised Histories, Wishful Thinking, and Flat Out Lies
April 9-11, 2010

Influential and innovative, American choreographer John Jasperse's newest work addresses belief systems, the relative nature of truth, and how we construct meaning in our lives. With a musical score by accomplished musician and electronica artist Hahn Rowe, performed by the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), Jasperse develops the visual design for this production. Known for rich content and a wry approach, Jasperse's choreography explores heresy, radical ideas, delusional thoughts, and just plain nonsense.

Nicole Mitchell: Intergalactic Beings
Early May 2010

Inspired by the seminal Afrofuturist, science-fiction writer Octavia Butler's Xenogenesis Trilogy, virtuosic flutist and composer Nicole Mitchell evokes a journey into the horrific unknown in the newest chapter of her Xenogenesis Project, Intergalactic Beings. Butler's alien abduction tale incorporates rape, racism, and slavery into a disturbing tale of survival. Mitchell's musical interpretation was written for her Black Earth Ensemble, an improvising chamber orchestra, and taps the emotional and surreal qualities of Butler's prose.

Yo! Majesty Kollaborations and Silly Quotations

And now some words from Andy..

The tracks on my new Sidtracked comp’ encapsulate special moments for me; it’s one of those albums, which as a DJ, is rooted in fun memories, each song having its own special significance attached to it. So, one moment you might imagine me sitting on top of a speaker at a 90’s warehouse party with legs dangling and fist in the air, or another in a various state of undress dancing in my living room (daydream at your own risk...).

Before I go on to discuss the album as a whole, I want to let you know this blog links to a 20 minute clip of the album (above), which is both a snapshot to give you a little musical taste and something to listen you as you read on below…

I didn't want to do something that demonstrated my love of either house or disco, I really wanted to feature both. Over the past year I have been spinning a lot of early 90’s stuff that playfully reworks disco songs; not so much re-edits, but rather original songs using samples. For example, I might be playing techno but you could hear Rockers Revenge in the mix, or Jimmy Bo Horne, or First Choice. This technique was the primary influence on how I approached the compilation.

I also wanted to include some music that I truly enjoy listening to outside of the dance floor. Records that have directly influenced my own song-writing process, such as Dr. Buzzard'’s and Ray Martinez, which made it onto the tracklist, as did the easy listening disco of Gino Soccio and the Rainbow Team who provide a wonderfully soulful finale.

Infact, music from across the western hemisphere is represented throughout the mix. A lot is culled from a time when Detroit and Chicago's influences resonated around the world, from the ‘EuroJack’ of WestBam and Fax Yourself to the ‘SanTranceDisco’ of Dubwise and Studio X. These are all songs that have contributed to my own musical story.

I also included a couple of songs from artists and friends I am inspired by today. In Flagranti are dancefloor visionaries who I have long been a fan of, so I snagged one of my favourites from their new album. Daniel Wang is another artist that I have been keenly aware of since my younger years. I appealed to him to provide something special for this record, and he kindly obliged, which I am most thankful for! Both of these artists are rooted in the consciousness of dance music's past, yet to my mind they seem armed and ready to forge ahead in ways that are still light-years beyond their present peers – I can never wait to hear new material from them!

And then, of course, there is New York. The new Hercules track counts as an NY bit I guess, plus Todd Terry shows up twice, both as himself and Sax, one of his many pseudonyms. His rough style of pop house remains one of my favourite to dance to.

Lastly I wanted to include my friends, who always ‘bring the party’. We get a bit of banter from each of them woven into the mix, which includes current singers, Aerea Negrot, Shawn and Kim Ann; Shayne Oliver, my aesthetic right hand man and dancer extraordinaire, plus there is even a word from legend Bobby Viteritti who has become an ally and huge inspiration over the past year (during his vox pop I had him comment directly on some of his own work).

So, enjoy, pre-order the album and feel free to go create your own memories…

The White Stripes To Release DVD

"Film everything, see what happens." - Jack White

The White Stripes made sure to document their 2007 Canadian tour, during which they performed on a Winnipeg transit bus, a Prince Edward Island fishing boat, and in a classroom. Remarking upon the smaller towns the band traversed, White told the CBC “As we went around and played a show in every province or territory, we realized that not even a Canadian band had ever done that. Which is wild, I can’t even believe that. How did we become the first, you know? It’s already the 21st century!”

The slice of life doc which includes about 40 songs, will show the inspirations for certian gigs, and the bands subsequent follow through to completion. But, fear not candy cane children, this ain't no Rock of Love Bus. White remarked, “I don’t think we would wanna film ourselves like this. I’m pretty anti-reality television and all that ridiculous peeking behind the curtain sort of aspect of entertainment these days, but in this case, I don’t think it really has that ridiculousness to it. It does have an insight into some of the things that got created and how we went about making a tour like that happen.”

What? A New Os Mutantes?

Os Mutantes have signed with Anti who will release their new album, Haih on September 8. This marks the bands first new album in 35 years.

White Noise by John Cage, Nick Cave, Yoko Ono and More

Direct from the press release (no editing)

No matter what you do, you’re always hearing something. –George Brecht

James Cohan Gallery is pleased to announce White Noise, a group exhibition featuring works that exist at the intersection of visual art, music and sound by artists of different generations. In the exhibition, there will be sounds to be looked at and objects to be heard. It will explore how sound can obliterate as well as elevate; how silence can involve both absence and presence.

Music and sound have been important influences on the visual arts since the cultural and social upheavals of the early 1960s. With the advent of performance art by Fluxus artists such as John Cage and Nam June Paik (who were both trained composers), expanded notions of music brought new elements to the creation of visual art. Additional influences such as rock and roll and the counterculture movement combined to create a revolutionary moment in which the boundaries of artistic disciplines were broken down.

Anchoring the exhibition are two iconic works from the 1960’s: Robert Morris’ Box with the Sound of Its Own Making (1961), a seminal piece from early process-based art and Joseph Beuys’ multiple Ja ja ja ja ja nee nee nee nee nee (1969), a stack of felt with an audio tape in its center that plays Beuys chanting the German words for “yes and no,” thereby muffling the potential for discourse.

Themes represented in White Noise are as diverse as the group of artists; Christian Marclay’s silkscreen painting, Brown Silence (The Electric Chair), 2006, takes off from Warhol’s electric chair paintings by drawing a parallel between the “silence” sign over the doorway of an execution room and the “applause” sign in television studios; Louise Lawler’s audio piece, Birdcalls (1972), employs the artist’s voice to express conceptual musings on gender; Lucas Ajemian’s and Jason Ajemian’s Untitled (2006), is a video piece that rearranges the Black Sabbath’s song, “Into the Void” in a musical experiment that references spirituality and the occult; and Laurie Anderson’s In the House. In the Fire (2009) is a sculptural work that presents a meditation on sounds in the world around us.

The wide-range of works in the exhibition are represented by a variety of media including sculpture, film, recordings, installations, photographs, paintings and works on paper by artists Lucas Ajemian and Jason Ajemian, Laurie Anderson, Ronnie Bass, Joseph Beuys, Nick Cave, Martha Colburn, Anne Collier, Moyra Davey, Tacita Dean, Simon Evans, Brendan Fowler, Rodney Graham, Chris Hanson and Hendrika Sonnenberg, Jay King and Mario Diaz de León, Jacob Kirkegaard, Jutta Koether, Jim Lambie, Louise Lawler, Christian Marclay, David Moreno, Robert Morris, Yoko Ono, Raymond Pettibone, Jack Pierson, Robin Rhode, Jamie Shovlin, Robert Smithson, Meredyth Sparks, Reena Spaulings, Emily Sundblad, and Fred Tomaselli. As part of an outdoor audio program, we will feature sound works from a 2004 group exhibition at Art in General, Rock’s Role (After Ryoanji), and music by 1980s post-punk band Bush Tetras.

The exhibition will feature four newly commissioned works by Nick Cave, Simon Evans, Brendan Fowler, and Fred Tomaselli.

This exhibition was curated by Elyse Goldberg and co-curated by Jessica Lin Cox.

Dave Stewart and First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy Celebrate Mandela's Birthday

Dave Stewart and France's First Lady Carla Bruni-Sarkozy are confirmed to perform as a duo at Madison Square Garden in New York on July 18 in celebration of Nelson Mandela's 91st birthday. The concert will mark the first annual global "Mandela Day." Aretha Franklin (in her big hat}?, Queen Latifah, Cyndi Lauper, Jesse McCartney, Josh Groban and Wyclef Jean, and others will also perform.

In other Dave Stewart news, not only does he write music, perform, and sell sex toys, but he has a new photography book available,The Dave Stewart Songbook Vol. 1. ( Talk about jack of all trades)! The book features portrait photographs by Stewart either with or inspired by the works of artists like Annie Lennox, Mick Jagger, Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, Bryan Ferry, Gwen Stefani, Bono, and others.

Did you know:
Dave Stewart was originally approached by Nelson Mandela to help fight the AIDS epidemic. Stewart envisioned a global campaign using Mr. Mandela's prison number "46664" for telephone donations. Stewart wrote songs with a number of artists, including Bono, Paul McCartney, and the rock band Queen, which would only be heard after dialing a prefix on a cell phone or a landline. As donators listened, they were charged a fee, with donations going straight to the 46664 fund.

Dave Stewart, along with Queen, went on to co-create the first 46664 concert in South Africa. Stewart enlisted friends including Bono and The Edge, Beyoncé, Bob Geldof, Jimmy Cliff, Peter Gabriel, Anastacia, and long-time partner Annie Lennox, along with many of Africa's legendary artists for the event. The four-and-a-half hour concert was broadcast live in South Africa on SABC and worldwide on MTV on World AIDS Day to over 2 billion people.

Castanets Announce Tour And New Album

"The more you listen, the more 'In the Vines' coils around you with its melancholic honesty amid slinking acoustic guitars and embellished, digitally amplified effects. Castanets frontman Raymond Raposa is said to have spent years traveling through Greyhound stations, and it's that lonesome, wandering spirit that finds him zigzagging through traditional country, the bluesy folk of Bob Dylan, and the lo-fi fuzz of Neutral Milk Hotel. Raposa's dark earnestness speaks dust-covered volumes on searching for a place in the sun." -- Michael Williams, Boston Globe
