Aids Wolf
"We are a fucking cult and will cause you harm and ill will."
The 9 Principles of AIDS Wolf

1: Maintain a Daily Ritual. Music is like breathing, eating, walking, sleeping, drinking, pissing, and, with any luck, fucking. One must have something to play, create, and examine everyday; there are simply no vacations. Music must be a physical need and a mental compulsion in each moment of existence.

2: Live Aesthetic Immersion. One's aesthetic inclinations regarding sound should bleed over into and flow from all artistic disciplines as easily as they do from daily experience. There is no reason a sonic composition cannot be inspired by or contribute to a drawing, a tasty curry, or one's choice of socks.

3. When in Doubt, Bum Them Out. If you can't convert 'em, make 'em run crying and holding their ears. There is no shame in being a bummer. To elicit a reaction - positive or negative - is a valueless proposition and a noble pursuit in its own right.

4. Get in the Van. This is self-explanatory. Read the book, live the life.

5. Seek Strength Through Strength. Gear's gotta be carried, sleep must be forsaken, and long tours have to be survived, knowing all the while that ideas flow best when one has the stamina to let them out. Through proper consumption of wholesome fresh foods, daily strength training and sports, and copious amounts of fresh air, one can foster personal fortitude and allow room for creativity to flower.

6. Join the Family. AIDS Wolf is a nuclear family, from which flows an ever-expanding extended family network. Artistic collaborations, shared travels, exchanged stories, and general camaraderie with other bands and artists are not only motivating and inspiring but also serve as a vital metrics by which to measure one's own perceived worth.

7. Allow for Sonic Fields of Nothing. The use of negative space in music and design creates new dynamics, abstracts the obvious, and challenges both the creator and the audience.

8. Lift Anchor and Set Sail. De-anchoring compositions by dispensing with a bass guitar allows AIDS Wolf to make rhythm, often muddled, confused, and obscured with polyrhythmicality, the central feature of its performances. Lacking a "mama heartbeat", in this way, pushes the band out of predictability and puts atonality on a pedestal.

9. Become the Weird Punks. Remember when punk was weird and when weird was punk Destroy genre straight jackets and move out of the comfortable. Confrontation with norms and expectations is where the AIDS Wolf family is most at home.

Now that you have studied and committed the 9 Principles of AIDS Wolf to memory, you are ready to carry them into your daily life. Find failure and misery as you are guided by these tenets and bring them with you into the wider world.

I Likes Me Some Obi Best / Bird and the Bee Related

Obi Best
Capades
Social Science Recordings

L.A. band Obi Best (no, not the Eminem guy with the shower cap), has a new video "Green and White Stripes," directed by Max Goldblatt (MGMT's "Boogie Down"). Obi Best is fronted by Alex Lilly whom you may know from The Bird and the Bee. The new album is out tomorrow. I've only heard the single "Green and White Stripes" thusfar, but I like it a lot. Check out their dewey, dreamy, mellow sound and see what you think.

N.I.N. and Janes Addiction Confirmed (Sort Of) and Duran Duran Contribute To War Child Charity, Begin New Album

Trent Reznor has confirmed his studio work with Janes Addiction(see prior post). He stated he produced "some work." So my speculation still stands as speculaltion. In an interview with Richard Kingsmill on triplej he stated "We talked about working on some new music and went in the studio and recorded a few tracks. Some new stuff and some old stuff. I'm not sure where that's going to wind up. That was me wrangling them in to being in the same studio together. I walked in to a minefield to be honest with you. Because I knew them, all independently but I'd never really recently spent any time with them. I could understand why they broke up the first time, just weird interpersonal things that needed to be worked out like any gang of people. And these guys hadn't been around each other much since '91. So the challenge I was faced with was trying to get them to communicate and feel good about what they're doing and record something that had merit. We succeeded in some ways, we failed in other ways but it was a process that got everybody talking and that led to use talking about maybe touring together and it seemed to make sense."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Duran Duran have reportedly begun work on their new album. Fans of the band know that means it should be ready some time in the next..ten years. Meanwhile they have contributed a live version of "A View To A Kill" from their collaborative show with Mark Ronson, to the War Child Heroes project.

A Smashing Pumpkins, A Cheap Trick and A Hanson Walk Into A Bar......

Stop me if you've heard it. But seriously...

Smashing Pumpkins, Hanson, Fountains Of Wayne and Cheap Trick members James Iha, Taylor Hanson, Adam Schlesinger, and Bun E. Carlos have formed a band called Tinted Windows. Their self titled debut will be available April 21. Taylor Hanson will perform vocal duties. Expect "secret" club shows to be announced shortly, as opposed to longly.

For more info, go to myspace.com/tintedwindows or tintedwindowsmusic.com

I wonder if they were inspired by Run D.M.C.'s lyric "Tinted windows don't mean nothin' they know who's inside" from "It's Tricky?"

“…a particular kind of post-rock from a post-industrial city … Imagine if DJ Shadow were into noise rock, if the Dead Milkmen rapped, or if My Bloody Valentine composed purely with found sounds” [KEXP Blog]

“...guitar-based music for listeners who have become accustomed to having their music spiced up with samples… But unlike some bands that over-rely on the sample, these guys share an extremely musical sensibility that suffuses each element with little handmade sonic easter eggs... hard-won skills” [Wired]

Who Are The Mysterious Condo Fucks?

MAtador has a new act Condo Fucks and it's all very mysterious and the song titles and riffs on classic album covers and titles are pretty funny. http://www.matadorrecords.com for a loooksee and some mps and videos.

Condo Fucks Cover One OF My Favorite Mod Classics:

And there is this chuckle of a p.r. message too:
"Legendary New London, Conneticut trio, Condo F__ks, returned to the stage in March '08 after a long
absence from the tri-state's concert circuit. A secretive Hoboken rehearsal was recorded and is being
released March 24, 2009 by Matador as... F__kbook.

Eschewing such Condo F__ks originals as 'F__kin' Gary Sandy' and 'Let's Get Rid Of New Haven', the
trio - Georgia Condo (drums), Kid Condo (guitar), and James McNew (bass) - instead tear through covers
of The Small Faces, Richard Hell, Beach Boys, Electric Eels, Troggs, Flaming Groovies and Slade classics
in the style that previously won them so much acclaim from the Nutmeg State's music journalists and radio
programmers all those years ago.

In the go-go 1990s, the Condo F__ks released 5 titles on the Matador label, some of which were
prominently advertised on the inner sleeve of Yo La Tengo's I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One.
Sadly, these titles are long out of print and we are unable to provide the media or retail with copies."

News - O- Rama:Grateful Dead, Phish, Rush, Black Sabbath, Rush, and new band too...

Stank patchouli alert! (Why do people insist on bathing themselves in this stench)? The Grateful Dead tour again. Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, and Mickey Hart will play 17 cities beginning April 12 in Greensboro, NC and closing on May 16 at The Gorge in Quincy, WA. www.dead.net

Speaking of questionable scents and the old joke “What did the Dead Head say when the acid wore off?”: Phish news
Rhino presents The Clifford Ball a 7 dvd collection documenting Phish’s 1996 festival. The mondo-box (you’ll have to sell a lot parking lor burritos for this) contains all three sets - complete with encores that Phish played during the two-night event, plus “hours” of bonus footage.

I Love The Amazing Delores

I was looking for a video of The Amazing Delores to share with you. I can't find my cd and had a hankering for her blues infused, leopard and lame' - spandex clad crooning. I found a video of some Brit picking on Delores. And she is amazing. Those of you who've received a mix tape from me with her on it know she is stupendous. You can't deny her power. She's got pipes, rats in her trailer while she's trying to get her some lovin', and she loves her some Jesus. Skip to 9:25 if you just want the Delores experience.

Her album has given me much pleasure over these many years. It not only has her songs, but telephone message recordings/ramblings of Janis Joplin impersonations, Jesus insights, and various proof of her intangible genius. Priced from mere cents to $3.00 - what can you lose?

1. Rats in My Trailor
2. Stop Testifyin' to the Devil
3. Goin' over 40
4. Love Magic
5. Stop Messin' With My Mind
6. Do the in and the Out
7. Ship of Slaves
8. Coal - The Amazing Delores, Kessier, John
9. Dixie Lee

11. Stand by Me - The Amazing Delores, King, Ben E.

Sleepy Sun To Release Debut LP

Sleepy Sun will release their debut lp Embrace on ATP/R and play home town Noise Pop Festival Wednesday Feb. 25th.

11 Things You Need To Know...

Tell us about the origins of the band – how you met, how you found your sound etc.:

This band was conceived under a full moon in the lovely town of Santa Cruz, California. With the forest and ocean as our back drop, we were drawn to each other as fellow musicians, friends, and lovers. Our sound began with a more straight laced rock n roll feel but soon took on more depth and heaviness, drawing from early Black Sabbath, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Can, and Creation Records, to more contemporary local acts like Comets on Fire and Mammatus. There was a lot of jamming - a lot of free flowing, heady, "where am I?" - type jamming that definitely contributed to our sonic ascension.

Your biog says you're from the "occult influenced creative community of Santa Cruz" – please elaborate! Are you into the occult as a band? And how big is occultism in Santa Cruz?!

Santa Cruz is a community very much submersed into it's own culture-- although it's veneer may convey a sense of murky, burned-out-hippy life, there's a sparkling bubble kingdom if you know where to narrow your vision. Beaches are covered in Monarch butterflies for a few weeks every year, naked dancing to drums in the moonlight, rogue black metal shows under the cover of night and redwood elders, and dank caves that eventually meet the salty ocean water. It becomes very easy to 'lose your head in the clouds' so to speak in such a geographically rich territory. Sometimes all you want to do is paint your face with charcoal, red, and black, cruise the graveyard, scope some blasters, and check out with some durk pins. The Occult is what you make it.

And then you moved to San Fran. What made you decide to move there? Whats the current day scene like there?

We all love Santa Cruz. We really do. But if we didn't make the move out of there, things could have easily become stagnant. There's a circuit of about four to five venues in Santa Cruz that you can play before it's all tapped out, and two of which are all ages. On top of that, more than half of 21+ crowd leaves for summer vacation from University, so it's difficult to build up a following in sleepy Santa Cruz Co. San Francisco on the other hand is a city, and we hit the ground rolling and have been shoveling coal in the engine ever since. As per the SF 'scene', it's really all across the board-- hair metal, punk, indie, electronica, etc. are all coexisting across the peninsula. They're all alive in their own little niche bars, and you can start to see cross-over which is where the electricity sparks.

There's a psych-rock influence on your sound. Is the psych rock sound still alive and well in the Bay Area?

There is not a 'psych rock' scene per se-- '67 is long gone, and Haight St. is nothing more than a tourist trap banking on the name and history of the area to sell Mukluks and Dead shirts (p.s. the Dead totally rules). We feel psychedelic influence on our music comes more from Northern California itself more than any scene or city. There truly is nowhere on Earth like our little corner of the country where the redwoods smother the ocean...

Your 'battle cry' is "Let's get weird". When and where do you use this phrase, and where did it come from?

This is the phrase to use when you and your friends are bored with ordinary, humdrum folly-making. If someone drops this line, where ever you may be, the entire group must participate in an activity created on the spot, regardless of social norms or rules. If this means 'diming' a record entitled "German Beer-Drinking Music", wrapping a poor soul in toilet paper and plastic bags, fogging out the living room and reinacting American Gladiators with socks and pillows, then so be it.

What are your shared interests, both musical and otherwise?

Pizza, horticulture, Neil Percival Young.

What have been the big milestones in your career to date?

There's nothing like having your first piece of vinyl pressed. Also, playing pretty much any show put on by Folk Yeah! Productions. Opening for Rodriguez at the Great American Hall in our hometown the day we got back from tour was a dream, and Folk Yeah!'s Festival in the Forest in Big Sur was an unforgettable moment for all of us. That festival was as close as it gets to the communal musical vibe everyone assumes is going on in the Bay Area.

Where and when did you record the album?

Sleepy Sun traveled to Vancouver, BC in January 2008 to record 'Embrace' with Colin Stewart. We tracked for 11 days, took off four days to rest on the island of Victoria, and then hopped back on the ferry to the Hive to mix for another four days.

What was the aim for the album? What were you hoping to achieve?

Before travelling to BC to record, much time was spent brainstorming about how to compile the songs in a way that would set a singular vibe or tone or message. In other words, we aimed to record a cohesive collection of songs, inspired by full length albums intended to be listened to from start to finish. We didn't however go into the studio claiming outright that we were going to create a "psych-roch record", i guess that came naturally. In the studio, There was a conscious decision to change the songs, allowing them to bloom into sonic bulbs, radically different than we had been playing them live for the past year. I suppose you could say we sought to frame these songs in their new light-- we've certainly changed the way we play them live since the birth of 'Embrace'.

Talk us through some of the key tracks (the inspiration / any fun stories behind them etcm unusual recording tecniques), especially future singles.

Electical-engineer Brian Tice recorded 9/10ths of the instruments on 'Golden Artifact' using an 8-track mixer in our living room in Santa Cruz (also known as the Dungeon, because of it's low ceilings, low lighting, and various smells attributed to a plethora of cats, sugar gliders and human rodents). All of the band lived in house during this period, and we sat down and hashed out the entire song in a few sittings. We setup the mixer, the mics were held together with tape and cobra-whiskey bottles, and hit 'record'. Our good friend Norman Krow mixed the original version to be placed on a compilation for the inaugural Loves in Heat Records festival. We brought along the data to Vancouver, BC and Colin Stewart worked his magic, and we re-tracked vocals and darker percussion.

After watching all the Hellraiser and all Jim Henson films in one sitting, Matt wrote the guitar verse for 'New Age' . Bret was currently studying in Europe, so the song (tentatively titled Cromag) bloomed into 15 minute epic sans vocals, compensated with shredding keys and hot air balloons. Once Bret returned from his overseas voyage, we started working on the track as a full band. It went through countless changes, but never sounded complete until a year and half of sitting on the back-burner (although occasional live performances existed for our own curiosity). This was the first song we attempted to record at the Hive Studios in Jan. 08' and we ended up ripping out half of the heavy, plodding guitar tracks and replaced with sparkling acoustics.

What are your hopes for the future of the band?

To do Wayne's World for a living.

reportedly chennels influences that range from Talking Heads and Brian Eno, to French Kicks and Fela Kuti. Each of the 11 tracks onEverybody, Come Outside! add to the mystique, as well as reveal a bit more about this unusual tale.

Pomegranates is Jacob Merritt (drums, percussion), Joey Cook (vocals, guitar, keys, bass), Josh Kufeldt (bass, electric guitar) and Isaac Karns (guitar, bass, sampling, vocals, keys). Paul Weller Best Male Artist Award / Brit Awards

From the Weller camp:
Hello again,

"Well, the morning after the night before and all that and here we are basking in the glory of another well earned and wel BEst Male Artistl deserved Weller award in last night's Brits for Best Male Artist.

This award tops off a top Weller year what with a number one album in '22 Dreams', probably his most eclectic collection of music to date taken us to different and rewarding experiences. '22 Dreams' has really come into its own in Paul's live shows and it will be hard to forget those climatic nights at Brixton back in November when every aspect of Paul's career was touched on. Classic.

Any year with a Weller album is always going to be a memorable one, but when you throw in a BBC collection then we're talking very special.

With that output it's hardly surprising that the feller come out on top again. You can't argue with quality!

So, congratulations Paul - well earned, but also thanks to you out there, your support and loyalty has - as always – been out of the top drawer.

Cheers"

Luaka Bop: 21st Century, 21st Year Defyiing Genres

Luaka Bop: 21st Century, 21st Year in Stores on May 26th.

The beginnings:
“At my ‘interview,’ neither of us said more than four or five sentences for an hour,” explains Yale Evelev, Luaka Bop’s co-owner and main A&R man. “I kept thinking, ‘Shouldn’t he be asking questions?’ I remember the last thing David said was, ‘I have to do my laundry now because I just got off tour.’ The only thing that was clear to me in the end was, ‘What the hell just happened?’”

“When we were connected to Warner Bros., they expected pop sales numbers,” says Evelev. “I remember one of the marketing people saying, ‘Yale, we want you to stop doing these compilations,’ during my first few months. And I go, ‘We just sold 350,000 copies of Beleza Tropical. Why would you want us to stop this?’ ‘Because we think you can do better. We think you should sign bands.’ What they really wanted, though, was for us to sign bands like the Talking Heads.”

“We have always been admirers of any outlets that are doing something different, and particularly dig the Luaka Bop pressings of Os Mutantes, Los Amigos and Shuggie Otis,” says Cornershop frontman Tjinder Singh, who released his own seminal When I was Born For the 7th Time LP through the label. “World music itself seems to be a lazy term that defines others. However, Luaka Bop has always gone further than that, without feeding people too much information of the backgrounds of the artists. If people are going to get into it, they will, and if they have to do their own research it makes that experience more valuable.”

Or as Byrne puts it, “Luaka Bop tries to look at music without prejudice, without saying, ‘This belongs in this category and this belongs there.’ It's like spinning the ideal radio dial and hearing interesting stuff coming out of lots of stations.”

I was at home and Dave Byrne called me in the nightfall, asking me about the Os Mutantes compilation Everything Is Possible. We spoke for a while, and I made suggestions on what songs should be included. We both chose the “dark sides”—our more unusual material. As we spoke, I remembered seeing his first gig at CBGB’s. It was a pleasure to see the cycle that started on a stage—with a girl ripping up telephone books—turn into a beautiful relationship. It was also a pleasure to meet and get to know Yale. Luaka is a symbol of energy renaissance and all the guys and girls that work there are a live testimony for it. —Sergio Dias of Os Mutantes

Sparks / Redd Kross/Flyin' Our Freak Flags

"All Sparks records play well with one another," says Steven McDonald
now, who (with Jim Wilson, Marcus Junca, and Steven Nistor) helped
perform those 21 albums during a break from his usual duties as the
bassist of Redd Kross – another L.A. rock 'n' roll brother team, he
adds. "The songs weave a continuum that makes the music undeniably
Sparks. All good bands are insular. Sparks are definitely not to be
excluded from that tradition. They have their own set of values and
interests that are unique to Sparks and Sparks fans alike. All my
friends that have been deep Sparks enthusiasts from the get-go are all
truly unique freak-flag-fliers – my favorite kind of people!"

Extra Golden Free Download and Thank You Very Quickly

Free MP3 Download:http://thrilljockey.com/drop/freebies/Extra_Golden-Anyango.mp3

After spending the summer playing shows such as the Pitchfork Festival and Roskilde, Extra Golden and Thrill Jockey records are pleased to announce the March 10 release of their new material Thank You Very Quickly. The basic tracks from this 6 song album were recorded in one day at guitarist Ian Eagleson’s parents’ house. Additional tracking was done in the Pocono Mountains, and the mixed in Washington, DC, with Jonathan Kreinik and Nikhil Ranade. All involved feel that this release saw Extra Golden gel as a band - rather than a “collaborative encounter."

Drummer Onyango Wuod Omari takes the lead role on “Ukimwi”, a passionate plea to destroy AIDS. And the title track was written to thank fans who donated money which served to keep Extra Golden’s families safe amidst Kenya’s post-election violence. The sound of the record is described as "pre-digital" with "live drum sounds" and "organic guitar tones."

NIN Tour News and Yacht: New Video and Tour Dates

2.16.09: A note from Trent and a wave goodbye
Towards the beginning of my career in Nine Inch Nails, our biggest break came in the form of an invitation to perform a series of shows with Jane's Addiction. These performances essentially created and defined the term "alternative" rock in the US, created an ongoing festival franchise that is still thriving (Lollapalooza), set the stage for Nirvana to shift popular taste a few months later, and were really fucking FUN to play and attend - truly the best times I've had. The shows were epic. So epic, they propelled NIN to the "next level" (whatever that means), but caused Jane's to implode. The band broke up at the end of that tour.

Fast forward to the present. Corporate rock STILL sucks. A friend tells me they saw the original Jane's lineup play a tiny show in LA that was unbelievable. I break out my Jane's records and am amazed by how vital they sound. These guys were the real deal and in this current climate mostly dominated by poseurs and pussies it was refreshing to hear something that sounded dangerous, volatile, beautiful and SINCERE.
Emails were sent, phone calls were made, dinner was arranged, ideas were discussed and the next thing I know we're in the studio experimenting. We laugh, we get to know each other, we cry, we yell, we almost quit, we record LOTS of guitar solos, we discuss, we actually begin to all communicate, we yell some more, we become FRIENDS, we laugh again and we do some great things. I get to see first hand why they broke up all those years ago but I also get the chance to see four distinct personalities that become an INCREDIBLE band when they're in the same room.

In NIN world, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases. I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while. Last year's "Lights in the Sky" tour was something I'm quite proud of and seems like the culmination of what I could pull off in terms of an elaborate production. It was also quite difficult to pull off technically and physically night after night and left us all a bit dazed. After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year. The approach to these shows is quite different from last year - much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted. Fun for us and a different way for you to see us and wave goodbye. I reached out to Jane's to see if they'd want to join us across the US and we all felt it could be a great thing. Will it work? Will it resonate in the marketplace? Who knows. Are there big record label marketing dollars to convince you to attend? Nope.
Does it feel right to us and does it seem like it will be fun for us and you? Yes it does.
Look for tour dates soon and I hope to see you out there.

Trent

Bluegrass Raconteurs / Electric Six Deserve A Second Look

Raconteurs Bluegrass Style (Two Great Tastes That Taste Great Together)

I posted about the bluegrass version of "Old Enough" prior to it's release, but totally forgot to buy it for myself. Maybe the holiday madness prevented you from purchasing as well? Or, maybe, like me, Santa or Hanukkah Harry didn't bring them for you?

2. Top Yourself (also apparently a bluegrass version)

Some confusion has surrounded a release by The Carter Sisters and Jack White. Let me clear it up for you. This is not Jack White of the White Stripes. If you are itching for more material, perhaps you might revisit his work on the soundtrack for Cold Mountain. It's earnest and wonderful (as is the whole soundtrack), and lest we forget the fantastic collaboration with Ms. Loretta Lynn on Van Lear Rose. Grammy Shmammy. We all knew it was fantastic, but it was nice for Loretta to get respect where it's due.

And if you want a smile on your face (and who doesn't really), I recommend you check out Detroit band Electric Six. They have provided me with hours of unrestrained laughter. Their song "Danger! High Voltage" features Jack White. He was credited on the recording as John S O'Leary, and the rumors of White lending his vocals were long denied, but eventually confirmed by Valentine. Frankly, one listen confirmed it none other than Jack White. It's spastic and hilarious and a rollicking good time.

I've been spinning I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me From Being The Master quite a bit and recommend it. It's funny, but to dismiss them as merely a joke band may be doing them a disservice. The band released a new album Flashy in the latter part of 2008. And speaking of Popshiter.com, have you seen the best of 2008 lsts? http://popshifter.com/category/best-of-lists/

If it's been a while since you've popped over to the always ridiculous www.rathergood.com, the punk rock kittens are currently jamming to "Fell in Love With a Girl." Also have a gander at the sites Kraftwerk tribute "4-piece Kraftwurst, with their eporkal tribute "We Are Pork Products."

Here are the Viking Kittens who started my love affair with rathergood.com and Electric Six:

(You might remember a Subway commercial that was allegedly pulled because it disturbed people. Here is the original piece starring the adorable (or frightening, depending on your perspective) SpongMonkeys and it's one of my most favorite things...ever. Spongmonkey toys and shirts? The consumer in me says "me want."
