Suburban Gothic Coming to VOD Itunes & Theaters

File under: Can a freak get a review copy already? For those who've been waiting on tenterhooks for a wide release of Suburban Gothic by director Richard bates Jr. (Excision), a date has finally been announced for the video on demand (VOD) release. Film Buff has added the film to its roster and will be available January 30 2015 for on demand audiences. Additionally it has been reported the film will see American theaters and itunes beginning January 15. I've been blogging this title for over a year and was unable to attend the Canadian premiere. Once again the film written by Richard Bates Jr. and Mark Bruner, stars Matthew Gray Gubler (Criminal Minds), Kat Dennings (Two Broke Girls), Ray Wise (Twin Peaks), Sally Kirkland (Anna), Mackenzie Philips (So Weird, One Day at a Time) and Baltimore's king of bad taste, and director of one of my favorite films Female Trouble - John Waters.

The Best of 2014

Thisismyhappening Presents Kaye Telle's Best of 2014 The Muffs, Whoop De Doo: 100% satisfaction guaranteed with this album. TRS-80, Volume One: A great compilation of remastered early works by a fantastic electronic band. Jack White, Lazaretto: A terrific album with phenomenal, record-setting vinyl format bells and whistles. OFF!, Wasted Years: It gave us the gold standard for punk rock and more recently, some pretty excellent videos, too. Omnivore Recordings: They recently announced the imminent release of two Jellyfish reissues with new liners and over 50 tracks. Pee Wee Herman: He’s back and making his presence known on social media and television. Pee Wee’s Playhouse was remastered and the news of that long-awaited movie seems very promising. The Walking Dead: It continues to set the standard for good television. From the premiere to the mid-season finale, I think this has been my favorite season. David Bowie Is, Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, Illinois: A staggering amount of memorabilia and information with backing audio, providing even the most ardent fan some surprises. Dolenz Jones Boyce & Hart reissue from Cherry Red: A must have for any die-hard Monkees fan and a better bet than most of the band’s later recordings. The Grand Budapest Hotel by director Wes Anderson was my favorite film of the year and a friggin' quirky masterpiece. And lastly the perfect little confection, Lindt Lindor Truffles Coconut. I love you. I hate you. You must be consumed in mass quantities. Buy some for stocking stuffers at Lindt Chocolates.

Life Without Music? Amusia: The inability to recognize musical tones or to reproduce them.

Some people are born without the ability to hear music. According to the BBC "Though most amusia sufferers find listening to music pointless, some even find it annoying and unpleasant." Amusia: The inability to recognize musical tones or to reproduce them. Amusia can be congenital (present at birth) or be acquired sometime later in life (as from brain damage). Amusia is composed of a- + -musia and literally means the lack of music. Also commonly called tone deafness. Here's a well done informative short video Can You Follow This Beat? by BrainCraft.

John Waters to Screen Pink Flamingos Sequel

According to artnews.com as reported by M.H. Miller, John Waters will screen a sequel to his camp classic Pink Flamingos called Kiddie Flamingos at his upcoming Marianne Boesky Gallery exhibition which opens on January 9, 2015. Of course with the absence of Diving, casting was an issue - so Waters has recreated and recast the first new film since 2004's A Dirty Shame/i> as a children’s movie. With child actors as a consideration, Waters material was “defanged and desexualized,” according to the gallery, which also describes this G-rated version as “more perverse than the original.” The show, Waters third with Marianne Boesky, will run January 9, 2015 through February 14, 2015.

Calling All Power Pop Fans: Jellyfish Reissues

As someone who owns thousands of albums I can easily say that those by Jellyfish are among my favorite and most played. I can't recommend these reissues strongly enough for their excellent musicianship, insanely catchy hooks and intricate harmnonies. This is also your chance to score great extras, particularly if you do not own the long out of print box set. The expanded deluxe CD editions of Bellybutton and Spilt Milk are available from Omnivore January 20, 2015 in North America. But please don't let that discourage you from buying them for your favorite music lover for Christmas, simply wrap a box and include a photocopy of the cd cover with a note that says you're giving them the gift that can't miss - Jellyfish! The press release: JELLYFISH’S BELLYBUTTON AND SPILT MILK, TO BE REISSUED ON OMNIVORE AS DELUXE TWO-CD SETS JANUARY 20, 2015 Remastered for first time, and featuring a staggering 51 bonus tracks LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Indie pop-rockers Jellyfish only released two albums in their short existence. Following Omnivore Recordings’ vinyl reissues of those titles in 2012, the Jellyfish Army has been reawakened and re-energized. Three never-before-available albums — Live at Bogart’s, Stack-a-Tracks, and Radio Jellyfish —helped keep the legacy alive. The story now comes full circle with the expanded deluxe CD editions of Bellybutton and Spilt Milk, available from Omnivore on January 20, 2015 in North America. Both titles have been expanded to two discs and include the original albums in their entirety fortified with a colossal 51 bonus tracks spread among the packages. With tracks from the demos to the albums to the tours, these releases are the ultimate Jellyfish experience. Jellyfish’s 1994 debut, Bellybutton, has been remastered for the first time for the deluxe reissue. The full-length is joined on the first CD of the set by ten live performances recorded during that album’s tour. These tracks include Jellyfish originals, as well as covers of songs from Paul McCartney & Wings and The Archies. The second disc of the set is composed of demos — nine that would end up on Bellybutton and one eventually recorded for Spilt Milk, as well as others of which studio versions were never cut, and a cover of Donovan’s “Season of the Witch.” This disc will also be available digitally worldwide as The Bellybutton Demos on the same date. The band’s follow-up, Spilt Milk, is also treated to a revelatory remastering, with the first disc adding eight demos of songs considered for, but not recorded for the release. The second disc contains demos for the album tracks, four live performances from the tour, the last studio recording from the band (a cover of Harry Nilsson’s “Think About Your Troubles”), and a special message from Jellyfish recorded in the studio during the album’s creation and originally sent to fan club members. Both releases feature expanded artwork with photos and memorabilia. Essays from Ken Sharp (author of books on KISS, John Lennon & Yoko Ono, Eric Carmen and more) incorporate new interviews with Andy Sturmer, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., and Jason Falkner from Jellyfish, as well as the albums’ producers. Sturmer and Manning also provide track-by-track commentary on the original album tracks. According to the band’s Roger Joseph Manning, Jr., “It's so great to have both albums remastered and available again. We know that the fans have been looking for the tracks that only appeared on a long out-of-print boxed set, so many of those outtakes, demos and live tracks have been added to make these expanded deluxe two-CD sets as comprehensive as possible.”

Todays Christmas Jam: The Pogues w/ Kirsty MacColl

Perhaps my favorite Christmas song, The Pogues Featuring Kirsty MacColl - "Fairytale Of New York." Perhaps today's choice says a lot about me. New Trailer for Red Windows

Here's a new trailer for the film Red Windows and a synopsis I found: "With evidence that her apartment is being invaded, Abby Mitchell, with little opportunity for escape, is convinced she is being watched from a quiet neighboring house where all the windows have been mysteriously covered with red fabric." I wish I had some more information, but have yet to hear from the PR contact. It looks promising for fans of Horror and Suspense. Enjoy!

New Horror: North Woods

ATTENTION OLD SCHOOL HORROR AND GRINDHOUSE FANS! GET READY TO CHECK OUT NORTH WOODS. Horror veterans Lynn Lowry (Shivers, The Crazies) and Debbie Rochon (Tromeo and Juliet, American Nightmare) star in North Woods, a motion picture of unrelenting terror. Inspired by the likes of Phantasm, The Evil Dead and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, North Woods aims to bring the grindhouse horror ethos to a modern setting. The film is directed by Chris Moore, who co-wrote the script with Jason Kasper and stars alongside Lowry and Rochon. The cast also includes fresh faces Sarah McCraw, Andrew Roach, Amanda Grussaute, Brittany Mahaffey and J.K. Michaels. "North Woods is the kind of horror film that people have been looking for," explains co-writer/editor Jason Kasper. "But it's also everything that they're not expecting. It genuinely feels like a '70s and '80s horror film in the way that it's executed, giving you a nostalgic familiarity. However, it takes the tropes and cliches of the genre and completely turns them on their heads." The teaser trailer: and a snippet of the beginning of the film: North Woods is in its final 48 hours of crowdfunding on Indiegogo here to raise money in order to complete production. To encourage last-minute donations, prices have been slashed. Backers can get autographs from Lowry and Rochon, a DVD, a poster and more in one package for as low as $15. Other perks up for grabs include screen-used props, producer credits and even percentages of the film's profits. Presented by Macabre Pictures and Flowtac Entertainment, North Woods will be released in 2015.

Trailer: A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (Iranian Vampire Film)

A Girl Walks Home at Night is the first Iranian Vampire Film. Written and directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, the trailer looks like a cross between Film Noir and Feminist Theory. According to the website the film based on the Comic / Graphic Novel is " A sheer pleasure of pulp. A joyful mash-up of genre, archetype, and iconography, its prolific influences span spaghetti westerns, graphic novels, horror films, and the Iranian New Wave. Amped by a mix of Iranian rock, techno, and Morricone-inspired riffs, the film’s airy, anamorphic, black-and-white aesthetic combines the simmering tension of Sergio Leone with the weird surrealism of David Lynch." Sounds good to me. This Vice Films releas date is November 21 and I can't wait to see it. Preview Clip from Turning (Antony and the Johnsons Documentary)

Turning is a concert film documentary captured during Antony and the Johnsons and Charles Atlas' critically acclaimed tour of Europe during the fall of 2006. Turning explores the heart and experience of that series of performances. Through its synthesis of Antony's songs and Atlas' unfurling video portraiture of the 13 women who performed on stage, Turning is an "intimate and cinematic journey exploring themes of identity, transcendence, and the revelation of a revolutionary feminine essence." "The performance artist Johanna Constantine appeared as one of the 13 subjects in TURNING. Johanna and I met in our first year of university in California and she has been a huge influence on my life and work. We moved to NYC together in 1992 and co-founded a late night performance collective called Blacklips. We have always considered ourselves two sides of a whole: she seems to present a threatening, alien, armored face, while as a singer I exhibit a vulnerable interior. As the years have worn on, we have subliminally exchanged these roles, even from minute to minute. Johanna Constantine is also a founding member of an exhibition project we are now working on called Future Feminism. We first coined the term 'future feminism' to describe the work of a handful of female artists from NYC that work on a frontier by themselves, using their bodies as material, exploring themes of violence, femininity, alienation, innocence, eco-collapse and survivalism." -- Antony 2014 TURNING DOCUMENTARY AND CONCERT WILL BE RELEASED ON CD+DVD NOV. 11TH VIA SECRETLY CANADIAN, AND NOV. 10TH FROM ROUGH TRADE IN THE UK/EUROPE. Trailer for Turning, a film that deals with transexual issues.

New Alison Moyet: Minutes and Seconds Live

Metropolis Records will release a new Alison Moyet album, Minutes and Seconds Live on November 11. Alison Moyet (former member of 1980's electronic powerhouse duo Yaz - or in the U.K. Yazoo), is one of my all time favorite female vocalists, and live she does not disappoint. Her low smooth tones drip with lyrical emotions on both studio recordings and live performances. Seeing this woman perform live will leave you with chills. In some sort of new marketing strategy which I hope is not going to be a future trend, the album will be released digitally November 11, 2014, while the physical CD will not be available until January 13, 2015 via Cooking Vinyl/Metropolis Records. My only complaint of this release thusfar is that it does not include her version of Ne Me Quitte Pas, which I have been unsuccessful in obtaining. It remains the "white whale" of my extensive album and single collection. The Minutes and Seconds Live tracklist is as follows: 01 - Horizon Flame (Live) 02 - When I Was Your Girl (Live) 03 - Ordinary Girl (Live) 04 - Remind Yourself (Live) 05 - Is This Love (Live) 06 - Winter Kills (Live) 07 - Filigree (Live) 08 - Only You (Live) 09 - Changeling (Live) 10 - This House (Live) 11 - All Signs of Life (Live) 12 - All Cried Out (Live) 13 - Situation (Live) Moyet said of the material from her last release The Minutes, "Having worked live for an age with a traditional band line-up, I decided to return to my recording roots and an electronic pallet. This rapprochement begins with my 2013 album the minutes, a body of work I wrote together with its producer Guy Sigsworth." And "As the catalyst for the minutes tour, it enabled me to revisit some of my earlier work, either in the context it was originally intended, or with a new ear. Instead, reworking organic songs into a programmed format rather than the other way around and sparing me the niggling suspicion that I was in danger of inhabiting my own tribute act - which is a relevant consideration when you have been singing some of the songs for 30 something years, and wish still to be engaged."

Bye Bye Facebook? Hello ello.co

Will Someone Save us From facebook and Ourselves? Could Trent Reznor be involved? Looks Like a New Social Network May be a Good Thing? Goodbye facebook and hello to ello! Okay, so you may have heard about the recent name change policy at Facebook which has every righteous drag queen with their panties in a bunch (tough to do with your balls tucked deeply in your crack, or at least I imagine). Said policy also affects people like Howie Pyro, every original member of The Ramones (R.I.P.), tons of bloggers, artists, musicians and freak show performers alike. It also puts in jeopardy those who created aliases in order to play games or join groups on facebook without the worry that their boss might peek in on their vampire fetishes, or that some lovesick facebook freak with another alias might go all Richard Speck / Ted Bundy on their ass. It was bad enough when Google got into the mix and started merging multiple accounts, which, let's face it - had people wanted their accounts merged they would have created them as such. Now our privacy for profit is probably less private than you imagine (granted we 1984'd ourselves), and now we can't even use our chosen name for facebook's ill gotten gains. In an effort to appear non discriminatory facebook stated their name policy is "across the board." Well with folks like Sharon Needles leading the way there was an LGBT exodus from facebook. Sure someone could try to make up for it, but let's face it the damage is done, and it may be the final nail in the coffin for many who feel a bit stifled, but more than that find themselves, once rebels and now sheep. A friend and I last weekend had a conversation about this whole privacy, research, Big Brother, Commercialization of everything, self perpetuated scam of facebook, IE: We are all idiots. So it is with much interest that I stumbled upon ello.co with the motto "Simple, beautiful & ad-free." Their manifesto reads: "Your social network is owned by advertisers. Every post you share, every friend you make and every link you follow is tracked, recorded and converted into data. Advertisers buy your data so they can show you more ads. You are the product that’s bought and sold. We believe there is a better way. We believe in audacity. We believe in beauty, simplicity and transparency. We believe that the people who make things and the people who use them should be in partnership. We believe a social network can be a tool for empowerment. Not a tool to deceive, coerce and manipulate — but a place to connect, create and celebrate life. You are not a product. We will be in touch" Right now you may access and sign the manifesto and request an invitation in this beta stage. High profile names such as Trent Reznor are already on board. Is this a new project funded by renaissance man Reznor? Or is it the child of some talented computer savvy people who realized we're all acting like sheep and some of those sheep feel like lemmings? Looks like it's a small group of developers Paul Budnitz, Berger & Föhr, and Mode Set. See they aren't necessarily using their own names. This could save the masses! Could it be something non cynical for the good of the little guy who finds himself seemingly inexorably linked to facebook & in bed with that weasel, you know who I mean, forever? If my decades old hunch about Reznor one day delving into film scores (or ambient music) was right, then maybe this idea isn't as crazy as it sounds either! (You owe me money Marilyn Manson). All I know if that both NIN and Reznor are already present on this new project's site and it appears pseudonyms, nom de plumes, etc, are welcome. The developers say the site will be simple and ad free. It is currently in the Beta testing stage. It looks promising, but why believe me, I'm not Pitchfork or Rolling Stone. Visit the link. What could happen? It's not like your privacy isn't already invaded and sold every day. I'm cautiously interested.... In the meantime take a break from the internet and watch a film.

Calling All Mods! Calling All Mods!

Millions Like Us (The Story of Mod Revival 1977-1989) Any mod revivalist should find something interesting on this Mod Revival '77 - '89 Compilation. And don't blame me if you're not on this - the good folks at the always ace Cherry Red Records put it together. The box set is being launched with a special live event at Wimbledon AFC (details forthcoming). The box set includes lengthy liner notes, tons of rare photos and a substantial booklet. “Millions like us / Oh yes there's millions like us…” Millions Like Us is the first-ever box set to properly document the Mod Revival scene of the late Seventies and Eighties. Across 100 tracks by all the key bands, the story of the Mod Revival is told, from its roots in Punk/New Wave through to its commercial heyday in 1979 with bands like Secret Affair and The Lambrettas and onto its resurrection in 1985 with the likes of The Untouchables and Makin’ Time. “This is the time for action / This is the time to be seen” The box set boasts several Top 40 UK hit singles by Secret Affair, The Chords, The Lambrettas, The Untouchables and The Truth. Equally, many tracks have never been on CD before and The Upset’s ‘Only For Sheep’ and Nine Below Zero’s demo are previously unissued. The Mod scene continues to endure, and several books, films and TV programmes have come out in 2014 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Mod’s breakthrough back in 1964. “Imagination, a real sound / From the streets, from the towns” Several names on Millions Like Us progressed to fame and fortune, such as The Pogues’ Shane McGowan (The Nips), Talk Talk’s Mark Hollis (The Reaction), The Charlatans’ Martin Blunt (Makin’ Time), Paul Young (Q-Tips), The Alarm’s Mike Peters (Seventeen), The Style Council’s Mick Talbot (Merton Parkas), James Taylor of JTQ (The Prisoners), The Woodentops’ Rolo McGinty (The Upset). “I can see a new generation / Opening up, opening up in front of my eyes” While the four CDs are dominated by the explosion of bands/records in 1979, the box set reflects the extent to which Mod endured through the 1980s. Annotated with 20,000 words of text and numerous rare photos and other images, Millions Like Us is the ultimate tribute to a scene which captured a generation and yet has never been afforded any real degree of support from the mainstream media. The true Mod Revival was an underground phenomenon, driven by 60s-obsessed youths with a passion for music, clothes and scooters. Millions Like Us (The Story of Mod Revival 1977-1989) DISC ONE 1. Geneviève Bellemare "Live And Die"

Geneviève Bellemare "Live And Die" I'm currently enjoying the song and video "Live and Die" by Geneviève Bellemare. She collaborated over a ten month period writing with producers Mitchell Froom (Paul McCartney, Crowded House), Paul O’Duffy (Amy Winehouse), Busbee (Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson, Pink) and Tony Berg (Lucius, Nicklecreek) on her recently released Verve EP Live and Die. It brings to mind some of the solo Thom Yorke material mixed with Portishead and Sade via a smoky jazz club. Good stuff. Collaborater Berg comments, “Geneviève approaches writing—and music, in general—from a uniquely spontaneous and soulful place. She has an unerring sense of what feels right for her, so collaborating is strangely (and often hilariously) devoid of indecision. She says ‘yes’ or ‘no’ and that confidence informs everything she does. It’s refreshing to meet someone whose melodic and lyrical instincts are so completely her own.” Froom added, “I found Geneviève to have a distinctive point of view as an artist. As a singer, she has a depth of feeling that belies her age. Not exactly a soul singer, just absolutely real and soulful. As a writer of melodies and lyrics, she usually finds a unique melodic way into a song. In writing with her, I was constantly surprised with what she came up with (and how much I liked it!). All in all, everything I look for in a collaboration.”

Tusk Official Trailer Released / Clerks Anniversary Vinyl

Tusk - the Kevin Smith film that began on Twitter received a clip debut via Twitter. Here's the official trailer for Tusk. The film was written and directed by Kevin Smith and stars Justin Long, Haley Joel Osment, Michael Parks and Genesis Rodriguez. The synopsis for this horror tale is, and I shit you not, "Tusk follows a brash American podcaster as he braves the Canadian wilds to interview an old man with an incredible past, only to discover the man’s dark secret involves a walrus." Horror + walrus = I'm all in! And the clip Smith shared via Twitter: "I Don't Want to Die in Canada." And in other Smith news, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Clerks the 1994 soundtrack will be available for the first time on vinyl November 11. The soundtrack features Girls Against Boys, Alive in Chains, Bad Religion, The Jesus Lizard, Golden Smog, Soul Asylum, Seaweed and more, as well as audio clips from the film. TRIVIA: Licensing the songs cost more than the film cost to complete. Check out madmimi.com for more information.

Pussy Riot Panel Scheduled for Riot Fest 2014

Pussy Riot Panel for Riot Fest 2014 Announced In celebration of the 10th year of Riot fest, founder Michael A. Petryshyn decided to add discourse regarding political ideology to the music festival. The Pussy Riot panel discussion will be held September 12, 2014 in Chicago, IL. Henry Rollins will lead the panel consisting of Nadya Tolokonnikova (Pussy Riot/Zona Prava), Masha Alekhina (Pussy Riot/Zona Prava), Greg Graffin (Bad Religion, Vocalist/Professor or Geology at UCLA), Tim McIlrath (Rise Against), Marcelle Karp (writer/activist), and Michael A. Petryshyn (Riot Fest, Founder). Founded in 2011, feminist Riot Grrrl band and activists Pussy Riot staged unauthorized guerrilla performances in public locations such as public transportation and parks, but most notoriously in a church (for which some band members were arrested). The DIY band edited these experiences into music videos and posted them on the Internet. The collective have protested at the Olympics (and were re-arrested), published a book called Pussy Riot! A Punk Prayer for Freedom and inspired a documentary of the same name. If you find yourself grumbling about American senate gridlock and countless other political issues in the U.S. - do yourself a favor and watch this documentary which doesn't negate other problems in other countries, but certainly puts things in perspective. After watching the film, do a search and bone up on the happenings of the jailed women and the ensuing "Free Pussy Riot" campaigns. As reported in Vanyland, Nadya Tolokonnikova and Masha Alekhina are creating their own independent news agency, dubbed MediaZona, that will focus on courts, police stations, law enforcement, and the flawed prison system. The band’s prison rights group Zona Prava will collaborate with Russian political journalist Sergey Smirnov as editor-in-chief. In a press release Tolokonnikova has stated “Since our release from prison six months ago we’ve felt that Russian media are no longer able to cover what is going on. Because of the heavy censorship by authorities there is no space for anything in the media that criticizes Putin’s policies and tracks human rights abuses by Russian courts and law enforcement. Courts, prisons, arrests, convictions, riots in facilities, political criminal cases, crimes by law enforcement officials – our new media outlet will try to cover it all.” Here is a promotional trailer for the entertaining and enlightening film Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer.

Jack White at Château de Fontainebleau - A Take Away Show filmed in Saint-Saturnin Chapel, Fontainebleau Castle, on June 30th, 2014. White performs “The Same Boy You’ve Always Known” (The White Stripes’ White Blood Cells) and “Entitlement” (from Lazaretto). White's band includes Lillie Mae Rische, Dominic Davis and Fats Kaplin. Jack White's latest release Lazaretto is the highest selling vinyl LP of the last 20 years. The “Lazaretto” single is now available for purchase digitally with the non-album B-side “Power Of My Love.” The Libertines plan a reunion album and according to a French radio interview, Pete Doherty said Jack White may produce. Speaking separately to Consequence of Sound, a spokesperson for White said he “is not interested in producing the Libertines’ new album.” (Updated September 5) Seems like maybe The Libertines were either having "pipe dreams" or trying to capitalize om White's popularity. *JACK WHITE* *2014 TOUR* September 13th – Raleigh, NC, USA – Farm Aid Festival September 14th – Columbia, MD, USA – Merriweather Post Pavilion September 15th – Cleveland, OH, USA – Jacobs Pavilion at Nautica September 17th – Boston, MA, USA – The Bleacher Theater at Fenway Park September 19th – Atlanta, GA, USA – Music Midtown Festival September 20th – Jacksonville, FL, USA – Moran Theater September 21st – Miami, FL, USA – The Fillmore September 22nd – Miami, FL, USA – The Fillmore September 24th – Columbia, SC, USA – Township Auditorium October 11th – Mexico City, Mexico – Corona Capital Festival October 12th – Mexico City, Mexico – Corona Capital Festival November 16th – Brussels, Belgium – Forest National November 17th – Leeds, UK – Leeds Arena November 18th – Glasgow, UK – Hydro Arena November 19th – London, UK – O2 Arena

Captain Beefheart "Sun Zoom Spark"

This is one of those rare times when I think fans would really enjoy simply reading straight from a press release. But first I want to share a bit of the magic music and visuals of Captain Beefheart "Ice Cream for Crow." Anyway, in the spirit of sharing, here's some information regarding a Captain Beefheart box set straight from the folks behind the scenes. CAPTAIN BEEFHEART SUN ZOOM SPARK: 1970 TO 1972 Limited Edition Four-Disc Boxed Set Includes Newly Remastered Versions Of Lick My Decals Off, Baby, The Spotlight Kid And Clear Spot, Plus An Entire Disc Of Unreleased Outtakes Available On CD, LP, And Digitally November 11 From Rhino. LOS ANGELES - In the legendary Captain Beefheart discography, attention usually focuses on the carefully wrought, experimental music heard on Trout Mask Replica. As a consequence, the three stellar albums recorded soon after-Lick My Decals Off, Baby, The Spotlight Kid, and Clear Spot-are often overlooked. Rhino intends to change that with a limited edition four-disc collection that revisits the albums Captain Beefheart (aka Don Van Vliet) recorded with the Magic Band in the early Seventies. It includes all three albums, which have been remastered for the first time, as well as an entire disc featuring 14 previously unissued outtakes from that era. SUN ZOOM SPARK: 1970 to 1972 will be available on November 11 for a suggested list price of $59.98 on four CDs and $99.98 on four LPs. The set will also be available digitally. Recorded over a couple of weeks in the summer of 1970 at United Recording Group in Hollywood, Lick My Decals Off, Baby was released the following October. One of Van Vliet's favorites, the album represents the apex of his dissonant style and includes such standout tracks as the quirky-funny "I Love You, You Big Dummy" and the exquisite solo guitar piece "One Red Rose That I Mean." It was followed by The Spotlight Kid, which was recorded at The Record Plant in Los Angeles during the summer of 1971. It features a more barebones, blues-rock sound on songs like "Click Clack," "I'm Gonna Booglarize You Baby" and "Alice In Blunderland." Lester Bangs wrote in Rolling Stone (March '72) that Beefheart had struck the balance between "intensely personal type of statement" and "mass appeal," praising the album for its "wit and genius." Soon after, Clear Spot was released. Recorded in the summer of 1972, the album introduced several standout tracks, such as the vulnerable love song "My Head Is My Only House Unless It Rains," the soul ballad "Too Much Time," and the pulsing "Big Eyed Beans from Venus." The fourth and final disc in SUN ZOOM SPARK includes 14 unreleased tracks and is a trove of alternate versions, rehearsals and outtakes from the sessions for The Spotlight Kid and Clear Spot. The disc reveals just how much some songs evolved before being released. Among the highlights are a sung-version of "I Can't Do This Unless I Can Do This/Seam Crooked Sam," which became a spoken-word performance on Bat Chain Puller ; a raucous, off-kilter version of "Dirty Blue Gene" that pointed the way to the final version on Doc at the Radar Station; and an instrumental rehearsal of "The Witch Doctor Life" that is nearly unrecognizable compared to the version heard on 1982's Ice Cream For Crow. SUN ZOOM SPARK: 1970 to 1972 Track Listing Lick My Decals Off, Baby (October 1970) 1. "Lick My Decals Off, Baby" 2. "Doctor Dark" 3. "I Love You, You Big Dummy" 4. "Peon" 5. "Bellerin' Plain" 6. Foxygen "How Can You Really" (Rip off Todd Rundgren)?

Foxygen "How Can You Really" (Rip Off Todd Rundgren)? Foxygen "How Can You Really" from the album Foxygen...And Star Power, available October 14 via Jagjaguwar. Foxygen: The hipster version of The Darkness? Nope. Just some weasels that discovered Granny's RUNT album. Or more likely the Something/Anything single "I Saw the Light." How can you really rip off a classic song? Like that apparently. As they say, "Todd is God." Here's the classic song "I Saw the Light" by Todd Rundgren from his essential album Something/Anything. Speaking of Todd Rundgren you can check out his band Utopia as reissued and remastered and just plain all spruced up on Esoteric Recordings via the kind folks at Cherry Red Records. I'm currently listening to POV, but Oblivion and Redux '92 Live in Japan are also available. Pov includes the original album tracks, plus those from the 1986 compilation Trivia - essentially the hard core may not have "Fix Your Gaze" on this format. The booklet is top notch including an original advertisement, band photos, The Story by Mark Powell, lyrics and liner notes. Fantastic! Cherry Red gives Rhino a real run for their money in terms of top quality reissues and revamps. Check them out, because they have all sorts of genres and fantastic artists for audiophiles to fill in their collections or newbies to discover. You almost can't go wrong. From an earlier issue of the Utopia album POV, here's the track "Mated" Utopia are Todd Rundgren, Kasim Sulton, Roger Powell and John "Willie" Wilcox.

Suzi Quatro Box Set The Girl From Detroit City

Every once in a while when I have nothing clever or insightful to add - I'll merely post a press release as received from either a record company or publicity representative. Maybe I'll toss out a sentence like "Hey it's Leather Tuscadero from Happy Days" but if you're like me you already knew that and may own some of Suzi Quatro's music. Anyway, this is is one of those straight press release times: CAREER SPANNING 4-CD BOXED SET The Girl From Detroit City is a beautifully presented 4-CD boxed set, celebrating an amazing 50 years in the music business for rock ‘n’ roll queen, Suzi Quatro. The 82 tracks on offer here span the whole of Suzi’s career, including three songs by the Pleasure Seekers, the all-girl rock band, which Suzi formed along with her sister Patti, and which signed to Mercury Records in 1968. Her massive chart hits from the 1970s also feature, including the ‘Chinnichap’ numbers, Can the Can, 48 Crash and Devil Gate Drive and a whole wealth of material from the 1970s onwards, through to tracks from her critically-acclaimed 2011 album, In The Spotlight, which witnessed her reunion with producer, Mike Chapman; highlights of which included Suzi’s covers of Goldfrapp’s Strict Machine and Rhianna’s Breaking Dishes plus a Chapman number, A Girl Like Me, which he wrote especially for her. The Girl From Detroit City comes complete with fascinating up-to-date liner notes, tracking Suzi’s career from the outset to the present day, and it presents a wealth of album & poster artwork and photographs, including a shot of Suzi’s incredible vintage Ray-Ban collection! Suzi Quatro was the most successful female artist of the entire Glam Rock period (Suzi’s style and music were not truly ‘Glam’ but this was the era, which saw her shoot to stardom) and her influence on subsequent generations of female rock musicians are widely acknowledged. It’s been well-documented that Chrissie Hynde and Joan Jett both drew inspiration from Suzi but so have many others, including Talking Heads’ Tina Weymouth, who was encouraged to learn to play bass by listening to Quatro albums and, more recently, KT Tunstall revealed that the cover photo of her 2007 album Drastic Fantastic was based on Suzi’s image. In celebration of Suzi’s 50th year in the music business, the BBC will be hosting a special performance of her one-woman show, Unzipped, in London on Friday 26th September. It will be recorded for broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on Thursday 2nd October. On 29th September Cherry Red will also release the single The Girl From Detroit City on digital download only. This brand new song was recorded in 2013 and is exclusive to this compilation. Written and produced by Mike Chapman, the song speaks of Suzi’s early days in Detroit and her discovery by Mickie Most. 50 years on and Suzi Quatro has no intention of slowing down. She’s about to embark on another massive live tour and in 2015 she will finally publish her poetry in a book called Through My Eyes. SUZI QUATRO THE GIRL FROM DETROIT CITY (GLAMBOX150) CHERRY RED RECORDS 20TH OCTOBER 2014 Editor’s Notes Suzi Quatro has sold in excess of 55 million records worldwide. In the UK she has had 18 hit singles, including 2 No. 1s (Can The Can and Devil Gate Drive). From 1973-1979, Suzi featured in the British charts for no less than 101 weeks. In Australia it was 18 hit singles with 3 No. 1s, whilst in Germany the total was 18 chart entries, with 12 of them reaching the Top 10. In 2013, Suzi received a lifetime achievement award at her hometown Detroit Music Awards (the DMAs) and later that year she was presented the Woman of Valour Award from Musicians for Equal Opprtunities for Women (MEOW). She has also written her autobiography, Unzipped, which adds best-selling author to her already huge list of achievements. In 2012 she hit the stage at London’s Hippodrome Casino for a week, with her one-woman show based around the autobiography. With nigh on 40 years in show business, Suzi has taken on numerous acting roles, including the TV shows Happy Days, Minder, Dempsey & Makepeace, Absolutely Fabulous and Midsomer Murders. There have also been highly successful musical stage roles, including Annie Get Your Gun and Tallulah Who? and she appeared in the play, Exonerated, alongside Charles Dance. Suzi has ventured into the world of broadcasting with very successful shows on BBC Radio 2, including Rockin’ With Suzi Q and Wake Up Little Suzi. She also recorded a series of 2-hour high profile documentaries on some of her favourite artists, including Elvis Presley, Otis Redding, Patsy Cline, Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison, which were broadcast on BBC Radio 2 during 2011 and 2012. Suzi continues to tour and does over 100 shows a year all over the world. On retiring, she has this to say; “When I turn my back on the audience and shake my ass, and there is silence…..I’ll stop.”

Kid In Every Wes Anderson Movie

John Lennon's ode to Yoko Ono "Oh Yoko!" featured with great effect in a parody of Wes Anderon films that every well schooled fan of Wes Anderson films will love. Heaven Adores You: An Elliott Smith Documentary (The First Few Minutes)

The first few minutes of the Elliott Smith documentary Heaven Adores You Heaven Adores You is a documentary film by Nickolas Rossi about the astoundingly talented musician Elliott Smith, born Steven Paul Smith (1969-2003). AFI Docs has released the first few minutes of the film: The music of Smith is important to so many people, I think, because it is honest while expressing and encapsulating moments wherein words might otherwise fail. Smith's most famous song is probably "Miss Misery" from the Gus Van Sant film Good Will Hunting which Smith performed at the 70th Academy Awards, March 23, 1998. The sensitive "Indie" singer-songwriter tune placed on a soundtrack has since become a bit of an "in joke" among music lovers and film aficionados alike, but the song is absolutely stunning. But my favorite Smith song is "A Passing Feeling" from his posthumously released album From a Basement on the Hill. Elliott Smith is quoted about his "fame" as follows, (with a statement to which I empathize for other reasons), “The less I think about it, the happier I am. I don’t really care where I fit into anything, or if there’s anything to fit into to. It’s just, I like music, you know? That’s the thing. It’s really uncomplicated.”

Joseph Arthur Pays Tribute to Robin Williams

"Robin (A Tribute to Robin Williams 1951 - 2014)" by Joseph Arthur Well it didn't take long for this tribute to be written, recorded and ready for release did it? But then Joseph Arthur has a track record of periods of time during which he is extremely prolific. The lyrics and Music are by Arthur, no stranger to addiction or darkness himself. The video was edited by Ehud Lazin. The download is available via soundcloud.com. Arthur also released a tribute to Lou Reed on the album Lou. If you're interested in what I consider an essential album, check out Arthur's classic 2000 release Come to Where I'm From.

"Do Me" Demands Rex Smith

"Do Me" a demand or simple advice from Rex Smith's early band REX. How many times is the phrase "Do Me" uttered? Not enough I say. The end few seconds are my favorite. The album posted is the wrong one, "Do Me" is from the album REX, but for some inexplicable reason that youtube user cut off the final glorious rapid fire seconds. Didja count the "Do Mes"? In other news Happy birthday to Jeff McDonald of the always great (no, but seriously) band Redd Kross. And last note for the day: A flock of ravens is called an "unkindness." A Flock of Seagulls were called questionably coiffed.

Q&A With Kim Shattuck (The Muffs)

Q&A With Kim Shattuck of The Muffs & Noreen Sobczyk First off full disclosure: As a teen I wanted to recreate the Stop Pretending era Pandoras so bad that a friend bought me a pink paisley guitar to form my own garage rock band. Are you and Melanie (Vammen) currently friends? Kim: Yes! Melanie and I are buddies again. We finally kissed and made up after 17 years of not speaking. I love that girl. She's amazing. We have so much in common and have a similar sense if humor. Reconnecting with Melanie is the best! I was looking for a picture of you with the band where you cheekily (no pun intended) lift up your dress and it sent me to links I never want to visit again. Although I did appreciate seeing the line “fertile fun bags.” Where and for what was that photo taken? Kim: I don't remember that photo. I believe you about that though. I used to lift my dress a lot. I actually just did that at the Burger Au Go Go. I was showing the crowd how I wear mens underwear under dresses now. You always seem free spirited. Not like mugging for cameras, but authentically free spirited. Have you always been that way? Kim: I am a big goofball a lot of the time. Definitely not pretentious or self important! Speaking of that, the song “Cheezy” - any comment about whom this song was written? Kim: I probably shouldn't out the recipients of my ire. That would just be mean. As a weirdo I’ve always kind of used that word positively is there a reason you used that word for ”The Boy Next Door” and is it based on truth? Kim: It's a truthful song about something that happened. And when I say 'Weird' in this song I mean it as the bad weird. I was sitting down in my house to write lyrics for a cool song I just wrote the music to. I literally sit down with my guitar and paper and all of the sudden I hear banging and shouting from next door. It's scared me and my dog. I tippytoed out the back door and peeked over the fence and saw our neighbors weird son hitting his garage with a baseball bat and screaming obscenities. I locked all the doors and shut all the blinds and sat down and wrote the lyrics to the song in literally 3 minutes. Thank you to the dick neighbor for inspiring one of my favorite songs. My favorite lyric at the moment is from that song. I like “He’s an empty vessel made of cotton candy,” both the line and the delivery. Do you have a favorite lyric from this album? Kim: I kind of like "and no smarter than a wooden floor" from “Weird Boy Next Door” and The second verse of “Up and Down Around” which is "I don't care what I'm saying half the time. Are you scared when all I do is rhyme?" Because that actually happened once when I was at a buffet where they had an espresso machine and a chocolate fountain and I was so jacked up from overindulging on caffeine that I literally couldn't say anything unless I was rhyming. I also was talking very very fast. You write some of the most snarky intimidating lyrics and pair them with upbeat hooky pop. How do you decide which melody gets the angry or happy lyrics? Kim: I don't think about it at all. If you think when you write lyrics your lyrics will be stupid. Thinking is bad. I’ll make a note of that! Courtney Love stated a while ago, and I’m paraphrasing, that she’s “the only one still doing it.” Meaning (I assume) being a rock n roll woman. I immediately thought of you. What do you think about that sentiment? Kim: Courtney says stuff like that all the time. It's very entertaining. Indeed it can be entertaining. Speaking of entertainment what are your 5 favorite rock movies? Kim: A Hard Days Night, That Thing You Do, Charlie is My Darling, Don't Look Back, and Loudquietloud. As a fan of both I was disappointed in how The Pixies touring slot ended for you. Anything you would care to comment upon now that time has passed regarding your experience? Kim: It was actually a fun thing to do for the most part. The shows and the audiences were amazing. Charles (A.K.A. Frank Black or Black Francis) was super nice to me. He's a great guy. Really smart and funny. We had great spirited conversations about art and music and I will forever be grateful that he was trying to have me in his band. He was my advocate practically the whole time. I love a lot of those songs. I still do. Just because it ended abruptly doesn't mean my taste changes. I still like what I liked. Did Whoop De Doo come to fruition after the incident or was it already planned? Kim: The album was finished in Jan 2013 when I was asked to be in the Pixies. But we had a hard time deciding on a title. We put the album on hold until I could have a break or the Pixies tour was done. But when Charles said his “Whoop Dee Doo” comment (Black Francis said in the press, I think to Yahoo, that "changing bass players was no big deal, woop de do"), we all three decided that would be an amazing title. Is it frustrating to be a band that consistently delivers the goods but never really achieved huge commercial success? (Save for the "Kids in America" cover for Rock Band 2). Kim: I try not to worry about stuff like that. I just want to be happy with the songs I write and if I love the album we make then nothing else matters. You have the best growling scream in rock n roll rivalled only by Kat Bjelland. How do you do that? Does it ever affect your singing? Kim: It's the easiest thing in the world. To scream and then to immediately sing pretty is like driving. You floor it and go fast. Then you slam on the brakes. No big deal as long as you take care of the car. I became friends with a friend of yours Bill Bartell (A.K.A. Pat Fear from White Flag) only a year or so before he died and didn’t have a ton of time with him, but he’s still missed. I wonder if you have any stories or memories of Bill you would like to share? Kim: Bill was nuts! We had some funny times for sure. He bribed me to sing that stupid Jefferson Airplane song. I didn't want to do it but he wore me down. Then he gave me $10.00. I sang it. I felt like a whore!! Haha. “White Rabbit”? Kim: Yeah, “White Rabbit.” How did you come to be associated with Burger Records? I like so much of what they do. Kim: Ronnie and Roy started hearing about them. I just found out Ronnie and his gal and Lee and his gal went on a double date once. Where did you find the album cover art? Was the back sleeve shot a nod to The Monkees old radio booth gag or just a coincidence? Kim: I was studying photography in 1984. My boyfriend and I went to the zoo and I think he was sketching people and I was photographing them. I spotted a cool looking old couple looking at the gorillas and ran up behind them to get a shot. I love photographing people from behind because it makes them look so much more poignant. I didn't know our back cover looked like the Monkees. Our new video does though. Have you ever done an exhibit of your photographs? Kim: I was in a couple of group shows before, but I'd love to have an exhibit. It's on my bucket list. Do you enjoy touring? Do you prefer studio to touring? Kim: I love doing music for a living. I adore being in the studio. Playing live shows is amazing. Writing songs in my bedroom is the coolest thing ever.
