New Paul Weller Album Due

Paul Weller will release the double A-side single 'Wake Up The Nation'/'No Tears To Cry' on April 5th. His new album Wake Up The Nation on April 12 in the U.K. The record was produced and co-written by Simon Dine at Weller's Black Barn studios in Surrey. There was a mini reunion with (The Jam) bandmate Bruce Foxton on the song "Fast Car, Slow Traffic."

Here is a track by track description by Weller:
1. Moonshine

“Bev Bevan (The Move/ELO) plays drums on this one. Simon and I are big psychedelic music fans, so it was a real buzz. I was back to being a ten year old Move fan again.”

2. Wake Up The Nation

“It’s political with a small ‘p’. There’s a line in there about the death of the post box. It’s about how technology brings advantages but it also depersonalises things.”

3. No Tears To Cry

‘‘It’s s a definite nod to the Walker Brothers and those epic ballads. I thought it would fitting to get the man who played on a lot of those records to play on it. He’s seventy odd, but Clem (Cattini) came down and did it in literally two takes. He’s that good.”

4. Fast Car Slow Traffic

“It’s a real London tune. It’s a pretty full on. We played this on the last tour and people were really mad for it. It was really interesting to hear Bruce (Foxton) playing on it. You can instantly tell it’s him.”

5. Grasp and Still Connect

“It’s about how technology is meant to get us greater levels of communication, but I’m not convinced. It’s silly things like not talking to a conductor when you get on the bus - you buy a ticket from a machine. We’re forgetting how to talk to each other.”

6. She Speaks

“I’ve never really done anything like it before. It’s based on a poem I wrote about a year ago. Lyrically, it’s about the sea as a metaphor for life. Sometimes, however, you just have to plunge in and get on with it.”

7. Find The Torch Burn The Plans

“Thematically, it ties in with the title track. We’ve got to reclaim our heritage and our culture. Claim it back from the fucking politicians and the establishment. Charles (engineer) played drums. My daughter and her mate sang on it too.”

8. Aim High

“Stevie Pilgrim is on drums on this one. It was initially one phrase repeated over and over. I hit that falsetto voice, which was nice because I haven’t used it for a long time. Once I had the melody I wrote the words really quickly.”

9. Trees

“The words were inspired by going to see my dad just before he died. Simon liked them and he had the idea for five different musical parts to interpret them. My cousin Mark played guitar on it.”

10. Andromeda

“It’s about someone leaving a dying planet. I love the image of the last verse: “My mood gets lifted with the gravity’s pull/Looks like I’m smiling but I’m dying too.” It’s just about us mirroring our surroundings.”

11. Whatever Next

“It’s an instrumental. The album is made up of fairly short tracks but they’ve got a lot of information packed into them, so it’s nice to catch your breath for a minute, then get on with it.”

12. 7 + 3 Is The Strikers Name

“Kevin Shields plays on this one. He came down to the studio with a big bag of effects pedals and we took it from there. There’s a dig at the royal family in the lyrics – that whole invisible establishment is still in power, nothing’s changed.”

13. Pieces of A Dream

“We’d played it on the last tour and I was really surprised at how well it went down. People seem to really fucking love it. Stevie Pilgrim is on drums.”

14. 2 Fat Ladies

“I played bass and Little Barrie played guitar. It’s got a nice raw sound to it. What are the lyrics about? Hard to say. I was making them up as I went along! I think it’s a case of people taking what they want from it. What seems meaningless to one person can mean everything to someone else.”

New Apples In Stereo

The short version:
Apples In Stereo will release their seventh studio album TRAVELLERS IN SPACE AND TIME on April 20.

Full press release:
Studio-obsessed indie rockers The Apples in stereo are celebrating the start of a new decade with the release of their seventh studio album, Travellers in Space and Time, their most hi-fi and hook-laden production to date. Described by frontman Robert Schneider as "retro-futuristic super-pop," the album is the official follow-up to 2007's New Magnetic Wonder, and the band's second release for Elijah Wood's Simian Records. The album will be released on April 20 via Yep Roc/Simian/Elephant 6.

Travellers contains sixteen piano-driven tracks, bubbling over with vocoder harmonies and sci-fi sound effects, like 70's AM radio filtered through a UFO; including the robotic first single "Dance Floor", the four-on-the-floor dream-scape "Hey Elevator", the Hall and Oates-tinged "Told You Once", and the epic, yearning "Dream About The Future," among many instant hits. The musical theme heard in these songs is strung throughout Travellers: intense pop hooks and electronic sounds, mixed with a pumping, get-up-and-moonwalk beat.

"I wanted to make a futuristic pop record, to reach out to the kids of the future," Schneider relates. "It is what I imagine their more highly-evolved pop might sound like: shiny soul music with robots and humans singing together, yet informed by the music of our time. So we are sending a pop music message through time, hoping they will decode it and be into it."

It is the first studio album from The Apples in stereo to feature new drummer John Dufilho, lead singer of Dallas indie rockers The Deathray Davies; and sees Bill Doss (Olivia Tremor Control, Elephant 6) and John Ferguson (Ulysses, Big Fresh), longtime Schneider collaborators, as full-time keyboardists in the band, alongside veteran members John Hill (guitar) and Eric Allen (bass). Original drummer Hilarie Sidney left the band in 2006.

Anyone familiar with The Apples in stereo's career will know Schneider's ever-evolving production process is as intricate as the recordings he generates. Engaging the same primary engineering team used to record New Magnetic Wonder, most notably Bryce Goggin (Trout Studio's vintage recording wizard), as well as many studio-savvy friends and cohorts, the band spent well over a year in the studio recasting their signature pop sounds in chrome-plated futurism, all while adding a dance-driven vibe channeling ELO, Barry Gibb, Wild Honey-era Beach Boys and Off The Wall-era Michael Jackson.

With Travellers in Space and Time, Schneider continues experimenting with his recent invention, the Non-Pythagorean musical scale based on the logarithm, a mathematical function. Schneider is a passionate student of mathematics, and recently composed music based on prime numbers for a play written by world-class mathematician Andrew Granville, performed at the hallowed Institute for Advanced Study (home of Albert Einstein) in Princeton, New Jersey. Travellers includes "C.P.U.," the first pop song ever to incorporate this novel scale.

In addition, the album features songwriting contributions from all of the other Apples, including "Wings Away" (Bill Doss/John Ferguson), "Next Year At About The Same Time" (Eric Allen), "No Vacation" (John Ferguson/Robert Schneider), "Floating Away" (John Dufilho), and "Dignified Dignitary" (Robert Schneider/Bill Doss/John Hill).

The 2007 hit album, New Magnetic Wonder, spawned late night performances on Conan and Colbert, commercial placements for The Apples' music (Pepsi, New Balance, Samsung, and numerous others), invitations to perform at many prestigious festivals and venues (All Tomorrows Parties, Pitchfork, Primavera Sound, R.E.M. Charity Tribute Concert at Carnegie Hall), and a world tour that took the band as far away as Taiwan - not to mention a polished performance of their hit song "Energy" by the contestants on American Idol.

Since then, the band has been increasingly busy, gaining ownership of their spinART Records back catalog and readying the albums for re-release, compiling the best-of #1 Hits Explosion, and releasing Electronic Projects for Musicians, an album of rarities. Schneider also made his children's music debut with 2009's Robbert Bobbert and the Bubble Machine (Little Monster Records), which made it to many Year-End Best Of lists; made numerous mathematics convention appearances; released Buddha Electrostorm (Garden Gate Records), an album of lo-fi garage-psych recorded with his brother-in-law Craig Morris (who played and engineered on Travellers) under the name Thee American Revolution; and topped it all off with his featured keynote talk and Australian debut performance at the Big Sound Music Conference, where he was featured alongside many musical luminaries, including noted Brian Wilson collaborator (and one of Schneider's heroes), Van Dyke Parks... and all of this while hard at work on The Apples' most ambitious studio production yet.

Tom McRae

U.K. artist Tom McRae will release his fifth album The Alphabet of Hurricanes, March 16th on Cooking Vinyl.

Tracklisting:
Still love you
“like a wolf on a black new moon, a shadow boxer at high noon, I’m acting lost and so confused”
Says it all really, in between states of life are interesting for me, not knowing where you’ll be living next week, quite what you’ll be doing. I’ll take confusion over certainty every time. It’s not called dead certain for nothing.

Won’t Lie
“I know I’m born with a prophet’s curse, never see the good only see the worst”
I wanted a Klezmer or New Orleans feel to this song, something a bit waltzy and musically at odds with the unpleasant lyric. I’d like to be getting less angry as I get older, it just doesn’t seem to happen. My pessimism seems boundless. But at least I’m aware of it - and that’s stage one of my 12 step plan of how to get hopeful. To be honest, I don’t think it’s going to work.

Summer Of John Wayne
“the winding down of days, and the speeding up of time won’t change”….
I’m a big western fan… I bought a box set of John Wayne movies and watched him age in the space of a few days during one hot summer in New York. It was a reminder that we don’t have much time to celebrate or mourn each passing day, so in a city of personal ghosts it’s best to make peace with your past and move on.

Fifteen Miles Downriver
“It’s time I realised a man can’t fight the tide, and the moon has more influence than me”
You have to have at least one river song if you’re a singer-songwriter. It’s the law. On this record there are two, so I’m getting them out of the way now. I like the possibility of a different life being just around the river bend, it could get better, or there could be a waterfall. Either way you’re going to find out.

Told My Troubles To The River
“I told my troubles to the river, but the river brings them back to me”
Anyone who’s had even half a life carries a few regrets and a few ghosts with them. They come back to you when you least expect it. I wanted to put that sensation in a percussive song, something driving and repetitive, like someone trying to outrun the advancing tide.

American Spirit
“I’ve burned all colour and flame from this hot ambition that once held me.”
Melancholy isn’t fatal, it seems to only be the English that can’t allow themselves to revel in it as a counterpoint to the total blandness of unmediated happiness. What the hell ever came out of being happy? Happy people make me nervous.

Please
“Give you sun, you give me shade, and seven years of hurricanes, but now my love I’m sundialling my days away.”
The pop song on the record, I even doubled the vocals – I can spot coolness from a distance, but can’t lay claim to having any of my own. I think the tupperware stood in for drums quite nicely.

Me & Stetson
“blood to the bruise like wisdom to the long-lived fool, finally the shame brings understanding.”
This is another travelogue song. If you go seeking a revelatory drug experience in the desert, you have to be prepared to wake up with a lot of sand in your pants. It’s a good motto for life.

Can’t Find You
“But I’ll keep playing Atlas baby, though my shoulders ache, and I’ll spin this old world around, trying to see your face.”
Singer-songwriter carries the weight of the world on his shoulders, world could care less. But the best love is always unrequited.

Best Winter
“Singing with no shame in this broken choir, songs to save you from the fire, home before the liquor and echoes fade, sleeping in the shadow of the Empire State.”
Even an atheist can have fun singing carols and being drunk at midnight mass. At least me and the priest had that much in common. This might be the happiest song I’ve ever written, which makes a change.

MP3 Jack Rose / Final Album To Be Released

You may have heard the sad news that Thrill Jockey recording artist Jack Rose passed away December 5 from a heart attack at age 38. His final album Luck In the Valley will be released February 23. To download the first single "Woodpiles On The Side Of The Road"

Bio and album info:
A native of Virginia and resident of Philadelphia since 1998, Jack Rose first rose to prominence with the drone/noise/folk unit, Pelt. Pelt can be counted among the early influential new music underground bands such as UN, No Neck Blues Band, Charalambides, Tower Recordings and Six Organs of Admittance. Rose recorded and toured with the band up until 2006. Rose released his first solo LP in 2002, "Red Horse, White Mule", of post-Takoma, American primitive guitar. Along with the influences of John Fahey and Robbie Basho, Rose also incorporated North Indian classical, early American blues, bluegrass and minimalism into his singular style. 2005 saw the release of his fourth LP, "Kensington Blues", which incorporated all of the aforementioned influences and his playing/composing fully flowered. That LP is now considered a classic of contemporary guitar music.

In 2008 and 2009 Rose released "Dr. Ragtime and Pals" and "Jack Rose and the Black Twig Pickers" respectively. Those recordings featured many additional players like Glenn Jones, Micah Smaldone, Harmonica Dan and the Black Twig Pickers. The songs drew heavily on pre-war influences, either written by Rose or were his arrangements of early American classics. "Luck in the Valley" will be the third album in this set of recordings that Rose jokingly refers to as his "Ditch Trilogy". Rose continues his exploration of pre-war American music with a set brand new material featuring the Twigs, Jones, Harmonica Dan and Hans Chew along with a handful of solo pieces. This recording set out to capture the energy and feel of the classic three-track shack recordings by the Wray Brothers and Mordicai Jones. "Luck In The Valley" was written and recorded over a period of nine months off the road, an unusually long time for Rose to be at home and woodshedding. The album finds Rose employi
ng new themes and techniques that haven't appeared on previous releases.

Like all pre-war recordings and all of Rose's releases, this album was recorded live. It was not created using overdubs but rather by recording a few "takes" and selecting the best performance out of those. Rose stated, "I wanted the songs to have an immediacy and spontaneity as they were being recorded. All the musicians chosen for the record know how to play the songs without overworking the material, but at the same time creating memorable accompaniments on the spot." Several of the songs are in fact the first takes like “Blues for Percy Danforth”, “Lick Mountain Ramble” and "Woodpiles on the Side of the Road". Also Included in the set are three covers: “St. Louis Blues”, “Everybody Ought to Pray Sometime” and “West Coast Blues”. All of these pre-war classics are Rose’s unique arrangements.

The album title refers to the old red light section of St. Louis and was a code for procuring the services of a prostitute. Says Rose \"I read about it on some liner notes to a reissue of pre-war St. Louis recordings and I liked the ring of it.\" An avid record collector with an encyclopedic knowledge of pre-war American music, Rose has been acknowledged as a rising star among contemporary guitar players. "Luck in the Valley" finds Rose at his best surrounded by like-minded friends on a recording that is enriched by a sense of history but entirely new, vibrant and warm.

Bio: Quasi formed in Portland, Ore., in 1993, which means that it's been fearlessly rocking since long before your website launched or you booted up an iPod. For years -- 16 to be exact -- it was a duo consisting of Sam Coomes and Janet Weiss. In 2006, Joanna Bolme (of Stephen Malkmus + The Jicks) joined the band on bass.

Quasi flings words and notes relentlessly, hurling music across the stage like grenades. It is explosive and electrifying. Coomes devours his instruments, whether it is keyboard or guitar, fusing melody and mayhem. His voice can go from deadpan to caterwauling, from a lovely lilt to a sardonic sting. Weiss is the avalanche (earthquake? tsunami? volcano?) of drummers. Really, just step aside and make a soft landing for your jaw, because it's very likely to drop. Plus, Weiss can sing, which means that Quasi has harmonies; they hint at sweetness, settling into the halcyon moment for a while, before you realize that the words conjure a creeping sense of unease.

Quasi's songs teeter between optimism and despair, fantastical journeys and harsh realism; this is a pop band for people who like their pop throttled. Coomes, Weiss and Bolme are consummate players who let go of the reins to let the wildness accumulate; who space out and make the music disintegrate, blur and tumble before it falls back into the groove. Their playing is proficiently, seamlessly ragged.

"Quasi's new album, American Gong, is still ringing in my ears. And by ringing, I mean that it's obliterated and unstuffed the cushiony music that's been singing me to sleep for the past few years. Personally, I'm well rested and ready to move on. American Gong signals that the musical group hug we've been stuck in for a while is over. Gong lurches and veers; it reels, resets, crawls and moans. But the album also professes beauty; it surfaces from the murkiness and soars. In the midst of this awesome sonic storm are expertly crafted compositions and arrangements, gravel and grime-coated rock, psych and pop tunes that never lose their shine.

Listen to “Repulsion,” listen to “Little White Horse,” listen to “Bye Bye Blackbird.” Wait! Listen to the whole thing. “Black Dogs And Bubbles.” Yes! Yeah! Yay! Words just seem silly compared to the feeling of wanting to jump around.

Here's something that resembles a cheat sheet: there's a lot of guitar playing on this album. Let me end by saying that Quasi is a stellar and inventive band. On American Gong they sound inspired, happy to be playing, even joyful. I think kids will discover Quasi for the first time on American Gong. And long-time fans will wonder where all the time has gone and be thankful that Quasi is still around to provide the unofficial soundtrack to our hopelessly hopeful lives. Rise up!"

Elizabeth Fraser

Elizabeth Fraser's new EP Moses is now available in the U.S. digitally via itunes, and a 12" vinyl version will be available at retail January 26th. All proceeds from EP go to the family of Jake Drake-Brockman. Brockman (Echo and the Bunnymen) was killed in a motorcycle accident in September. He was a friend of both Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) and her musical and personal partner Damon Reece (Spiritualized, Massive Attack, Echo & The Bunnymen, BOM).

The itunes EP version is available here.

Moses was written and performed by Brockman, Fraser and Reece. It includes two re-mixes. One is by Thighpaulsandra (Julian Cope, Spiritualized, Coil) and the second comes from Andy Jenks (previously of Alpha and currently of The Flies, Spaceland).

You may read a Guardian interview with Elizabeth Fraser regarding this project

Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket Launches New Record Label

Removador Recordings and Solutions is a new online label created by Yim Yames of My Morning Jacket and his cousin (and former My Morning Jacket guitarist) Johnny Quaid. They have issued a press release which details the first three releases:

Jan 19 – Cortney Tidwell blends her boundless imagination and voice to create Boys. Her second full-length record, Boys leaps triumphantly from style to style, with her voice being the silken thread that holds the album together.

www.removador.com/cortney-tidwell

February 16 – The Ravenna Colt’s Slight Spell is a debut album bursting with an impassioned and dreamlike sentiment. The band, which is helmed by former My Morning Jacket guitarist Johnny Quaid, combines its myriad influences into a dark, spacious plane, highlighting its cosmic yet truly American style.

March 16 – Follow The Train's Mercury is a nine-song psychedelic journey into musical space. A potent and volatile mixture that pays tribute to the shoe-gazers of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, Mercury proves itself to be a compelling attraction to the ears.

www.removador.com/follow-the-train

Here is an "official statement" (which is at least an attempt to be funny) from Removador.

"The Removador Recordings and Solutions web venture will offer
consumers a rich new way of web-based living; specializing in music
purchase, production, and facilitation, as well as problem solving,
sports, rehab, recreation, vacation planning, vaccinations, ghosts,
and social networking. Coming this fall, Removador will also debut
our much talked about new 3-D printer technology, enabling consumers
to purchase food and auto parts online, and simply print them out in
the comfort of their own home with our new carbon and silicone based
3-D printer. Imagine ordering a few sprigs of broccoli, or needing a
new carburetor, and being able to print them out in edible 3-D- all in
the comfort of your own home! Anyone who comes to invest in or own a
share of the Removador name will not only find some of the coldest
music they ain't never heard, they will be provided with a richness of
living, and sharply increasing aural dividends for years to come.
Removador Recordings and Solutions- some of the coldest music you
ain't never heard!"

News From Deerhoof

Courtesy of KRS and Greg Saunier:

“Deerhoof was supposed to a West Coast tour with Cornelius last year but when our main show in Mexico City got canned due to H1N1, we never got the chance. Finally last month Satomi and I met members of Cornelius in Tokyo and they said 'sorry'. The Plastic Ono Band had just played and they were in it, along with Yuka Honda (of Cibo Matto), Sean Lennon and Yoko Ono.

Ono's music to me is very close to total purity. She seems to have no content in her songs and no plan in her performance. She just reacts to the situation, reflects the feeling in the room. It takes nerves of steel to do what she does. I'm never moved by any kind of music in the same way I am moved by traditional folk musics, but Yoko Ono is an exception.

Sean Lennon has supported Deerhoof for a long time. He told me he saw us at Coachella but I was too distracted at the time because Danny DeVito was standing right next to the stage the whole time we were playing. I loved his movie DEATH TO SMOOCHY so I was nervous - my old high school friend Ed Norton played a character that totally reminded me of Daniel Smith, a Deerhoof hero. Anyway, Sean's new band GAOSTT is amazing, their songs go in totally unpredictable directions, like if The Shins decided to get even more complicated in their songwriting instead of James Mercer going the simplification route i.e. Broken Bells."

Deerhoof will open for Yoko Ono at the Fox Theater in Oakland on February 23.
