1959 Jazz Reissues
• TIME OUT by the DAVE BRUBECK QUARTET (DOUBLE-CD + DVD)
• SKETCHES OF SPAIN by MILES DAVIS (DOUBLE-CD)
• MINGUS AH UM by CHARLES MINGUS (DOUBLE-CD)
All three are available digitally and at retail May 26.
TIME OUT by the Dave Brubeck Quartet: Exotic non-traditional rhythm signatures became one of the trademarks of the quartet, with Brubeck on piano, Paul Desmond on alto saxophone, bassist Eugene Wright, and drummer Joe Morello. A 5/4 vamp turned “Take Five” into an instrumental jazz staple and jukebox hit single b/w “Blue Rondo à La Turk.” The LP hit #2, stayed on the chart for more than three years, and became the first jazz album to sell a million copies. Liner notes for the 2009 edition of TIME OUT (which will contain a DVD documentary) are written by Ted Gioia, whose book West Coast Jazz (1998) contains two chapters devoted to Brubeck.
SKETCHES OF SPAIN by Miles Davis: Each of Miles’ four orchestral album collabo¬ra¬tions with arranger-composer Gil Evans – Miles Ahead (1957), Porgy And Bess (1958), Sketches Of Spain (1959), and Quiet Nights (1962) – was a masterwork in its own right. Sketches was Miles’ first post-Kind Of Blue project, and retains that LP’s modal feel on the 16-minute version of Rodrigo’s “Concierto de Aranjuez,’ the inspira¬tion for Davis and Evans. Liner notes for the 2009 edition of SKETCHES are written by composer academician Gunther Schuller, whose hundreds of accomplishments in jazz include playing french horn for Miles on the 1949-50 Birth Of The Cool sessions. SKETCHES was recorded in 1959 and released in 1960.
MINGUS AH UM by Charles Mingus: 2009 also marks the 30th anniversary of the death of the mercurial bandleader-composer, who had the budget at Columbia to double his two-horn front-line for the big sound of “Better Git It In Your Soul” and “Fables Of Faubus”, and homages to jazz greats Ellington (“Open Letter To Duke”), Morton (“Jelly Roll”), recently deceased Lester Young (“Good¬¬bye Pork Pie Hat”), and Mingus himself (“Self-Portrait in Three Colors”). The film noir quality of this album – considered to be one of the five truly essential Mingus LPs – predates a certain vein of film music later popularized by Henry Mancini. Liner notes for the 2009 edition of MINGUS AH UM are written by three-time Grammy Award-winning producer-annotator Michael Cuscuna.

Ólöf Arnalds Joins Bjork And the Dirty Projectors
“Arnalds is a fan of the musically esoteric (she plays a mean wine glass)” Flavorpill NYC

Arnalds has just finished recording her second solo album, produced by
Kjartan Sveinsson (Sigur rós) along with Skuli Sverrisson (Laurie Anderson), Shahzad Ismaily (Tom Waits, Bonnie 'Prince' Billy), and Davíð Þór Jónsson (Mugison).
Performing Live (as opposed to dead):
May 5th- Union Hall- Brooklyn
May 6th- Sycamore- Brooklyn
May 7th- Scandinavia House (Volvo Hall), NYC
May 8th- Housing Works Bookstore Cafe w/Björk and The Dirty Projectors- NYC
Bio -
Icelandic folk chanteuse Ólöf Arnalds has been a prominent figure in her native music scene for several years playing with Múm, Mugison, and Skúli Sverrisson. Ólöf has also been active in mixing aural and visual arts, taking a solo turn in and providing hypnotic vocals for Steingrímur Eyfjörð's video contribution to the 2007 Venice Biennial. The piece also won the 2008 Icelandic Visual Arts Award. Her University graduating musical video piece Eins og sagt er ( or "As they say” in English) has also been exhibited widely.
However, it is Ólöf's solo debut Við og Við that continues to garner widespread acclaim. Produced by Kjartan Sveinsson from Sigur rós, it won Best Alternative Album at the Iceland Music Awards as well as Record of the Year at Iceland's largest daily newspaper, Morgunblaðið.
2008 saw Ólöf play festivals throughout Europe. Highlights include sharing a three-way bill with Björk and Sigur Rós at Iceland's Náttúra concert, and opening for Björk in Athens, Greece. In September, Ólöf performed a sold out showcase at NYC's Le Poisson Rouge that was featured as the music pick for the day in the New York Times UrbanEye, Time Out New York, The Onion, and Flavorpill. The show in which Ólöf debuted Við og Við in full was the subject of a Dig For Fire TV documentary. In October, Ólöf became the first Icelandic musician to play a prestigious showcase slot at WOMEX, the world music expo.
Ólöf has just finished recording her second album which was once again produced by Kjartan Sveinsson from Sigur Rós. On May 8 she will join Björk and The Dirty Projectors for a one-time benefit show at the Housing Works Bookstore & Café as part of their "Live From Home" series.

Track By Track by Ryan Sollee
Golden and Green
I wrote this song after watching “In the Realms of the Unreal” about Henry Darger who was a reclusive artist from Chicago, who worked his entire life as a janitor and wrote a 15,000 page fully illustrated novel. His life story and the plot of his life’s work I found so captivating that I wanted to write a song about it. The story of the song intertwines his life with the plot of the story, the “Vivian Girls” are the main hero’s and a General named Manley is the villan. This was the most fun song to record on the record and definitely one of the strangest Builders songs so we decided to make it the first track.
Devil Town
A song I brought to the rest of the Builders thinking it was mediocre at best, the song was transformed when Ray and Paul added the drums and suddenly I realized it’s potential. The interplay of the clicks on the bass drum rim, and the mandolin give the song a cool off kilter momentum. It’s probably one of the hardest hitting Builders songs and a common first track of a set list.
Short Way Home
The only song on the record where melodica is featured, Paul is playing it like a harmonica through a lot of the song, which really works with the banjo. The stompy tempo and call and response vocals are more similar to the early builders work. This is one of two songs that we used the 15 person Flash Choir on, when the song breaks down they sing a harmonic, “Ahhhhhhhhhh”.
Barcelona
This is one of several songs I’ve written about the Spanish Civil War, recently I spent some time in Europe and visited Barcelona and attempted capturing the feeling of being there in this song. Harvey and Sebastian (who played a lot of the trumpet that’s on the record) came up with the mandonlin/trumpet flourish on the chorus and Paul along with our friend Victor mimicked the line.
Hands Like Roots
This song was written and recorded for the first record, but never sounded like it fit. For “Salvation” we added pump organ and violin which fills the song out. It’s a tough song to pull of live since to play all the parts we’d need a sixth person.
Down in This Hole
This song is about being locked up in a small town that feels like a prison. I wrote it after a heavy doses of Tom Wait’s, wanted to write a song where the last line of the first half of the verse was the first line in the last half. The piano driving the song is played by Paul, who originally wrote this on melodica, in the studio started working out the part on piano, we all looked at each other and said, “no do that, that is amazing.”
Raise Up
This is the other song on “Salvation” that’s about the Spanish Civil War, this song also blends some apocalyptic imagery. The rim shots on the bass drum and Alex’s bass line drive the song forward with a swing that’s unique to any other Builders song. The mariachi section near the end was pulled off by countering the mandolin melody with a counter melody of 3 trumpets and violin.
Vampire Lake
This is one of the oldest Builders songs, it was recorded 3 years ago, but didn’t go on the first record, “Salvation” needed another simple straight fast rocking song so we included it here. There is a slight lyrical change that probably only the original Builders fans will catch, the original version of the song is on the split LP we did with Loch Lomond.
The Wind Has Come
The Builders only real ballad, when Chris Funk approached me originally to produce the record, he inquired if we had ever written a ballad, at the time I had just written this song and I emailed him a demo of it. At home he scored out a violin, viola, and cello string arrangement and our friends Analisa and Emily Tornfelt, and Amanda Lawrence laid down the parts. Ray has a cool meandering clarinet part and Harvey is strumming Baritone Uke through the whole thing. The booming bass sound was attained by putting one bass drum in front of another and putting a mic behind the second one. There is also French horn, Organ, Bass and Bass Clarinet on this song, definitely the most involved composition on the record.
In the Branches
Chris had the idea to blend “The Wind has Come” and this song using several violin tracks creating an eerie chord. This song is set in the same time and storyline as “The Coal Mine Fall” and “Bringin’ Home the Rain” from the record before. This is the other song on the record where the Flash Choir sings, they start with a prolonged “Ahhhhh” coming after the break near the end, and then echo the “my branches are waiting for you“ chorus at the end.
The World is a Top
In the tradition of the first record, and most likely the next, of ending a record with a gospel song. This was fully recorded in the Masonic Temple in north Portland, which has a pretty incredible natural reverb in the room. For this one Chris Funk called upon his friend Marlon Irving from Lifesavas to gather friends and family who sing in a church in north Portland to sing on this track. Originally Ryan sang the entire song, but for this version Kaysandra Irving sang the middle verse and drove the feeling and spirit of the song home.

More Info On the Who Killed Amanda Palmer Book and DVD News
Amanda Palmer (leading lady/corpse) says:
This book developed much like the album did: accidentally…a bizarre creative snowball gathering speed down a dark, lost highway. My label had given me a teeny packaging budget for Who Killed Amanda Palmer, released in September 2008, and I had too large a concept for the artwork than would fit on four panels. So I decided to cut the label out altogether and make a little companion book of photos to accompany the album. I had been hoarding these dead photographs of myself since I was about eighteen and I'd wanted to thread them together into some sort of themed collection. The dead photos of yore spanned from random self-portraits in light studios to political street theater to college performance art projects (I famously showed up bloody, naked and dead in several spots on the Wesleyan University Campus in 1997 for my senior performance art project - I got an A!). I started expanding my dead photo collection as I was traveling around the world over the past eight years with The Dresden Dolls, and it was often a sort of therapy for me to wake early in the morning and head off to a secluded spot and set the auto-timer. Once the actual book was in motion, I found myself coercing photographers from all over Europe and Australia to snap dead shots during official press shoots. Dead with kangaroos. Dead in front of the Moulin Rouge. Dead in The Hague. Dead in a Chinatown noodle warehouse in Boston. My touring crew and my assistant Beth aided in my obsession, snapping shots from weird vantage points. Dead in a river, being poked by a stick by the opening band Smoosh who happened to be twelve, fourteen and sixteen years of age. Dead on the set of a video shoot in London. Dead backstage on a pile of beer kegs. At a concert in New York, I ran into my friend Regina Spektor and asked her to slump over a table so we could get a nice dead two-shot. I ran into Tegan and Sara and Edward Albee at an Out Magazine photo shoot we were in and Tegan snapped my corpse in front of Albee as he sat and read a newspaper from 1946. He agreed to be included in the book so long as he wasn't "accused of the killing." Being dead so frequently kept life interesting.
I decided to ring the writer Neil Gaiman, who I'd recently been introduced to--and who I knew was a fan of the Who Killed Amanda Palmer album--to throw some text in, and he was so fancy I never expected him to say yes but, surprisingly, he did. Very soon, the book crashed, much like the album, into a giant project that ended up involving Neil flying to Boston for an entire week and writing odd Amanda-slaying stories while tucked into the corner of my bedroom while I practiced piano for an upcoming tour. We would undertake bizarre outings to old Victorian houses, to Walden Pond, to highway bridges, to the ghetto alleys behind my house with Kyle Cassidy, a photographer with whom I had a long-standing relationship, and my photographer/assistant Beth Hommel and we would shoot dead photos galore. Dead at my parents’ house. Dead stuffed with clarinet. Dead with feral cats. Dead with funny-haired British author. Dead with vibrator. Dead in the bathtub. Neil's stories sometimes inspired the shots, but mostly the shots inspired Neil's stories. His stories manage to capture something beyond the absurdity of my corpse project though they often play along guiltily with the sarcastic mortal tongue stuck in my cheek. They capture something about the girls behind the corpses, the hearts and brains of those girls still beating under the layers of fake blood, broken tree branches and digital celluloid.
Neil Gaiman (author and perpetrator) says:
What I responded to, apart from the music, was that Amanda had been taking photos of herself dead for fourteen years, and so many of those photos were small frozen stories, and, especially with Kyle Cassidy's glorious photographs, I loved trying to turn them into stories. Some big stories, some very small stories, each story odd, each story fun to write, and each story, invariably, fatal.
Kyle Cassidy (photographer and blogger) says:
My photography has, for a very long time, been about the intersection of the normal and the absurd and this was really a perfect venue for exploring that. I tried to give each image an element of both and with a dead body in each shot, some large part of that equation is already there for you. It then becomes a question of balancing that with a scene of the mundane and then storytelling accessories to give the trip from point A to point B a lot of possibilities in between. A body at the bottom of the stairs tells an obvious story. Add a dozen roses and the legs of someone walking away and it's a mystery.
Beth Hommel (photographer, designer and assistant to leading lady/corpse) says:
I think this book appeals to the part of all of us that slows down while passing highway crashes. We find death fascinating--tragic or horrific death moreseo--and murder is the most intriguing thing of all. For this project we made art showing the many shades of murder, equal parts horror and humor. As I worked on this book for the better part of a year, I was continually amused at the reactions to the content. Some people were offended, some were intrigued but they all LOOKED. I want people to see this book and be appalled or amused or unnerved or even turned on. The particulars of the reaction aren't important. The important thing is that they slow down and stare.
In addition, Amanda has tirelessly shot videos for every song on Who Killed Amanda Palmer and will release them on DVD June 16th. The DVD release, like the book, will also don the name Who Killed Amanda Palmer.

Third Man Records Likes You and You, But Possibly Not You
A message from Third man Records and info regarding a second pressing of "Hang You From the Heavens" by The Dead Weather.
"A mighty thanks to all of the smiley-faced vinyl pilgrims who spent the first four hours of Third Man Records’ retail existence pushing legitimate, tangible paper US currency into our hands…and even the one fella who rounded off his purchase with some quarters and dimes. The vinyl was un-literally flying off the shelves. The fact you all were calm, patient and formed a single-file line without us even having to ask just reminds us that we’ve got the best friends in the world.
We here at Third Man have our chests pumping from the adrenaline of selling out of 2000 copies of our first release (the Dead Weather’s “Hang You From the Heavens”) in a mere matter of days. We’re so electrified that the second pressing, complete with Poe-worthy, bird-talon back cover artwork is already at the factory."
And a word on the future:
"7” singles from reclusive milquetoast goth Mildred (White's wife?) and the fanciful vaudevillian Rachelle Garniez will no doubt turn your frontal lobe into a veritable steaming pile of gleeful goo. Yes, they’re that amazing. These should be available so soon that we think we can smell them. Then again, it might just be the fumes."

Foreign Born Releases "Vacationing People" 7" on Black Iris Records
Foreign Born's upcoming Person to Person will be released June 23 on Secretly Canadian.
Black Iris Records 7" Series
A side "Vacationing People"
B side "Things We'll Never Be"
What is the deal with Black Iris?
With studios in New York, Los Angeles and Richmond, Virginia, Black Iris is a talented collective of musicians rooted in the independent music scene, providing original compositions and scores for entertainment, advertising and media. Because of their deep attachment and connection with the musical underground, the Black Iris label continues to offer fresh and unique sounds that stay ahead of current musical trends. Stemming from the music stages of Virginia and Los Angeles, the group's talent now has national reach, working across genres and actively touring the globe. Their composers include members of the Walkmen, Phantom Planet, Earlimart, Denali, Foreign Born and others.
The Black Iris label exists as a mechanism to broaden the musical experience of creative professionals in the advertising industry while allowing bands to record new music and produce exciting limited edition vinyl for their fans. Releases on the Black Iris label are produced in limited runs of 500 pieces, with half going to ad creatives and half being sold at the bands’ shows. This gives Black Iris an opportunity to foster the development of bands connected with the collective and potentially generate significant synch income for the artists. This is in line with Black Iris’ overarching mission; to create an environment in which musicians can support themselves making music.
Past Black Iris 7” artists include Bad Veins, whose forthcoming Dangerbird Records release was produced by Black Iris composer Justin Bailey and Foreign Born, whose guitarist Lewis Pesacov composes for Black Iris.

Paul Weller Cancels NYC Show
Paul Weller, who rarely cancels live shows, has cancelled his Nokia Theatre NYC show. His message to fans via the web (which Weller hates and reportedly does not use) is as follows "Hey, You may have heard that the Nokia Theatre date in New York this Friday (24th) has had to be cancelled for which many apologies. Unfortunately, due to a personal family matter this has been unavoidable."
I hope his Dad is okay. I know he (John Weller) suffered ill health several years ago and quit his long time gig as Paul's manager. My thoughts are with Paul and his family.

Golden Bear Release Everest and Their Bio
“Completely original and instantly memorable.” “Band to watch in 2007” – The Onion
Dear Listener,
This is Chris from Golden Bear and I’m writing this letter to tell you about our new EP, Everest. In 2006 and 2007, Golden Bear released two albums (Golden Bear and To The Farthest Star). Both were well-received and I was feeling good about that. We played SXSW and went on a tour of the East Coast to promote To The Farthest Star. The tour was a great and electrifying experience which I will not forget. In every city we played, we met many friendly folks who had warm and positive things to say about the shows. However, people often told me that they wished that our records felt more like our live shows-spontaneous, unhinged, and raucous. This bugged me. It bugged me because they were right. Making an album more consistent with who Golden Bear really were on-stage became #1 on my list of things to do.
I have heard people say that making an album is a bit like an exercise in one thing or another, be it songcraft, production, or any number of ideas. I agree with this. Golden Bear #1 was an experiment in even making an album, which I had no experience doing. It was learn-as-you go. Listening back, I take the good with the bad. Golden Bear #2 was about trying out a new style of songwriting (written on piano, rather than electric guitar) and a different method of recording (in my house on equipment we scraped together, rather than in a real studio). I would say Everest is our effort to catch the sound of Golden Bear circled-up, playing together like we would at a rehearsal or a show.
I was a little anxious about being able to approximate the sound of our live show in the first place, but I figured to hell with it-let’s give it a shot. And I’m glad we did. There were no endless nights of playing the same song 150 times, no overscrutinaztion, and in all honesty, no hitches in the plan whatsoever. It was loose, rowdy, and rewarding-just like our shows. After finishing our parts, we brought in a couple of pals to add some sugar (Kullen Fuchs [Ian Moore, Future Clouds & Radar] and Sara Beck [aka Pink Nasty]), got our friend Erik Wofford (who produced our first album, as well as albums by Voxtrot, Explosions In The Sky, and The Black Angels) to mix the songs, and Everest was done and ready to go.
So here we are. I am proud of these songs and how they sound. Like always, Golden Bear gave it our all, and we’ll keep on doing that. Hope you enjoy.
Best, Chris Gregory

Deleted Scenes Sing One Long Country Song
The album track “Ithaca” has been remixed, and the group shot a video for “One Long Country Song” in the same Metro station in which it was written. The Washington DC band commented on the experience, “It’s illegal to shoot on the DC Metro for homeland security reasons. Luckily nobody arrested us. The setting is perfect for its continual interplay with the lyrics. The song begins ‘It’s one long country song to the Metro / which is five blocks by anyone else’s count,’ and proceeds to process the previous evening’s romantic disaster through the bleary brain-chemistry of an awkward all-nighter.”

Wavves and Windsurf LImited Release
Free download of the collectors edition 7" from The FADER and Southern Comfort. The 10th edition in the series is available today for free download on thefader.com and features exclusive unreleased tracks by Wavves and Windsurf.
New York, NY: The FADER, the definitive voice of emerging music, and Southern Comfort announce the tenth installment in their series of limited-edition 7-inch vinyl releases curated by the editors of The FADER. This rare pressing of only five hundred copies will also be accessible to readers of The FADER, who will have the chance to win the record online at TheFADER.com. In addition to the limited pressing, the tracks will also be available for free download at TheFADER.com.
To kick off the a-side, Southern Comfort and The FADER enlisted San Diego's Wavves to cut "Friends Were Gone," a beach fuzz anthem of lo-fi loneliness. Flip the wax to Windsurf's instrumental track "Vapour Trails," a breezy jam that mixes their San Francisco-based haze with Scandinavian disco. On the cover, New York-based artist Mario Hugo crafted a psychedelic and surreal collage of eyeballs and guitars in a summer ready deep purple.
Previous releases in the series have matched up the likes of indie groups M Ward and Ladyhawk, dancehall vocalists Busy Signal and Mavado as well as boundary destroying rockers Black Lips and YACHT. The final 7-inch of the 2007 series featured Ed Banger DJ Busy P, as well as fellow Baltimore citizen DJ Blaqstarr. Continuing their tradition of showcasing emerging artists, The FADER and Southern Comfort kicked off the 2008 series with White Williams and Dirty Projectors and followed up with Africa issue cover stars BLK JKS, of South Africa, and Esau Mwamwaya, of London, paired up with the production duo Radioclit. This newest release comes off the heels of a union between Alabama's Hood Headlinaz and Baltimore rappers Get 'Em Mamis and another pairing Brooklyn's Telepathe and 77Klash. The previous edition featured FADER cover star Little Boots and Wild Yaks.
About The FADER
Founded by Rob Stone and Jon Cohen, The FADER is the definitive voice of emerging music and the lifestyle that surrounds it. Through in-depth reporting and a distinct street sensibility, The FADER aggressively covers the most dynamic breadth of music and style emanating from the fringes of the mainstream to the heart of the underground. The FADER was the first publication in history to be released on iTunes, in 2008 received a Folio award for the best full issue of a consumer entertainment magazine and in 2007 was named one of iTunes' best classic audio podcasts of the year. The FADER is the authority on what's next.

Marié Digby and Recycled Pee All In One Post
"I pushed myself to grow," said Digby. "The acoustic thing is very comfortable to me, but I don't want to be just that. I never want to feel that I'm supposed to be that girl with the guitar and nothing else. This album gave me an opportunity to break through."
Marié Digby's sophomore release Breathing Underwater will be released via Hollywood records this summer. For some reason the press release includes no date. That's almost as cool as debuting the album's single "Avalanche" on the cultural wasteland that is The Hills. In a world with little water, I'd rather drink Kevin Kostner's recycled pee than watch an entire episode of The Hills.
Tracks:
1. Daybreak
2. Avalanche
3. Breathing Underwater
4. Shoulda Been Simple
5. Know You By Heart
6. Feel
7. Come Find Me
8. Symphony
9. Machine
10. Overboard (featuring Livvi Franc)
11. Love with a Stranger
12. Come to Life
13. Crazier Things

Scott Hardkiss Releases His Label's Debut Album Technicolor Dreamer
Electronica artist Scott Hardkiss releases his label's debut album Technicolor Dreamer, July 28th (God Within Recordings). Hardkiss sings, raps, plays synths, drums, bass and guitar on almost every song on the record. Additionally he wrote, produced, arranged, engineered and self-recorded the music in his home-studio, Room Zero. The album is described as a "technicolor Dreamer is a bubbly, groovy retro-futuristic funk ride."
Helping Hardkiss on the record are: Britta Phillips (Dean & Britta/Luna), Lisa Shaw (Naked Music/Salted), Stevvi Alexander (Nelly Furtado/Justin Timberlake), Steven Bernstein (David Bowie), Bobby Harden (Blues Brothers), Tabitha Fair (Sting), J Bowman (George Clinton), Tabitha Fair (Sting), Ernest Carter (Bruce Springsteen) and more. The record was mixed by Jason Marcucci (Gnarls Barkley/Beck) and Scott and mastered by Brian Gardner (Outkast/Prince/Timbaland).
BIO:
Scott Hardkiss has been opening heads & hearts and making booties shake since his early days organizing and DJing some of the first raves and electronic multi-media dance events across the country in the early 90’s. He was at the forefront of kick-starting the San Francisco/West Coast sound and American electronic dance-music scene of the ‘90’s, as well as establishing the seminal record label Hardkiss Music, releasing albums that are now underground classics and amongst the most highly-collectable today. Hardkiss has also crafted a diverse array of remixes for a wide variety of artists across the musical spectrum including Elton John’s “Believe,” and the Flaming Lips “Do you Realize?” (which was included on the Lips’ Grammy-nominated Fight Test EP). In addition, his musical creativity found an outlet in contributing to scores for film, TV, and ads by directors including Spike Lee, Wes Anderson, & Richard Linklater.

New Jarvis Cocker - A Note From Jarvis and the single "Angelina"
The new Jarvis Cocker album Further Complications will be released May 19 on Rough Trade.

NOTES ON THIS ALBUM
By Jarvis Cocker
Please allow me to anticipate some of the questions you might have:
1 - WHY CHICAGO? WHY STEVE ALBINI?
Last year we were invited to play at the Pitchfork festival in Chicago during July. Steve Mackey (he
plays the bass, you know) suggested that we try recording some songs with Steve Albini whilst we
were in town. This made sense on many levels - to go all that way just to play one show seemed a
bit wasteful (eco-awareness) Plus, I had already decided that I wanted this record to be more of a
group effort than the last one. So we had worked songs out in rehearsal rather than me delivering
them fully-written & now I wanted to record them in an environment where we could all play at the
same time & hopefully capture something of the spirit of a band all working together, all aiming in
the same direction ( though at what I really couldn't say). Electrical Audio (Albini's studio) is
specifically designed to record bands in that way.
Plus, it was very cheap.
(The two songs we tried out in July worked out , so we booked time in January to finish the album.
The pound collapsed against the dollar in the interim).
2 - WHO DOES WHAT?
The core band is:
Jarvis sings & plays various bits & pieces.
Steve Mackey plays the bass
Ross Orton plays the drums
Simon Stafford plays keyboards & sings backing vocals
Tim McCall plays the guitar in the right-hand speaker
Martin Craft plays the guitar in the left-hand speaker + occasional keyboards & backing vocals
3 - HAS JARVIS GONE ROCK?
No - but during the course of touring his last record he discovered that , with this band, he COULD
rock & so he'd be a fool not to. (When the situation demanded it).
4 - WHAT ABOUT THE SONGS ON THE ALBUM?
I'll tell you a bit about some of the other songs we recorded. SLUSH is a song I wrote whilst
aboard a ship that was sailing up the west coast of Greenland last year. I guess that slush will be
the ultimate outcome of global warming. CAUCASIAN BLUES is an attempt to understand the
pain of a man whose Honda Goldwing has run out of petrol. I NEVER SAID I WAS DEEP is the
phrase that I would like carved on my tombstone & HOMEWRECKER! is an absolute racket
featuring saxophone from Steve Mackay (he played on The Stooges' "Funhouse", you know).
& FINALLY - WHAT'S WITH THE BEARD?
I grew it to keep my face warm in the Arctic & then I kind of got attached to it. (The amount of grey
in it horrified me at first but now I think it acts as a handy reminder of my own mortality.)
Thank you for taking the time to read these notes.
Further complications await.

The Gary Show Off Their Chub
THE GARY
Chub EP
(Cedar Fever)
Direct from the press release:
The Gary’s origins are on the Comal River, July 2008. Paul Warner paddled over to Dave Norwood and suggested they start a band called The Gary.
Dave saw no reason why they shouldn’t play in a band called The Gary, and so it began. It should be noted that both were several beers into their river journey, and it seemed like a good idea at the time. The beer-goggle phenomenon applies to band names, as well.
A week or two later, Trey Pool suggested he come and play some guitar. The band was complete. Songs were written and the band checked into East Austin’s infamous Hot Tracks recording studio in November to record the seven-song Chub EP. They began playing shows with bands such as DD/MM/YYYY, Medications, Maserati, and Grant Hart of Husker Du. The band began exchanging prose and verse about a fictive stoner ne’er-do-well named Gary, which will soon be made available in chapbook format. Suddenly, being called The Gary didn’t seem like such a bad thing, after all.
The Gary’s sound is as rooted in a sense of place as it is in their influences (Silkworm, Guided By Voices, Chicago post-rock, New Zealand noise-rock, etc.) Lyrics and song delivery convey the sense of defeat accompanied by “getting by” in their Austin/Central Texas surroundings...

Queer As Folk: Gretchen Phillips (W/Shearwater, Team Dresch, The Butchies)
Gretchen Philips releases a new album, I Was Just Comforting Her, with help from Shearwater, Team Dresch, The Butchies.
“Lyrically, I Was Just Comforting Her retains themes and emotions that distinguish this Texas Music Hall Of Fame inductee, such as a desire for empathy and human connection in a world plagued by alienation. Sonically, the album is rich and diverse, an indication that Phillips will continue to inspire fans for another 20 years at least.” -- Exclaim!

Rhino Issues 7" By The Smiths And New Order For Record Store Day
BURBANK, CA- To celebrate Record Store Day this April 18, Rhino offers
exclusive 7-inch vinyl releases by The Smiths and New Order. The Smiths
vinyl single features "The Headmaster Ritual" on Side A and "Oscillate
Wildly" on Side B. This is the rarest commercially issued single ever
released by the band. It was originally released on Megadisc in Holland but
never available in the U.S. It features the original Dutch package with
black & white "cowboy" sleeve. In addition, it's been mastered from the
original tapes.
The 7-inch New Order single features "Temptation" on Side A and "Hurt" on
Side B, and has never before been available in the U.S. as well. This
7-inch version uses separate recordings and features different mixes from
the original 12" single. "Temptation" is the song New Order has played live
more than any other. Both The Smiths and New Order vinyl singles will be
available April 18 from Rhino Records at all independent retail outlets for
a suggested list price of $5.98.

(Rumors) White Stripes News
According to Ross Riley at Strangeglue, in addition to The Dead Weather album, which you've read about here, Jack White is working on a White Stripes movie. Riley writes that in addition to Horehound there is an upcoming White Stripes Film, "which he is busy mixing now. There's no further details but Jack did let slip that he is mixing more than 40 tracks for the film."
Altsounds.com also reports the same information as well as a 2009 release date for the film, a rehash that White is producing "four or five records right now," including artists Rachelle Garniez and someone or some band known only as Mildred.
They also mention a June to August summer tour for Dead Weather as well as a June release date, and a project about which they quote White as stating "We've got this whole series coming out where people are just taking a photo at the Third Man building with a blue background, and you just hear the music and look at their photographs. I've been producing and playing drums on all these records as well." Not quite sure exactly what that means, but it sounds vaguely interesting non-the-less.
In addition to the reported Record Store Day release of the 7" for Dead Weather's "Hang You From The Heavens", CraveOnline.com repors Jack White lent support to the festivites by stating "“I think it’s high time the mentors, big brothers, big sisters, parents, Guardians, and neighborhood ne’er do wells, start taking younger people that look up to them to a real record store and show them what an important part of life music really is. I trust no one who hasn’t time for music. What a shame to leave a child, or worse, a generation orphaned from one of life’s great beauties. And to the record stores, artists, labels, DJs, and journalists; we’re all in this together. Show respect for the tangible music that you’ve dedicated your careers and lives to, and help It from becoming nothing more than disposable digital data.”
