"Dear friends and fans of the Dead Trees,
After a nice leisurely summer spent in New York City, Portland Oregon, Martha’s Vineyard, Los Angeles, Brazil, and everywhere in between, The Dead Trees are back together scheming and plotting. This September-October we will be co-headlining a tour with our great pals The Rosewood Thieves. Only to wrap up in time to go into the studio and record the follow up to our 2008 smash hit LP “King of Rosa.” As the specifics are still being worked out I can’t tell you too much about the record. But if all goes as planned it’s sure going to be radical, and probably go to #1. I have included a bunch of pictures our recent trip to Brazil on the “Little Joy Family Van Tour” featuring Adam Green, The Dead Trees, and Little Joy. Yeah, it was great, and now we’re pals with Caetano. Tell your friends, tell your mom. "

Much Love, Michael Ian Cummings
a band among my top 10 favorite albums last year - who are the Dead Trees?
Who are the Dead Trees?

Modest beginnings play out in the The Dead Trees' music in the best way - there's no artifice here, not much "production" to speak of, just a bunch of good musicians doing what comes naturally on a batch of deceptively elegant songs. Two guitars, background vocals here and there, a manic drum fill when necessary. It all feels easy and right. Says Michael: "We don't deprive any of our songs. They're like our children, all different and each as important as the next. We're just borrowing from our heroes and trying to raise a family."

Since those basement sessions things have happened pretty fast - the band sent some CDs around, and next thing you know The Dead Trees were supporting Albert Hammond, Jr. on a national tour, did The House Of Blues in LA, Webster Hall in NYC, just about burned down the Metro in Chicago, and abandoned a broken down van somewhere in Iowa. There were showcases at Spaceland and Mercury Lounge and interest at labels was piqued. Now being represented by the management duo of Bryna Gootkind (Port O'Brien, Kaki King, Melissa Ferrick) and Ryan Gentles (The Strokes, Albert Hammond, Jr.), they‘ve relocated to Portland, Oregon where they completed their debut LP, King Of Rosa. After signing a Japan-only deal with Japan's leading indie label Five Man Army, the band was invited to perform at the Summer Sonic Festival in Tokyo and Osaka in the summer of 2008 in support of the upcoming release.

Blog Alert

I just discovered this blog and it puts me with my music blathering to shame. I should really bring my personality to this blog - if, in fact, I have one. Anyway:http://spinthewheelreviews.blogspot.com/
Read it.
Love it.
Seduce it with a bottle of Martini and Rossi Asti Spumanti and a 45 of "Sometimes When We Touch" by Dan Hill.

The Wizard Of Oz Makes It's Digital Download Debut

The Wizard of Oz turns 70 this year and Rhino debuts a digital deluxe version of the soundtrack with over an hour of rare recordings. This version will be issued the same day that Warner Home Video issues the 70th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’s Edition on Blu-Ray. Rhino is also offering a number of Wizard of Oz ringtones, including “Over The Rainbow,” “We’re Off To See The Wizard” and “The Merry Old Land Of Oz.” Each is available for a suggested list price of $2.99.

This deluxe digital edition offers more than an hour of music not featured in the film. Included are rare outtakes and extended versions of “If I Only Had A Brain” and “If I Only Had A Heart”; alternate takes of “Over The Rainbow” and “Ding-Dong The Witch Is Dead”; demos performed by Arlen and Harburg; and an unused version of “If I Only Had A Heart” featuring Buddy Ebsen, who was originally cast as the Tin Man.

Also included are all of the songs originally cut after the film's preview in 1939. To reduce the film’s two-hour running time, director Victor Fleming and producer Mervyn LeRoy removed several songs, including “Jitterbug” and reprises of “Over the Rainbow” and “Ding-Dong The Witch Is Dead.”

New Tegan and Sara Sainthood and book release

Tegan and Sara will release their sixth album, Sainthood, October 27th. The album was prodiced by Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie), and Howard Redekopp, and mixed by Dave Sardy (Oasis, Primal Scream, Marilyn Manson).

According to Tegan and Sara, the songs were inspired by " emotional longing and the quiet actionswe hope may be noticed by the objects of our affection. SAINTHOOD is about obsession with romantic ideals. In the service of relationships we practice being perfect. We practice our sainthood in the hope that we will be rewarded with adoration. As we are driven to become anything for someone else, we sometimes become martyrs for our cause."

The album's title was inspired by / borrowed from Leonard Cohen (‘Came So Far For Beauty’:‘I practiced all my sainthood / I gave to one and all / But the rumors of my virtue / They moved her not at all.’”

Tegan and Sara have also recently completed their first ever set of books, titled ON, IN, AT. The three-book set chronicles
different time periods in writing and photographs from the past year of Tegan and Sara's lives: their 2008 US national tour,
their 2009 Australian tour, and a joint writing session in New Orleans for the new album.

Attn: Fans of Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains / YACHT Cover single and Tour

June 16, YACHT, (Young Americans Challenging High Technology), issued a limited run of 1000 7" singles titled We don't Put Out, which I blogged previously. The record features unauthorized covers of two songs from the classic punk rock / new wave / riot grrl film Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains, which were performed in the film by The Stains. The electronic versions of the tracks on the limited 7" are "Waste Of Time" and "Professionals." Jona of YACHT has also informed me that a remix and dub version of Waste of Time appear on their new "Psychic City" single digitally available via iTunes.

I called various record shops over the past few months and none had any idea what I was prattling on about, but it is still available via the band's label click here and at 5 bucks it's a steal.

Back Story:
"Don't Put Out" is a quote from Diane Lane's character, leader of the Stains, Corinne "Third Degree" Burns. The film features a very young Diane Lane, and Laura Dern. Paul Simonon (The Clash), Steve Jones and Paul Cook (of The Sex Pistols), and Fee Waybill (The Tubes), also appear in the movie. According to Yacht, the message inspired by the film, and conveyed on the single, is "Don't be an old man in a young girls' world." The songs "Waste Of Time" and "Professionals" were originally performed by all female faux band The Stains, from the 1981 Lou Adler film.

This movie is one of my all time favorites, and I suggest you rent or buy it. It only aired a few times on late night "alternative' format video / art/ film shows, such as USA Nightflight. That's where I saw it, and VH1 played it once, proving their lameness, and never aired it again. The film was sparsely scattered via various means in bootleg form, but finally, after years of fan petitions it was issued on DVD.

Pavement Reunion / Tour News and Press Release

Unedited press release:

After years of speculation, the most important American band of the Nineties is returning to the stage with the lineup of Mark Ibold, Scott "Spiral Stairs" Kannberg, Stephen Malkmus, Bob Nastanovich and Steve West reuniting for dates around the world in 2010. Please be advised this tour is not a prelude to additional jaunts and/or a permanent reunion.

Described in their own Wikipedia entry as having experienced "moderate commercial success," Pavement's catalog for the Matador, Domino, Drag City and Treble Kicker imprints has come to define in the eyes of many the blueprint for independent rock over the past generation. An evidentiary compilation release is planned to coincide with the touring sometime in 2010.

The first show announced is a New York performance on September 21, 2010 at Rumsey Playfield in Central Park. A pre-sale begins at 10:00 AM EDT on Friday, September 18, 2009 (tomorrow). The password for the pre-sale is ZOWEE and the ticketing link is http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/00004330A3C355DD. The general on-sale is slated for 10:00 AM EDT on Friday, September 25, 2009. Please note that tickets will be available without surcharges from the Nokia Theatre box office in Times Square and from Earwax at 218 Bedford Avenue in Williamsburg.

Please visit http://www.crookedrain.com for details on this on-sale as well as all Pavement news as it develops.

We're All Devo

Devo has teamed up with Warner Brothers to re-issue the band's catalogue. Additionally, the original line-up is hitting the road to perform two classic albums in their entirety. The band will play select cities, back to back, performing Are We Not Men? the first night, and Freedom of Choice the second night. If you've never seen Devo live - I highly recommend it.

Free Smashing Pumpkins Album Download Will Be Offered

Billy Corgan began recording new music this week under the Smashing Pumpkins moniker. The record, which will be offered for free, was inspired by (the tarot card) "The Fool's Journey." The working title is Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, and has an alleged 44 tracks which will be released for free download individually. In commenting about the direction of the record, Corgan alluded that the sound would be like that of his prior release Gish.

Regarding the project, Billy Corgan commented, ""Free will mean free, which means you won't have to sign up for anything, give an email address, or jump through a hoop. You will be able to go and take the song or songs as you wish, as many times as you wish."

11 four-song EPs and a box set will also be available.

Medeski Martin and Wood Box Set PRess Release

I've asked for a track listing, but until then, here is the oprss release unedited:
MEDESKI MARTIN & WOOD RELEASE BOX SET ON INDIRECTO RECORDS NOVEMBER 24th

Radiolarians: The Evolutionary Set to Include Radiolarians I, II, III, Unreleased Live Material, Bonus Tracks, Vinyl, Remixes and Feature Length DVD
(New York, NY) Medeski Martin & Wood culminate their 2-year Radiolarian Series with a comprehensive box set of material entitled Radiolarians: The Evolutionary Set, which Indirecto Records will release on November 24th. The box set will include: Radiolarians I, II and III complete with bonus tracks, a 10 track disc of remixed music, a previously unreleased 70 minute live album, a double vinyl LP set consisting of highlights from the three Radiolarians albums, plus a DVD feature film entitled Fly In A Bottle directed by Billy Martin. All of the material contained in the box was written and performed by MMW specifically for The Radiolarian Series.

The Radiolarian Series, named after a type of single-celled organism with a dazzlingly intricate exoskeleton, was designed to subvert the age-old music industry cycle of write>record>tour. The trio, consisting of keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood, convened for brief writing retreats, performed only that new material on tour and recorded the material immediately after getting off the road. The band repeated this processes three times while touring in different regions of the US and South America. MMW and Indirecto Records released this music on three records that came out over the course of the past year.

"As a child, I was always interested in oceanography and marine biology. I was especially interested in plankton, phytoplankton, diatoms, all of those microorganisms in the sea. John and Chris share my passion and interest in biology and science as well" drummer Billy Martin states. It's not surprising then that the trio instantly gravitated towards the dazzling drawings and in-depth studies of German biologist Ernst Haeckel. Haeckel's beautiful Radiolarians drawings graced the covers of all three Radiolarians records and served as a visual inspiration for the trio's music. Ernst Haeckel is credited with discovering and naming thousands of new species and popularizing the studies of Charles Darwin in Germany during the late 1800s.

Radiolarians: The Evolutionary Set compiles Radiolarians I, II and III in the same package for the first time, and offers the addition of three previously unreleased bonus tracks "Incantation," "Satan Part II" and "Clifton." The Radiolarians records were met with widespread praise upon their release, as the trio pushed their music in new directions. Be it the more experimental sounds of "Chasen vs Suribachi", the pop-rock swagger of "Undone", the funk-lilt of "Free Go Lily" or the classical meditation of "Kota", MMW challenged themselves with ever changing forms of playing and writing. What resulted was some of the best and most advanced music of MMW's prolific history.

Medeski Martin & Wood have hand selected tracks from the three Radiolarians albums to include on a special edition, high quality audio, double vinyl pressing. The first record in this 10-track collection of highlights, will center around MMW's more riff-focused compositions such as "Amber Gris" and "Undone," while the second record will feature funkier tracks such as "Walk Back" and more ambient mood pieces such as "Hidden Moon." The band sought to give their fans a chance to experience the music in a superior audio format while offering the visceral physical connection that can only come through vinyl.

Complementing the vinyl will be an eight track, 70-minute live record culled from shows recorded during the Radiolarians tours, and a ten track remix CD featuring contributions from 9 different DJs and producers. Mixes from Dan The Automator, DJ Spooky, DJ Logic, DJ Olive and Scott Harding, amongst other amazing DJs, demonstrate the versatility of MMW's music as the songs range from different forms of groove and funk to accessible and edgy dance-pop songs. The live record further builds upon this versatility, as the listener is given a chance to hear the studio music fleshed out in fully formed and extended improvisations. As it was, this music was written and perfected on the road, so to hear it played live represents an essential aspect of the entire Radiolarians concept.

As an amazing finale to the entire box set, Billy Martin directed the first feature film in Medeski Martin & Wood's history entitled Fly in a Bottle. Tirelessly working through footage of MMW in the studio and on the road, the film provides an extremely intimate portrait of the band. It highlights the trio's intricate relationships with each other and with the music they have worked to create over their past 19 years as a band. In conjunction with Fly in a Bottle, the DVD will also include the music video for "Amber Gris", the esoteric Incant to Chantes Des Femmes directed by Grey Gersten, and an experiment with time-lapse film entitled CW. CW (directed again by Martin), is a metaphoric look at the evolving and intricate relationship between Chris Wood and John Medeski from Billy Martin's perspective. Filmed on the tour bus, CW is set to the music of "First Light" and features excerpts of transistor radio as used in "Chasen v. Suribachi." The DVD portion of the set provides a fitting closure as fans and critics are given unprecedented access to the band during their everyday lives. It's raw, highly personal and real.

The Depreciation Guild Announce US Tour With School Of Seven Bells

Fans of "shoegaze" or "dream pop" might want to make note of Brooklyn's three piece wonder, The Depreciation Guild. The band consists of twin brothers Christoph Hochheim (guitar, vocals) and Anton Hochheim (live drums).

The band self released their debut, In Her Gentle Jaws, as a free download in December of 2007. And last year, The Depreciation Guild played Geekfest in Mexico, played American Eagle’s New American Music Union festival, and shared a stage with both Bob Dylan and The Raconteurs. This year found the band releasing (and selling out of) a white vinyl single for their song “Dream About Me." And they are re-releasing In Her Gentle Jaws on clear vinyl September 29th, while it is now available digitally.

"Like Animal Collective, Sin Fang Bous layers and loops together unusual sound effects, samples, and vocals to create a sound that could easily melt into every nook in the most cavernous of spaces. In addition to the densely packed layers of melodies and effects, stark moments of stripped down sound creep into 'Clangour,' making it more curious and inviting. If chaos could be taken apart, examined piece by piece, and put carefully back together in a more pleasing way, this is what it would sound like." - NPR

Holmes (a.k.a. Roy Shakked) may not be a household name, but you've probably heard some of his music on CSI Miami, Sex and The City, The OC, Nip/Tuck, or The Devil Wears Prada. He's making money the new fashioned way - licensing songs.
The new album Holmes, by Holmes, was released yesterday,(September 14).

Here's an MP3 of “Let’s Dance” (David Bowie) , covered by Holmes in his own unique, non '80s sax infused way: click here And below is a video for the break-up song "Not With You."

No further information can be leaked until a future date, (not yet known), or a blogger might get cut. In the meantime, here is a demo for one of the new songs "Rayna" click here

Girls On Tour (As Opposed to On Film)

The new Girls album, Album, will be released September 22. I'm listening to it, and it's really good. I wasn't so impressed with last year's darlings The Fleet Foxes, but this is right up my alley. The two are comparable only because the albums are not traditional "ROCK."

The San Francisco duo Girls make music that is a bit of Teenage Fanclub mixed with specks of My Bloody Valentine, and maybe some Jonathan Richman honesty thrown in for good measure. It's pop infused melancholy - or vice versa. Here is the single "Lust For Life" click here

Bebel Gilberto / Advance MP3

Okay, call me wacky, (and if you know me, you likely have), but I prefer the Carmen Miranda version. None the less here is an mp3 for the first single from Bebel Gilberto, "Chica Chica Boom Chic" click here
